Despite dramatically overplaying his hand, Damon is still living in la-la land, not too mention acting like a Stage 5 clinger.
First, he thinks baseball will examine the luxury tax, specifically because he didn’t sign with the Yankees. What?? Dude, you’re really not that good.
He said baseball’s luxury tax may have played a role in the offer.
“I definitely thought there’d be more talks monetarily,” Damon said. “Everyone knew what a great fit (it was); so did Cashman; so did the Steinbrenners; that’s the way (it is) with the budget and the (luxury tax), which is why it probably will be discussed at the next (collective) bargaining session.
And then there’s this gem:
Damon, who claims several teams are interested in him, said he was hopeful the Yankees didn’t encounter the same problems with free-agent to be Derek Jeter next year.
“I hope Derek is not offered a 45 percent pay cut,” Damon said.
Johnny, you are no Derek Jeter.

Derek Jeter is making $21 million next year. I hope he does take at least a 45% pay cut.

what a dumbasssssssssssssss
Jesse Brinkley January 30, 2010 00:33
Damon should direct his angst towards Boras.
bartonbickle January 30, 2010 00:38
In a few years we’ll all be pleased that Damon left when he did. Instead of a money grubbing DH with a low SLG, we can remember him as the guy who scored the winning run in a crucial World Series Game 4 almost by himself with an incredibly persistent AB vs. Lidge and brilliant baserunning.
Better way for him to go out.
JoeThunder January 30, 2010 07:21
Damon will be missed there’s no question but to think you’re worth the type of money you got 4 years ago is absolutely insane.
Butcher January 30, 2010 07:35
I agree with him on the luxury tax. There shouldn’t even be a luxury tax or revenue sharing. That’s total commie bullshit that does not belong in baseball.
Derek Jeter will have to take a HUGE pay cut for his next contract. There’s no doubt about it.
MyTriState.us Yankees Blog January 30, 2010 08:28
Butcher,
The ‘total commie bullshit’ that the luxury tax may be is the only thing keeping the salary cap out of baseball, which any Knicks fan can tell you doesn’t help when your team is run by a bunch of knuckleheads.
gfd January 30, 2010 10:10
The Players Union has to agree to a salary cap,THEY NEVER WILL!!
Derek will be the First Yankee to reach 3000 hits, oh yeah the Yankees will be good to him. Jeter might want to stay at the same pay himself. The Yankees will be kind!
Damon isn’t a farm raised Yankee, he has diminished defensively Derek still has all his arsenal intact, He was great this his non-contract year! Sportsman of the year.
Damon is in shock and his ego can’t believe the Yankees can move on without him. When he finally comes back to earth, he’ll get an opportunity to see where Boras failed him greatly. Damon gave an interview on the YES Network, he validates Cashman’s account of the negotiations, and shows Boras to be a liar. He says The Yankees offered 2/14
and Scott offered 2/22.
The most telling thing is how blinded Damon is to what Boras did to him with his misread of the market, and his holding out for an unreasonable amount the Yankees were never going to agree to. Damon in the interview says, Scott did a great job. How did Scott, when You are off the team, you wanted to stay on, but now your’re not needed, because Scott ticked off Cashman and moved on to different players?

Jeter will get 3/60 bet on it. Him and Mo will get whatever they want until the end. Yeah from a pure numbers view it makes no sense but we are talking about 2 of the greatest players of all time that are still doing it at an insanely high level. PR nightmare if either leave. All these one year deals (Vazquez, Winn, Nick the Stick) were partly to keep $ freed up next year for Derek, Mo and probably Cliff Lee (assuming Mauer stays in Twinville). I’m thinking Mo and Jeter get the same $ as this year in there next deals.

He must love having Scott Boras as his agent more than he liked being a Yankee.
BernieWilliamsDay.org January 30, 2010 11:05
Hardly anybody is Derek Jeter, but even if the Yankees DID ask him to take a 45% pay cut, he’d still earn what, $10 million a year? millions of dollars… hard to relate to Johnny Damon’s pay cut sob story. baseball free agent contracts are formulated in a barter system and a marketplace, not based on performance.

i think you people are overreacting to damons comments, i think you all need some mental help, i bet you all watch tmz and are into celebrity gossip also, you people live off gossip, i bet you all eat mayonnaise sandwiches and receive coupons and federal aid, Damon is worth more than the 7m texas paid vladdy, thats plain and simple and anyone in damons position would do the same thing, you all should sniff your own poop
Voomo Zanzibar January 30, 2010 16:35
The SF Giants need him.
They won 88 games with exactly ONE good offensive player last year. Bungie fucking Molina was the 4 hitter.
Johnny will go back to california, get his medical marijuana caveman card, and by May 1st will be thinking “i am so happy not to be in new york anymore.”
RustyJohn January 31, 2010 00:15
Hmmm, Jeter was the 2nd best offensive shortstop in the majors last season and in the top 5 defensively. Me thinks it may be more difficult to find a shortstop as good as Jeter v. finding a defensively challenged noodle-armed left-fielder.
Butcher January 31, 2010 09:54
Voomo good post! Caveman med card and he’ll smoke purple all day.
Vito January 31, 2010 15:56
Johnny’s worth exactly what someone will pay him which is currently a hell of a lot lower then 13 mil a year. My guess is he is hurting on money. Between losing money in the Madoff crap and that trophy wife of his, he is probably living paycheck to paycheck. I remember an interview last spring when his money was frozen briefly during the Madoff investigation, he said it was tough because he had a mortgage to pay. Mortgage? Seriously? When you make 13 million a YEAR?
anti-redsox January 31, 2010 15:59
vito , the higher you make the higher you pay, you may seem like 13 million is a lot but to them they get in depth of mortgages that go at par to that amount and their lifestyle
Chuck January 31, 2010 20:57
Johnny had Boris for a agent. It cost him a shot at another world series. The players want to Keep using a gold digger like Boras who is more worried about HIS payday than the player. Damon is and was a good fit for us but after the Crap Boras pulled with A-Rod it is a wonder why players keep the gold digger as a agent. He is over rated.

I believe Damon has proven to be a versatile and subtle performer who is much, much better than his pal Ben Affleck.

You know it would be nice if once a player was like “i wouldn’t mind taking a small pay cut to stay with a team I love with the greatest fans in the game, and a chance to win a world series every year..”. I’m not holding my breath, but wouldn’t it be nice if Jeter offered to take a little less, instead of it being all on the team having to offer too much to keep a guy? Maybe in a perfect world.
