Matt Holliday is still available.
Reportedly, the Cardinals and Orioles are the only teams actively competing for him.
As we outlined back in November, the man is a star and is in the prime of his career.
Obviously, we have no idea what the Yankees budget is, but if Holliday can be obtained, you can put the nail in the coffin for the rest of baseball. Enemies deserve no mercy.

That’s what I’m talking about.

I’m with you all the way. I would take Holliday over a pitcher because I have confidence in the starting rotation. Give the young guys a start every five days and by the end of the season this rotation should be stronger than ever. And (drool) the lineup would send opposing pitchers to early showers.

Isn’t Carl Crawford a better fit next year?
domezilla December 20, 2009 23:49
while Carl Crawford is available, I might be wrong but I believe he’s actually older and not as good a player in terms of .obp, .ba, and just all around minus the speed as holliday… agree with nomaas on this one gotta do it
Rob A from BBD December 21, 2009 04:40
I doubt they’re going to get this done. But I wouldn’t be upset if I was wrong. We’ll see, hopefully if it happens, it happens by Christmas.
27 Rings December 21, 2009 06:57
Lets still try to sign Damon for a cheaper Deal ! Lets focus on pitching !!!!!!
Crawford makes a better fit for The Yankees. He will bring speed and better feilding presence than Holliday would any day of the week !!!
Sheets & Chapman !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Butcher December 21, 2009 07:59
I’d rather see Crawford and/or Mauer next year.
Greg December 21, 2009 10:44
Hmm, a tough one. We have definitely taken a step back offensively, IMO, so Holliday makes some sense. But I still don’t trust Hughes or Joba as starters. the priority should still be starting pitching, i.e. Sheets, Deusch, Chapman etc.. I would be happier to have Hughes, Joba and Aceves fighting for one starting slot. The loses go the pen.
stevie b December 21, 2009 11:03
it’s not a definite by any means that the team has taken a step back offensively. You’re assuming no decline in Matsui or Damon? At their ages? Nick could easily outperform Matsui, and Granderson could outperform Damon. Worst case scenario is that offensively the team is no worse than last year with an improvement in outfield defense.
Butcher December 21, 2009 11:04
I agree with Greg. Some kind of move has to be made for another starter. I don’t feel confident with either Joba or Hughes…I have more confidence in Joba, but he should be a 5th starter on this team. I don’t think Hughes will ever be a starter. Just my opinion…hopefully I am wrong. I think it’s worth taking a shot on Sheets.
stevie b December 21, 2009 11:15
Hughes never be a starter? That’s a bold proclamation.
MyTriState Yankees December 21, 2009 12:28
tough decisions all around. Holliday performed much better in the NL than he did in the AL, although to be fair to Holliday, he was on the As. Hughes had a great moment as a starter in Texas, but that was a few years ago. Joba was great as a starter after the all star break, but once they started messing with his flow, he never seemed to get back where he was. I believe you can never have enough pitching, but i dont think the Yankees necessarily have to choose between another bat and another starter. clearly they can have both, they just might not want to spend the money on both. Unless you’re in love with HOlliday (who is going to require a ton of cash and year), I would say the best bet is to reach a compromise with Damon and worry about LF some other time – or settle for a league average performance from Melky. Melky was clutch last year and Cerveli was also pretty good in the clutch – but this was a small sample size…
Philip December 21, 2009 13:15
I agree that we should stock up on starters if A.J. has back to back injury free years that will be amazing in itself. I say we go after Sheets, and Deurscher who we can be got on the cheap, test the waters on Chapman and let them fight it out for starting spots with Joba, Hughes and Aceves.
Frank Ueno December 21, 2009 15:28
Sick picture.
A-Bomb December 21, 2009 17:30
Honestly, I love when teams bitch about our payroll. It makes me happy that we are the only team to care enough to spend $200 million +.
Bronx Blogger December 21, 2009 19:34
IMO, Hughes and Joba need to start the year in the rotation.
If the organization really plans on them to be starters down the road, which they have said time and time again, then the priority with them is to have them both starting.
If they get shelled they get shelled, we have both the lineup and defense around them to deal with losing runs early.
But they need to start and be given an honest chance in the rotation as starters before they are labeled as anything else.
Bronx Blogger December 21, 2009 19:35
Oh. And sign Holliday now, he’s better than Crawford anyway.
Last Night I Dreamed I Was Playing Centerfield in Yankee Stadium in My Underwear December 21, 2009 20:14
I get confused on Holliday vs. Halladay right around the holidays.
CT Yank December 21, 2009 22:20
he hit 11 homers in 340 at bats in the AL…
.243 career BA in the postseason…
not worthy of a 100+mil, plus 1st rd pick
Voomo Zanzibar December 22, 2009 01:49
Come on! Enough! We just waited 8 years to get back on top. Don’t you Holliday-Humpers remember what happened last time we got greedy and entitled? Overpriced mercenary free agents and Scott Proctor. Holliday has been .351 .420 .632 1.052 at home
.284 .353 .454 .808 on the road
Ever heard of Coors Field?
And being traded to a contender in the last half of a free agent year?
Just chill, everybody.
F the sox December 22, 2009 09:02
Chapman is a low level gamble..for $15 million he is well worth the chance. they don’t have to buy him out like some japanese players. This guy is a fraction of what donated to Kei Igawa. you never have enough pitching and they have to start getting younger starting pitching.
i think deusch is intriguing. solid #s but pitched in a pitchers park in a weak division. he can be had relatively cheap i imagine. sheets inflated price due to harden and the idiot rangers. i don’t think holliday will be the answer. very good player, right age etc. but more big contracts and they typically bite you in the ass.
I actually hope burnett gets hurt. i cannot stomach him throwing like half his pitches as balls.
Core of this team is solid, fill in some spots and will be fine.
Lastly, Theo will build a terrible team. look at his moves? scutaro? cameron? did he forget about penny, saito and smoltz? LOL..
Frank Ueno December 22, 2009 09:21
Voomo, ever hear of park-adjusted numbers?
Voomo Zanzibar December 22, 2009 13:48
hey, all this talk of pitchers and outfielders… anyone else concerned that we have a 36 yr old SS and a 34 yr old 3B who doesnt have The Hudson anymore?
What if something happens to one of them?
Ramiro Pena? Hairston? Derosa? Yeesh.
That’s where we need depth.
Whadda ya say we trade The Farm + Joba for HANLEY RAMIREZ – and put Hanley in LF (literally watching Derek and Alex’s backs)!
Butcher December 22, 2009 15:34
The 34 year old 3B you speak of just happens to be the greatest player of all time. Lets not end his career just yet, ok?
Bronx Blogger December 22, 2009 17:34
The resurgent 34 year old 3B who carried the team through the first two rounds of the playoffs.
Voomo Zanzibar December 23, 2009 00:08
yeah, of course.
I’m just saying: who plays if (when) either of them get hurt?
Angel Berroa: .136 .174 .182 .356
Cody Ransom: .190 .256 .329 .585
Ramiro Pena: .287 .317 .383 .699
Jerry Hairston:.237 .352 .382 .733
Those dudes got 324 plate appearances last year.
Kevin S. December 23, 2009 02:38
There’s really nothing wrong with a .700 OPS from your utility infielder… if the guy can handle shortstop and hits much better than that, he’s probably in line for a starting gig somewhere.
stevie b December 23, 2009 08:34
Agree with Kevin S. Bench players on are the bench for a reason.
Butcher December 23, 2009 11:25
agree with stevie b…if an injury happened…at that point you go out and get someone…not before it even happens…no team operates that way.
