We very much look forward to Nick clogging up the basepaths. Welcome back to the Boogie Down, you pitch count increasing machine.
Side note: So you see, a “rotating DH” does not imply a game of musical chairs. It means having a primary DH, and then using 30-40 games to rest your position players.

Maybe put the book down geek. if you think Johnson’s OB % out weighs Matsui’s run production your lost.
greg 23 December 18, 2009 12:05
Word up vomit, these are the same assholes who shit all over Johnny Damon’s first contract with he Yank’s, poindexters.
Philip December 18, 2009 12:20
Well it comes down to the SABR metric geeks saying that run production and post season production is over rated and pitch count and walks are the be all end all. That is great for a lead-off hitter or someone who can run faster than Bea Arthur.
I know Matsui is also slow but he seems to drive in runs which a DH generally should do.
Brendan December 18, 2009 12:22
Matt who? Holli-what?
Cory December 18, 2009 12:36
It’s grateful, not greatful.
Cory December 18, 2009 12:38
I think Philip is secretly Jeff Francoeur.

I am totally against signing anyone whose name is a synonym for abuse to the male genitalia.
Doug Soetart December 18, 2009 12:49
Cashman dumps the World Series MVP because he needs DH flexibility, then signs a player that will be a “DH” only – and it’s all good. Amazing.
As for the stats arguments – Johnson’s been a more productive hitter than Matsui over the past 7 years?!? Okie doke.
I love how some people come on this site and say “clutch” doesn’t matter. I guess all those pre-2009 A-Rod articles, and all the fan abuse he took are also meaningless. And all those comments about getting the “monkey off his back” were about zoo animals. It’s just plain silly to deny that the ability of a player to raise his game under intense pressure is a significant asset – in any sport.
UNLESS down 1, 1 second to go, you’d choose anyone other than Michael Jordan to take the last shot…
Or down 4 with 2 minutes to go in a Super Bowl, you want Jeff George running your offense.
Or you think that Eddie Lee Whitson in pinstripes equals Eddie Lee Whitson in Padres gold and black.
So – stats aside, Matsui’s been undeniably one of the best “clutch” hitters we’ve seen over his 7 years – from his 1st game in pinstripes to his last.
Do we really just “root for laundry” as Michael Kay says? Does the fact that Damon and Matsui just had a large part of bringing a World Championship to New York mean nothing on December 1?
Now, nobody’s saying keep Matsui over Matt Holliday – but Nick Johnson? Please…

that brought a tear to my eye.

Regarding the gentleman who posited that losing Hideki-san would not impact team chemistry because he does not speak english… i would suggest that that motherfucker does, in fact, speak english.
Tonto December 18, 2009 13:07
The Yankees have made some undeniably dumb decisions over the past few years, but signing Nick Johnson while letting Hideki Matsui go isn’t one of them. Johnson plays an above average 1st base, can spell Tex at times without an enormous offensive or defensive dropoff, and is an OBP machine, while Matsui’s knees are dust, can’t play the field even close to competently, and will be 36 years old in ’10.
This isn’t to say Matsui won’t be missed- but the fact that he played the entire season last year without a major injury is pure luck. Johnson might run the bases like an oversized herbivore, but Matsui could barely get to 1st base without a walker.
Is it an upgrade? We’ll have to wait and see.
pat December 18, 2009 13:57
OMG TEH CLUTCHHHHHHH
late and close
2009 Nick Johnson hit .293/.465/.480/.945
2 outs RISP
2009 Nick Johnson hit 362/.545/.532/1.077
But he did it in DC so it doesn’t counttt!!!!!
Jason December 18, 2009 14:31
I was more of a Matsui fan than anyone, but this is a good move.
wexy December 18, 2009 15:35
If someone coughs on Nick Johnson, he will be out for the season.
Brendan December 18, 2009 15:38
I’m excited to hear what tune is being whistled at nomaas when Nick the Stick trips, falls face-first into a fire extinguisher and loses an eye.
greg 23 December 18, 2009 15:44
Invent a stat to show how 26 home runs and 90 RBI’s is worse than 8 home runs and 62 RBI’s.
Frank December 18, 2009 16:20
^^^^What he said
Kevin December 18, 2009 16:26
Johnson is not replacing Matsui, who stated he was? The team will be different next year, not worse because we dont have matsui. Johnson is not expected to hit in 5 hole, so his stats dont have to be compared to matsui.
Granderson at 5 may be ok, but well see how he turns out. Im not too thrilled about no one protecting arod, they need someone behind him.
27 Rings December 18, 2009 16:31
Matsui will be Missed !!!!
pat December 18, 2009 16:43
RUNS BATTED IN; A GREAT WAY TO COMPARE PLAYERS SINCE-
Never
Brian December 18, 2009 16:45
love the signing
his job will be to get on base in the 2 hole, not to drive in runs like Matsui in the 5
Grandy, Posada, etc. will be the 5 hitter and i am sure will do a fine job driving in runs
Dick Ear December 18, 2009 16:50
An career-injury-prone player who does nothing besides walk and stare at pitches. Awesome. Just what the doctor ordered.
LOL@ Nomaas getting boners for every slouch who can work a walk and stare at pitches.
Brendan December 18, 2009 17:07
@pat
Because everyone knows the winner of a baseball game is determined by which team has seen more pitches after nine innings.
Grander than your Son December 18, 2009 17:50
Working the count is an incredibly important part of the game. Especially for the 2 hitter, if he can make the starting pitcher throw a lot of pitches in the first inning, or even work a walk and create the potential for runs in the first inning. Bobby Abreau was great at it for us and Johnson has a chance to do the same. Unlike Abreau in the 3 hole though, he’ll be in the 2 hole to get on first and wait for Tex and Arod’s big knocks.
Kevin S. December 18, 2009 17:52
RBI? Seriously, people? Matsui came to bat with 127 more runners on base last year than Nick Johnson did. When you look at how often they drove those runners in, Matsui only did so at a marginally higher rate. Of course, getting on base so other hitters can drive you in is pretty freaking important too, and in that category, Johnson obliterates Matsui.
eb December 18, 2009 21:02
Cashman was not going to say “Hideki has no knees”. He wanted to show respect to Matsui and allow him to get another job without making it seem like he’s toast. All the ‘DH flexibility’ and ‘DH is not a priority’ was just BS. Cash was doing Mastui a favor.
Its bizarre and somewhat disturbing that people here take everything Cash says in public as gospel. As if hes going to show his cards in public and say ‘Hideki is a physical wreck, stay away from this ticking time bomb’
anon December 18, 2009 23:04
These comments suck fucking dick. You should all be ashamed.
Noah December 18, 2009 23:20
Anyone who uses home runs and RBIs for why this is bad is a fool. Johnson did not hit in Yankee stadium. Johnson did not play in an offense that allowed him to knock in runs. Johnson is not even going to be in the slot to knock in runs. Seriously people, learn baseball. Not all line ups and parks are the same. Nick Johnson’s job is going to set up the big bats, not be a big bat.
Also, working the count is a GOOD THING. It has been a big part of Yankee baseball since 1998. Working the count knocks the pitcher out early and you feast on the bullpen. It has been that way for years. What do you think Giambi and Abreu did their entire tenure?
ChrisV82 December 18, 2009 23:35
Matsui has a great head of hair and Nick Johnson has that disgusting, balding widow’s peak thing going on. The Yankees really fucked up this time.
Mr. Faded Glory December 19, 2009 07:35
“UNLESS down 1, 1 second to go, you’d choose anyone other than Michael Jordan to take the last shot…”
Jordon was arguably the best basketball player ever. Of course nobody would have a problem with him taking the last shot.
What kind of silly “clutch matters” nonsense is this?
You know who I’d like in a one hole playoff in Golf? Tiger Woods.
You know who I’d like in a shootout in OT? Gretsky.
Saying a superstar who is amazing all the time is “clutch” does nothing to prove your argument.
Also Matsui’s knees are falling off.
Mr. Faded Glory December 19, 2009 07:37
Dick, OPS called it wanted to remind you that it is indeed a statistic.
Bob December 19, 2009 12:31
Are you sure that’s a picture of Nick Johnson? It looks like Peter Abraham.
Business Suit December 19, 2009 17:15
I like how patience = staring at pitches. Did you know that if all you do is stare at pitches, you’re gonna strike out and not walk? Working a walk is not the same as being lazy – it means not swinging at pitches you’re gonna pop up.
Jay December 20, 2009 15:34
lol that kinda looks like Pete Abe.
MyTriState Yankees December 21, 2009 12:39
how many times did Matsui have his knees drained as the Yankees DH last year? just asking. but i do think he was worth the 6 mil he signed with the angels for.
