We’ve been vehemently accused by some of visitors for liking hitters who look for walks. While we’re honored that Dusty Baker and his friends read NoMaas, we must admit that this accusation is true. We like guys who try to build up pitch counts. We’re ashamed, but it’s true. We’re so sorry. We feel like we’ve let all of our visitors down.
Nick Johnson is a horrible signing, probably one of the worst in Yankee history. In 2009, he was third in MLB in pitches per PA with 4.38. That’s disgusting and he will rot in hell for that. Since 2005, only two players have had a higher OBP, and that’s Chipper Jones and Albert Pujols. You are filth, Nick. Filth.
So again, we apologize with all our heart. Please give us another chance. Here’s to first pitch swingin’!!

hopefully, his vagina holds up this time

Must be sad to see Johnny Damon go then.
Jack December 19, 2009 09:28
You’re right! Just another worthless player that clogs the bases.
Russ December 19, 2009 11:03
Ya because you want a guy at the plate that gets more strikes in one season then Joe Di got in his whole career!
Brendan December 19, 2009 12:00
Think you’re inviting this kind of reaction by talking about Nick like he’s the second coming. Nick is a good player. He is not 12-articles-in-the-last-week-between-nomaas-yankeeist-and-rab-clamoring-for-his-return good.
This move seems to have been generated totally by blog buzz … some of us would like to see you use your influence and rhetorical and statistical prowess to help get Holliday into a striped suit this offseason.
Vince December 19, 2009 13:23
Nick ” the stick” is no the second coming, but as long as he can hold up and stay healthy hell be a consistent base runner that this powerful yankee lineup can use to put runs on the board. He is also a comfortable fit considering he started his career with the yanks.
Brian December 19, 2009 15:17
great signing
he and Swisher will piss off pitchers to no end this year
Bronx Blogger December 19, 2009 16:02
Yup. Having more runners on base when Tex and A-Rod get up to bad is definitely a bad thing.

Does anyone else realize that if the Yankees had kept “sui”, they would have just gotten rid of “Mat Damon”??
burnett type luck? December 19, 2009 17:37
nick johnson since 2001:
has played more than 130 games 3 times.
has 450 ABs 3 times.
over 600plate appearances once.
glass nick is a good player WHEN he plays. this has just as much risk (play time wise not money wise obviously) as burnett signing…which we got reallyyyy lucky with last year.
Bronx Blogger December 19, 2009 18:55
do you realize that johnny damon can fall apart at any time?
your logic, while is a nice try, means nothing when youre comparing it to an aging, terribly defensive, outfielder.
youre basically asking the yankees to gamble on damon instead of johnson. but its still a gamble…
Dick Ear December 19, 2009 19:00
lol
Hopefully he carries that awesome .405 SLG% over from last season.
Another thing: Pujols and Chipper can actually hit. One is, quite possibly, the best hitter the game has ever seen, and the other is one of the top switch hitters ever. The talent gap between Chipper and Johnson is gigantic. The talent gap between Pujols and Johnson is immeasurable. Chipper and Pujols have average and massive power to go with their OMG OBP!!!11!!, while Johnson doesn’t. At all.
Frederick the Elephant December 19, 2009 19:01
OBP is the most important stat of a hitter. You fag.

Hi, my handle is Bronx Blogger. I am going to attack an argument that no one is making to defend an opinion I came to hold through groupthink. I sincerely hope for society’s sake that I am neither registered to vote nor licensed to own a firearm. Have a wonderful day.

does anyone realize that both Mariano and Jeter are going into contract negotiations next year? maybe, instead of paying $10 million for Damon and $7.5 or $8.5 million for Matsui, they just replaced both players for a little over the price it would take to secure Damon’s contract. Jeter and Mariano are going to get ginormous pay bumps and they need to clear some breathing room in their payroll.
Kevin S. December 19, 2009 20:19
Uh, Jeter’s making $21 million in ’10. There’s no friggin’ way that he’s getting a raise off of that heading into his age-37 season, and I doubt Mo will do better than extending at his current salary.
Frederick the Elephant December 19, 2009 20:25
That’s true, especially when you consider how the FO has been offering lower salaries to older players.

brendan, i was responding to the post directly above me concerning the longevity of nick johnson. i then compared it the potential longevity of johnny damon.
while i know the poster above me didnt specifically mention JD, its been something i’ve been hearing for a few days now which is why i brought it up. maybe i jumped the gun on that one but calm down
cute George Orwell reference btw
Butcher December 20, 2009 09:17
I don’t hate the signing, but you guys are getting real crazy with all this Nick Johnson talk. ENOUGH ALREADY.
Steve December 20, 2009 16:02
I love the comments that people are talking too much about the Nick Johnson signing.
It’s the offseason. He’s the only player they’ve signed so far.
What else is there to talk about?
Here’s one: OMG, TEH YANKS NEED TO SIGN HOLLIDAY!!!
MyTriState Yankees December 21, 2009 12:37
Brendan – do you really think Brian Cashman makes any signings based on blog buzz? if he really does, he should be fired right now.
I think its reasonable to assume that as the DH, Johnson will probably stay healthy. i also have a hard time getting down on him for the broken bones – broken bone injuries arent necessarily durability injuries, are they? but yes, he has missed a lot of time in his career.
Damon is an older guy and could break down; i think thats fair. he did come out of world series game with a leg issue, and he’s asking for the moon. haven’t heard Damon has any other suitors…
i think the yankees grabbed Nick the stick back to be an on base guy, to take pitches at the top of the lineup and get on base. i think he can do that. if you’re looking for a ton of power from your DH, Nick is not your guy. but he will take pitches, get walks and get on base. THIS IS NOT A BAD THING.
Manny December 21, 2009 13:54
is the intention for Nick Johnson to bat 3rd in this lineup? otherwise did we sign him to clog up the bases when Melky and Swisher come up to bat?
while I like signing a guy who gets on base alot (especailly after trading for a guy who strikes out alot, mind you) I worry that he may just contribute to the “men left on base-itis” that this team has struggled with since before i grew pubes… just saying
Steve December 21, 2009 14:18
“Clogging the bases” is like the Bat Signal of dumb baseball arguments.
burnett type luck? December 21, 2009 21:28
our outfield last year:damon-melky-swish (gardner)
this year: melky-granderson-swish.
granderson was brought on to replace damon, and to provide a player who does not have to be in the “rotation” for DH.
however if you want to jsut view the DH spot. i would much prefer damon/matsui over johnson as they have both provided better longevity than nick johnson over longer careers with better overall #’s. especially considering matsui was a 1-year deal.
also granderson/johnson is a downgrade in the line-up compared to damon/matsui.
jeter-cano-tex-arod-posada-swish-johnson-granderson-melky.
jeter-damon-tex-arod-matsui-posada-cano-swish-melky.
this is our line-up vs. beckett-lackey-lester.
i think johnson kills the line-up…if he even can play over 100 games.
