Let’s make this quick, because we’re in the middle of watching Jersey Shore.
Here’s a list of why Mark DeRosa would be a terrible signing for the Yankees:
1. Who cares if he can play every position if he stinks at most of them (OF being the exception).
2. He’s coming off wrist surgery and his worst season since 2005 (highlighted by a .319 OBP)
3. He’ll be 35.
4. Other utility guys like Chone Figgins and Placido Polanco have set the market with multi-year deals.
Signing DeRosa is a move the Mets would make (assuming he was of Hispanic descent), not the Yankees.

hahaha gotta love it.

He’d be a July DFA.

Most over rated player on the market. I don’t get teams obsession with this guy.
Steve December 11, 2009 08:28
DeRosa is not coming close to Polanco or Figgins money, so point 4 is irrelevant.
Signing DeRosa to be your starting LFer is dumb.
Signing DeRosa for something like $8M/2 to back up LF/RF and 3B would not be that dumb.
Carry on with the negativity.

It’s a one year solution, expecting a better free agent market next off season.

is every post going to be a quick analytical blurb?

derosa blows.

DeRosa can be a Spanish name. Mark would be best off claiming this if he wants the Mets to offer him a contract. Everyone knows Italians aren’t welcome in Queens

Steve – So you’re willing to paid $4 million dollars a year for a half melky/half Wilson Benemet composite. You must show up at the strip club with a bunch of blank checks for the dancers.
Black Jack McDowell December 11, 2009 22:10
Benemet? Dude, if you’re not sure of the name just google it.
That being said, you make a good point.

Los Mets

Following in the footsteps of Chad Ocho Cinco, Mark DeRosa has changed his name to Mark De La Rosa and the Mets have offered him a multi year deal. They have also advised David Wright to take a Salsa Dance class this offseason

But he is Italian and from Jersey

Kelly Johnson was apparently non-tendered by the Braves, what about him as a left field possibility? He hasn’t played left since 2005, but he put up 17.9 UZR that year for whatever that is worth, and shouldn’t have much trouble making the transition to left (can’t be worse out there than damon). More importantly though, his bat is gonna rebound after last year’s .249 BABIP fueled disappointing season, and if he can hit like he did in 2007-2008 he is an asset. (For what it’s worth, Bill James projects him to have a .350 wOBA next year, which is actually better than he projects Damon to do).

Well, Melky himself is going to make somewhere close to $3M this year. And Melky can’t play 3B on the days that Alex has to rest. But if he could, he might be worth a little more cash.
Maybe $8M/2 is a little high in this market, but signing DeRosa for a few million bucks would probably improve every roster in the league. He can play everywhere and give you league average offense.
He’s not a starter, as I said, but he’s a much, much better player than Betemit.

DeRosa would not be bad in the “Hairston role”, my fear is that Girardi would fall in love with a paisan(moving on from Ransom) and run him out in LF everyday.
Rob A from BBD December 13, 2009 02:31
If he signed for $2-$4 million then I’d say go for it. The time for getting him has passed.
Kevin S. December 13, 2009 08:57
I agree with Ben on Kelly Johnson, if the Yanks decide to go with that type of player. It’d be nice if he could play short, but I’d take him either way.
