Just hours after the New York Yankees agreed to terms with outfielder Randy Winn, officially ending Johnny Damon’s chances of a return to the Bronx, agent Scott Boras is trying like hell to save some face.
“The Yankees never even made an offer to me regarding Johnny Damon during the entire process,” says Boras.
And in response, Ca$hMoney said this:
“On Dec 17,” Cashman said moments ago, “we were told not to make an offer for a penny less than $13 million a year for two years.”
“Boras told me I wouldn’t find a No. 2 hitter for less than $13 million,” Cashman continued. “I found one (Nick Johnson) for half that.”

Seems kind of childish on Cashman’s part. Realistically he probably would have considered a smaller deal.

As they say on “Scrubs” ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM!
Sean January 28, 2010 01:27
I don’t think it’s childish at all. Boras is publicly badmouthing Cash, and in a market like New York, that warrants a response. I doubt Cash would have said anything if he thought there was a chance Johnny was coming back. Still, I’ll be disappointed if Damon ends up signing for pennies somewhere else.
Doug Soetart January 28, 2010 02:20
Matsui, Damon out, Nick Johnson and Randy Winn in.
Cashman can kiss my a$$.
Thank the lord for Gene Michael and Bob Watson in the early 90′s…

Yo, Ca$h rolled in the studio spittin FIYAH on his guest spot on the new Wu album. Straight up MURDERED that fool Boras.
The Situation January 28, 2010 03:17
Hey Douggie boy,
What about All-Star OF Curtis Granderson, a better, younger version of J Damon? And what about innings-eater Javy Vazquez?
Cashmoney knows the situation.
We'reGonnaWinn. January 28, 2010 07:42
Look, guys.. lets face it. We’re all gonna miss Matsui’s production. What we won’t miss is Damon’s arm in the outfield, his decreasing range, and his slowing speed. (let us not forget injury as he came up limping in the WS.) Granderson is an all-star caliber outfielder. Damon is a greedy bitch, who did the same thing to Boston, because “The Yankees wanted me”. Boras and Damon represent all that’s wrong in baseball. Not sad to see him go. Good luck winning rings on any other team you neanderthal. Have fun platooning the DH spot in Tampa. PEACE!
Butcher January 28, 2010 07:45
Didn’t Randy Winn just celebrate his 60th birthday recently?
Jeterisgod January 28, 2010 08:22
Can The Butcher come up with an intelligent response?
Manny January 28, 2010 08:53
fuck Johnny Damon and Scott Boras… you get greedy and ignore market pressures, you end up broke and hungry, or playing in that shithole in Tampa for less than what the Yankees “would have offered”…
Matt January 28, 2010 09:37
Anyone who thinks this team got worse by getting more starting pitching and fewer old men should go root for the Mets.

that’s all this site is good for anymore. no more prospect analysis, no more decent photoshops. it’s fallen off a cliff, and fast. sad.

I think its safe to say that none of us knows what its like negotiating with big league agents. So what ever etiquette is proper when handling negotiations isn’t apparent to most of us. Clearly Cashman takes issue with Boras’ methods, as was obvious with the A-Rod opt out saga.
To me, it seems Cashaman is setting the tone for the future making Scott Boras realize he isn’t always in control. That, or he’s taking things personally and letting contempt for Boars cloud his judgment. From what I’ve seen from cash though I’m inclined to believe the former.
If i were to be critical about Cashman, it would be about singing Winn over Johnson not Winn over Damon but I’m going to see how things play out. You have to admit that there’s a lot of flexibility for trades now at the deadline.
Butcher January 28, 2010 12:11
I don’t get the flexibility of trades comment. Who would the Yankees be trading? Assuming Montero is off limits.
The way I look at it is…you’re locked into Hughes/Joba as starter/setup…in some order. Which I don’t mind. I like both of them…but who do you even think about trading?

Pedro's Perm January 28, 2010 15:04
Damon was being greedy…..Put that picture of Cash back up in the ninja outfit!
Nicky’s HR totals are way down though….that does concern me a bit. Being a lefty in Yankee Staduim might help some.
Vazquez for MELKY CABRERA? That was the steal of the century. I like Melky. I really do…but lets be honest, he is a 4th outfielder at best.
Jeter for President January 28, 2010 15:22
@Butcher
When we talk about flexibility of trades your talking about a salary dump, not a Blockbuster. Your looking for a B level player who fits a need, and when I say need, I mean future needs. A left fielder might not be the major need at midseason. Injury could plague another position and we would be trading for that. A Trade Deadline candidate is clearly someone your just spending money on and not giving up much in prospect. I think theres a few we can give up with out making a major impact on the system.
Voomo Zanzibar January 28, 2010 15:43
Pedro’s Perm should pitch the 8th inning.

I’ve lost some life on my fastball, though. Some Soul-Glo should do the trick.

Hey, don’t forget about the measley 8 mil I’m making when I hit #2 against righties.
Voomo Zanzibar January 28, 2010 16:11
Okay, since our roster is now SET with Randy Winn, here’s my suggestion:
Trade Randy Winn, Nick Johnson, Sergio Mitre, Kei Igawa and Joba Chamberlain to
Joe Torre and Don Mattingly
for
Manny Ramirez and Clayton Kershaw.
Then sign Pedro Martinez and Rickey Henderson.
#28!

We upgraded our defense in pitching, we took a hit on offense.
It’s a slightly better team than the 09 squad, but this is kind of a shame. Damon’s one hell of a player, fading defense and weak arm or not.
The Cashman nut gargling has to end; he’s a middling GM. Half brilliant, half brain dead. I never know what to expect from the all-mighty, Freemasonic-acting Cashman. He’ll go out and silently land a huge player like Teixeira, or he’ll pass up many, many solid chances(Gomes, Johnson, Damon) for….Winn. Yup.

I would have prefered to bring Damon back for two years as a LF/DH. I would have used him as the fulltime DH next year and Nick Johnson as the DH for just for this year.
However, I don’t have a problem with moves by Cash. What I don’t understand is why Cashman cares what people who bitch about the size of the Yankees payroll think. In interviews he’s always trying to prove he can do it cheaper. He shouldn’t tie his own hands.
Carl Crawford January 28, 2010 21:26

At least 20 people have asked me what I would have done.
Nick January 29, 2010 03:01
Why is it that people think Damon has been replaced by Winn? In reality, Gardner has replaced Melky in the outfield and Winn replaces Gardner on the bench. Curtis Granderson, the 29 year old who hit 30 homers last year is replacing Johnny Damon. And considering that taking the downgrade from Melky/Gardner to Garnder/Winn means we got a 200+ inning, 200+ strikeout 4th starter, I think anyone who is unhappy about this offseason is not a logical person.
Mr. Spock January 29, 2010 04:16
I am in agreement Nick; the Yankee’s off-season has been handled with an abundance of logic. Live long and prosper. *Vulcan*
Jason O. January 29, 2010 09:41
First it was the A-Rod opt out fiasco, then a massive failure in representing Damon. Scott will have to sit directly behind home plate all season and mug for the camera to restore his “superagent” reputation.
Butcher January 29, 2010 12:38
I don’t think Boras is really hurting LOL. The guy could probably buy and sell you a 100 times over.
