In a bit of an early Christmas present, MLB sent us a free copy of the Yankees 2009 World Series Collector’s Edition DVD set. In exchange, we promised them we’d review it. However, Bud & Co. said we didn’t have to make it a fluff piece. Word.

The set includes 8 discs: Full broadcasts of WS Games 1-6, and Game 6 of the ALCS. It also includes a bonus disc that includes highlights from the regular season and ALCS.

First thing we noticed (and loved) about the game broadcasts is that you can turn off the audio of the FOX announcers, and listen to Sterling/Waldman. While Waldman’s voice sounds like fingernails scratching a chalkboard, we’ll gladly take that over Buck and McCarver. Actually, you can watch the games while listening to a Spanish-language broadcast too. On second thought, we’d rather do that.

The game footage is literally what FOX broadcast during the Series. It would have been very cool if they provided some behind-the-scenes looks into the clubhouses, but there is none. It’s basically everything we saw on TV. It’s nice to be able to watch all the games again, and skip ahead to any 1/2 inning you want, but that’s the extent of the individual game footage.

The best part about the collection is the Bonus DVD, that includes milestones, walkoffs, and big moments from the 2009 regular season and some of the games from the ALCS. These include Mo’s 500th save, Melky hitting for the cycle, Jeter’s hit record, and our favorite: Arod’s rainy game-tying, 11th-inning HR in Game 2 of the ALCS. Why is it our favorite? Because you can see NoMaas’ Sensei John Kreese in the crowd. Oh snap!

The packaging itself is rather interesting. On the cover of each disc, there are a bunch of facts and figures from the Series. For example, on the cover of the bonus disc, it states:

A trademark of the 2009 Yankees was the ability to increase the opponents’ pitch count. One example: In the six World Series games Johnny Damon fouled off 22 pitches.

and

Three Yankee starters, IP 34 1/3, SO 33, W 3

Also, did you know that Derek Jeter was the oldest shortstop (35) to play for a World Series championship team since Pee Wee Reese (37) of the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers? We didn’t. Thanks, Game 6 DVD cover!

On the inside of each disc case, there’s an inning-by-inning, play-by-play log.

Overall, the DVD set is nice for posterity purposes. It allows you the opportunity to re-live the 2009 season whenever you want, and makes for a good addition to your Yankee archives. We just wish they had included some behind-the-scenes footage, like NFL Films style. It would have added much more substance and made it a more compelling purchase.
