How can they compete with such limited funds?

The Boston Red Sox have reached a preliminary agreement to trade third baseman Mike Lowell to the Texas Rangers for catcher Max Ramirez, sources told ESPN.
The Red Sox will pay $9 million of Lowell's $12 million salary. The trade was first reported by FoxSports.com.

When in doubt, just pay someone to take a player off your hands.

Does the $9 million count toward the sox payroll?
yes, it does count.

OMG but what are they gonna do with TEC omgomgomgomg he’s wicked awesome omgomg !!!11!!!oneone!!
Steve – didn’t realize Max Ramirez was that close to MLB ready. You think Tec will get released from his backup job/part time job if he performs poorly?
Don’t forget $9M on Lugo still…
They stepped in shit with this guy. He played well for a guy Epstein treated as a leper. If SD trades them Gonzalez I say its collusion with Theo’s butt buddy running SD. Plus rebuilding or not the guy makes no money and is young so Y trade him ?
29th poorest team in baseball.
Just another example of Theo’s brilliant mind at work. The Yale boy wonder.
He ate Renteria’s contract, Lugo’s contract, and now Lowell’s.
I am not sure why if I was a GM I would want to hold on to a player like David Ortiz over Mike Lowell. Lowell’s OBP, SLG, OPS, and OPS+ were all slightly better then Ortiz’s, granted they were in less at bats, but if you were to switch Mike Lowell to DH primarily he would stay healthy longer and still be able to play third in a pinch, where as Ortiz is completely useless in the field. Also, Lowell’s contract is for less money, he hasn’t been tied to roids and he is a give it all for the team type player.
This deal is amateur at best. Texas just got better and Boston will still give at bats to guys who flirt with the Mendoza line like Ortiz and Varitek.
I thought Lowell’s contract was for ~12M/year and Ortiz is ~6.5M. Lowell has an upside as trade bait, where Ortiz with 2009 is a bit of an albatross in terms of a trade. Until the MLB roids list is released, everyone is suspect so that’s a thin issue. The Sox already have subs for 1st and 3rd and Ortiz isn’t totally useless with the glove at first. In the meantime Rameriz can learn alot from Vtek … Finally Lowell was part of the deal for Beckett. 2007 proves that was well worth it. I’ll give you Lugo and Retawreck, but you have to give me Kevin Brown and Randy Johnson and Clemens part II …
According, to COTS Ortiz is slated to make $12.5 the next two years, although 2011 is a team option. I originally thought it was 2012 as the option but I read it wrong. So for arguments sake Ortiz’s contract is worth less guaranteed money.
Although, I fully disagree that Ortiz is a viable option for 1b. He’d make Giambi look good over time.
hi, may i find out when will u write much more article regarding this topic? I am looking forward to read your next post. thks~
This is certainly a great great resource that you are providing and also you give them away for nothing. I adore seeing web sites that understand on line casinos of providing good quality resource without cost. It will be old just what goes close to comes around routine. Did an individual acquired several links plus I see many trackbacks??
