Chien-Ming Wang’s career as a Yankee seems on the verge of ending, with the club due to non-tender him a contract and fading hopes for a new deal before tonight’s midnight deadline.
The right-hander has been linked to interest from the Dodgers, and one report put Los Angeles as a prominent destination for Wang, reuniting him with Joe Torre. Under Torre, Wang twice was a 19-game winner.

Thanks, Chien-Ming.

I’m not so sure why everybody thinks this is the end of the line. The Yanks still like Wang, they just need him on a minor-league deal so he can work through his issues until he’s ready again. If there’s a team willing to give him a major-league deal at this point, that team is pretty stupid, IMO.

I really wish they would keep him.

Sad to see this guy’s career end like this. He was one of my favs. and a home grown talent. Wish him luck, but it truly is all over for him.
Bababooey December 12, 2009 13:59
i just don’t think this guy is done.
greg 23 December 12, 2009 17:12
He’s not done. Bad move, underrated pitcher who carried a crap staff for two years.

3 Shoulder surgeries… shoulder is not the same thing as an elbow, you never fully recover. I don’t understand how its not obvious to everyone on here that Wang isn’t the same and probably never will be. He was great when he was throwing that 97mph sinker though. So is life.

hope thats not a korea joke cause he’s from taiwan

So the Yankees don’t want to pay 4 million dollars for him. What exactly he is worth really depends on how he has looked rehabbing and what their experts say about his injury, things I am very sure none of us know. The Yankees also are not in need of low probability starting pitchers. To they extent that they want to roll the dice they want to roll the dice with not fully explored young talent rather than someone coming off catastrophic surgery.
Perhaps one of the middle income teams is desperate enough for pitching that he is worth a major league contract. If so good luck to him.
SuperDevil December 12, 2009 21:43
The history of Baseball is filling with talented, young pitchers that did really well and because of injuries, were never the same again.
The odds of him being the 19 game winner he once was is very unlikely. As someone pointed out, you are never the same after a shoulder injury.
He will also not be able to pitch this year, most likely.
Asking the Yankees to pay him $5 million a year while he rehabs is just wrong.

I`ll never forget that 2 hit complete game against the Red Sux. One of my favorite games ever!

He will be missed. Good luck to him in his future endeavor. Greg23 said it best, he did carry a crap staff for 2 years. It wore him out in the ’07 playoff against Cleveland. The ankle injury ruined him, not his pitching. An unfortunate day in Houston this generation’s Yankee fan will not forget.
Butcher December 13, 2009 12:14
Joe you are right…the fucking idiocy that is inter league play ruined this guy.
FUCK INTER LEAGUE PLAY!

John Smoltz came back from shoulder surgery at the age of 42 less than a year after having the surgery. Wang is scheduled to be good to go by the end of may – early June. Why the Yanks will let him walk is beyond me. This team has signed guys like Jon Lieber to rehab for 1 year before starting for them, are interested in signing guys like Sheets, and gave Carl Pavano 40 million over 4 yrs. Wang was the Yankees best pitcher for 2 and half years and they won’t give him $4 million which is chump change for a guy with as many wins as he has. Whether he comes back to be the 19 game winner or not he deserved the opportunity to come back from rehab as a Yankee.

i agree with old school

So… About the shoulder surgery thing…
Anybody seen Kuo’s stuff? Still looks pretty good in my opinion.
Asian arms are freaky! O_o
Mobi December 16, 2009 16:09
Kuo’s surgery was NOT on his shoulder.
It’s Tommy-John elbow surgery, which rehabs well for lots of pitchers. His elbow is actually more fragile than lots of other guys who have been through the same thing. And his stuff is always that good (only FB).

I do believe Wang will be on mound again at Yankee Stadium and face hitter in strip.
Thomas December 30, 2009 19:14
The photoshop is excellent because Wang is Taiwanese, which makes it even funnier.
