It must be difficult being a supporter of the Boston Pittsburgh Red Sox and we certainly understand your post-World Series outcry over the Yankees payroll. May God bless you in your fight against teams that have their own regional cable sports networks, charge the highest ticket prices, spend over slot in the amateur draft, trade mistakes away by picking up huge chunks of player contracts, and spend tens of millions just to talk to overseas pitchers. You are a beacon of hope for small-market teams everywhere.
Is there anyone in that fanbase who is a capable of an independent thought?

“diseased fan base” that was awesome hahaha.
Milo November 5, 2009 23:30
I live in Massachusetts, and it’s been awful today. It’s as if every Red Sox fan in the world got together last night to figure what their excuse for our title would be.
Shaun November 5, 2009 23:43
Oh, say it ain’t so! Red Sox fans need to make excuses as to why the Yankees won their 27th and they didn’t make it past the first round? The Yankees have had the highest consecutive payroll for 9 years. In those 9 years, this was the first championship they won, all that money to go 1 for 9 doesn’t seem like a return any business man would hope for. It’s pretty clear it’s not how much a team makes, but how much chemistry and heart they have, I think that’s what the Yankees had this year that they were lacking every other year.
In short, I hope the Yankees win #28 next year, if only so I can hear more deadsox nation whining.
Think November 5, 2009 23:54
Shaun, it had nothing to do with chemistry or heart. Shut up forever, and please throw your computer away.
Alvaro Fernandez Ravelo November 6, 2009 00:50
What is wrong with money well spent? Don’t like the system? Then go to live to Cuba!
john November 6, 2009 01:36
Shaun, i think a businessman would be very pleased with how the yankees have been doing. Sure spending all that money to get a team that wins 1 world series out of 9 years may seem bad, but in reality they made 2 world series appearances, 3 ALCS appearances and the playoffs 8 out of the last 9 years. Thats pretty good. throw in the fact that in terms of profit the yankees have been making absolute bank, and i think any business man would kill to have been the brains behind the operation.
Seamus November 6, 2009 02:13
This is America. Make more money.
This posting applies to the Mets too. I understand that it’s hard to watch other people succeed while you trip over your own feet, but seriously, shut up.
Joe D. November 6, 2009 02:17
The Red Sox have traded two used ball bags to the Florida Marlins for Jeremy Hermida.
I don’t know how Red Sox fans can live with themselves given blatant attempts like this one to buy a championship. After all, if Hermida’s salary wasn’t due to escalate, surely the poor Marlins would keep him and see if he can fulfill that upside potential.
The way Boston is taking advantage of the weaker small-market teams makes me sick.
Stewie772 November 6, 2009 07:13
As a Sox fan I don’t think we have a right to complain about another team’s payroll. Yeah, maybe you have a few mercenaries on that team (Burnett is highly overpaid, though he did perform in the playoffs for the most part), but they’re damn good ball-players. Let’s face it, the Yankees were great this year. They kept it together all year long (albeit a little slow at the beginning) and performed when it counted the most. I don’t necessarily route for you either, but when a team wins it all, you have to tip your cap.
Anyway, hey, I’ve been following nomaas for some time now. While I don’t always agree with your opinions, your Sabermetric analysis is pretty solid, and I appreciate a group of people who can understand those things. I also like that you dish it out to your own team when they don’t perform and not just take cheap shots at the sox (which are usually pretty funny). Don’t change a thing nomaas!

Pittsburgh? I don’t get it.
Karl November 6, 2009 09:17
Joe Posnanski has a whole article today whining about the Yankees payroll, that they’re bad for baseball, etc. Where have these arguments been the last 9 years?
PhilM November 6, 2009 10:04
I’m a fan of Joe Pos, but I think he missed the boat on this one and passed up an opportunity to educate the anti-Yankee blowhards who’ve come out of the woodwork. Here’s what I posted on his blog:
“I ran some quick-and-dirty calculations using USAToday’s MLB salary database. Even looking at only 1996-2009, when the Evil Empire’s Dark Age of the Sith apparently began and Yankees had the #1 payroll all but one season, standardized payroll correlates to team quality (using either wins or normalized run differential) with a coefficient of less than 0.50. In other words, LESS THAN HALF of the rationale for team quality is tied to payroll — and that’s with Yankee teams having some payrolls more than three standard deviations above average. So let’s look at the numbers and not play the “this just sounds right” game, shall we?”
Patrick November 6, 2009 10:39
Good ole, Pete Abe.
“It’s not exactly a feel-good story anyway. The Yankees have an obscene payroll and built a stadium that caters mainly to the wealthy. A team that spent nearly half a billion in free agents last winter is not exactly the little train that could.” – Peter Abraham, Globe Staff November 5, 2009
(http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2009/11/all_you_can_do.html)
Now that I think of it, he kind of looks like the Kool-Aid Man. Wonder if we can get him to say, “Ohhh yeah!”
Ron November 6, 2009 10:47
as he would say “ha”. their payroll in 04 was oh sooo low, and then the 07 little train began with a ticket cost of $51.1 mill that was paid in Yen.
TeamoftheDecade November 6, 2009 11:16
Gentlemen, gentlemen – nice to see that on your day of celebration, you’re still obsessed with the Red Sox. Everyone take a deep breath and enjoy the parade today.
I hold no qualms about saying the Yankees were the best team in baseball this year. It became evident through the course of the season that the Yanks just wanted it more and truly defined what it takes as a team to win. That said, let’s not pretend that the Sox are in the same stratosphere as the Yanks when it comes to spending. Over $100 mil in payroll annually. Over $400 million committed to free agents in the offseason – you’re not seeing that anywhere else besides the Bronx.
I’m not using that as an excuse because to me, the best team won the Series. But to dismiss this argument by others is fairly ludicrous.
Roger B. Calistro November 6, 2009 11:28
As I understand it, Tex signed with the Yankees after the ownership of the Red Sox went to his home and apparently turned him off in the process of wooing him. All this whining about money from Sox fans is consistent with a losers’ mentality that blames the spending of others for tactical and financial miscalculations of their own doing. It wasn’t lack of money that resulted in decisions to roll the dice with Varitek behind the plate, Smoltz and Penny on the mound, and the Unknown Shortstop in the middle of the Infield. It was money that got the Red Sox Victor Martinez, Dice K, and the retention of their core. The Yankees drink champagne; the Red Sox quaff not Kool Aid but a bitter brew of sour grapes and self pity.
Roger B. Calistro November 6, 2009 12:34
In the same vein, clearly, there’s a right way to use steroids, and a wrong way. The right way is A-Rod; the wrong way is David Ortiz.
Philip November 6, 2009 12:54
Hmmmm…. lets see the Red Sox blew the Tex negotiations (mistake 1). Thought that Brad Penny, John Smoltz and Daisuke would be solid starters for the year (mistake 2) Trading for Martinez instead of Cliff Lee (mistake 3) Thinking that Ortiz off steroids was nearly as good as Ortiz with steroids (mistake 4) letting John Henry’s love letters to his own personal Anna Nichole gold digger be published (mistake 5)
Kevin S. November 6, 2009 13:04
The Twins just got a pretty good starting shortstop for a fourth outfielder. Wierd, seems like Theo should have been all over that.
And if we’re piling on with the Pete Abe hate, he blatantly plagiarized Chad Jennings the other day and still refuses to admit it.
Karl November 6, 2009 13:33
He’s taken so much from nomaas over the years too.
Stephen November 6, 2009 14:07
Now this is a fun take on what would happen if you put a “hard cap” on salaries:

Ha. Team gets swept in the first round this year so they’re clinging to this “Team of the decade” fantasy, even though they have less division titles or overall victories.
Keep dreaming, and keep coming to Yankee blogs since every Sox site is run by idiots. I’m sure the admins here appreciate the traffic.
jason November 6, 2009 19:26
sox fans have taught me that a high payroll does not guarantee a championship, but when the Yankees win, it’s because of high payroll.
TeamoftheDecade November 6, 2009 20:47
Philip seems like a smart guy. One could say they blew the Tex negotiations – another could say they were like the 29 other teams that couldn’t give him $180 mil. I guess the Angels “blew it” too. Smoltz and Penny… yeah too bad they couldn’t throw $300 mil at a couple of starters. They tried to go it in a cheaper way and it didn’t work out – starting pitching was not the reason this team lost though. This team lost because they had too many lapses at the plate – hence the good trade for Victor. They needed hitting at the deadline. Trading for Lee… seriously, that’s a good one. No one was calling for them to get another pitcher.
Seriously, if Bubbles the Chimp could sign his name, he’d be as good a GM as Cashman. All it takes is someone who can sign a nice legible name on those checks. But don’t forget the Swisher trade! That’s right, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Can Lester pass his cancer to everyone in Boston please? The country would be better without Red Sux Nation.

Another classy Yankee fan. World’s Worst Fanbase.
201028 November 7, 2009 23:40
Boston fans will never, ever get over their obsession with the Yankees…they will always come up with some sort of excuse why they didn’t get into the playoffs or why the Yankees won a WS…more importantly, nobody that is any good wants to play for Boston….ARod and Teixeira never wanted to play in Boston…the money may be there but the fact is, the Yankees win more titles than any other…they bring in more revenue than any other…their fanbase is larger than any other, therefore, more revenue….2 World Series in one decade….another new decade starting in 2010….Yanks will be there…you can bank on it!!
Mariano Rivera is Great November 8, 2009 05:42
“No one was calling for them to get another pitcher.”
Not sure what those Halladay rumors were all about then. Anyway, the Sox were a good team. Came up short. I have no idea how they’d be considered the team of the decade considering the numbers for the Yanks and the Sox. It’s not particularly an arguable discussion. The Sox had their best decade ever and it wasn’t as good as the Yanks’ decade. No reason to overcompensate in the handle you choose. You should follow my lead using facts, with something like “Jon Papelbon flares his nostrils and the Sox fanbase is quickly turning on him” or “Boston management orchestrates media hatchet jobs for players on the way out of town” or “2009 was a tough season for Sox fans”.
“Can Lester pass his cancer to everyone in Boston please? The country would be better without Red Sux Nation.”
not cool
Jeff November 8, 2009 19:30
It truly shows how obsessed Yankee fans are with Red Sox fans. On a day you should be celebrating your WS you’re wondering what Red Sox fans are thinking? As a Red Sox fan I could care less that the Yankees won nor did I care what you thought in 2004 or 2007. Oh by the way….”Dead Sox Fans”? Is that all you can come up with?
Jeff November 8, 2009 19:32
To Mariano Rivera is Great…you truly are classless. Spread cancer? What a piece of garbage you are.
