The Boy Wonder signed the 34-year old Marco Scutaro to play SS for 2 years with an option year while surrendering a first round pick to do so (The Blue Jays offered him arbitration and he’s a Type A free agent).
This after Scutaro’s career year (111 OPS+ in 2009, 92 for his career) coincided with a .304 BABIP (.289 for his career). In both 2007 & 2008, Scutaro failed to break a .700 OPS.
With the glove he has a career -2.9 UZR/150 in 415 games at SS and had a modestly successful 1.0 UZR/150 there in his “breakout” 2009 campaign.
The Underdogs can look forward to at least 2 years of average to below average SS play and the shortest middle infield in the majors.
Word is that Scutaro has already starting growing his beard out.

Fast moving arms while running and a height disadvantage = fan favorite

But WAIT…. hes a ‘YANKEE KILLER’!!! hahaha Theo probably tugged one out to that vid of him hittin the walk off off of Mo after puttin the pen down on that one.
Its funny how bad their shortstops have been. I bet that organization SALIVATES when they look at Ramiro Pena on our bench… they couldnt draft talent like that if they tried. So sad…

Actually they did a pretty good job drafting a shortstop named Hanley Ramirez. Of course they traded him, And I’m not sure Hanley’s being signed happenned on Theo’s watch.

Of course, he’ll hit a walk off homer off Mariano in the first series at Fenway, then go on to hit .240 with 6 HR the rest of the year.

Yeah they traded Hanley for Lowell and Beckett who nearly single-handedly took the team on his back to the 2007 Title. What a horrible deal.
Sean December 4, 2009 22:09
Yeah, they traded him to the Marlins for Lowell and Beckett which means with limited negotiation, he could have gotten Lowell for a bag of baseballs and Beckett for a slightly used fungo bat. What a deal.
I can only assume “Team of the Decade” refers to the team that won 2 world championships, 4 AL pennants, and 8 AL East crowns and not the team that won 2, 2, and 1 respectively.

Not to mention no one said it was a horrible deal. For 2007 it was great. For 2009 and beyond? Ehhh

brilliant. I guess this is their Jason Varitek move of this offseason.

Saying the 2007 trade was good is retarted. Who says they wouldn’t have won a title with Hanley? I personally think they could have won more. Lowell sucks now, and Beckett is in decline. Guess what, Hanley is one of the best players in the game. I am so happy they signed Scutaro. A waste of money, picks, talent, etc.
KyleLitke December 5, 2009 14:27
Wait, who carried Boston to a 2007 title? You can’t possibly have meant Beckett. He pitched fantastic but did you see his run support? The least he got was 4 runs, he was getting 8-10 every other game. It’s absolutely insulting to the rest of the team to claim Beckett did it himself. But what do you expect from Sox fans, I guess…

Scutaro stinks.
