E-FO, Yankees’ brass messes up on this one

Both Randy Winn and Reed Johnson project as slightly below average hitters. And, looking at their UZRs, both would do fine work with the glove as LF replacements. But, the skill most needed in a Yankees fourth outfielder is the ability to hit left handed pitchers. Two of the Yankees three OFs have had serious issues hitting lefties. Leveraging a LOOGY against Granderson or Gardner in a late game situation is such an obvious strategy, even Mike Scioscia will be able to figure it out. This is why we at NoMaas advocated for Reed Johnson and his career .841 OPS vs LHPs.
Now comes word that the Dodgers have signed RJ on a one year deal worth a measly $800k, yet Brian Cashman spent 250% more than that on a signing that does not address the Yankees' most glaring bench need. It's been a great offseason overall for Ca$hMoney... but he botched this one.

Yankees Fielders, July 2010
C F. Cervelli
1B J. Damon
2B N. Garciaparra
3B Ramiro Pena
SS Jeter
LF C. Granderson
CF B. Gardner

DH M. Ramirez
I’ll be booing Brett Gardner, Randy Winn, and Steve on opening day.
Yes, let’s boo the 4th OFer!!
Who else can we boo? How about Cervelli!! What about Mike Harkey? He answers the phone like a ninny.
ill be booing brett gardner, randy winn, cervelli, tanyon sturtze and steve on opening day
“Bubba Crosby will be our opening day center fielder.” Remember Brian Cashman saying that? It didn’t happen, so perhaps Cashman still has a plan yet to be unveiled. On the other hand, I dont see the Yankees pitch hitting for a hitter like Curtis Granderson, so we’re really only talking about Brett Gardner’s at bats on the days they face a left handed starter, and considering he’ll bat 9th, we’re talking 3 at bats at the most, right? Gardner is fast, he can bunt for these at bats. If this is the Yankees biggest concern, we Yankees fans should consider ourselves lucky.
Kind of off topic…who is the fastest player in MLB? Where does Brett Gardner rank? He has to be top 10 I’d think…but I’m not sure. I know Gathright was a speedster and it’s probably the only reason he’s even in the MLB.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Gardner was indeed the fastest player in MLB. Surely top 10, possible 1-5.
Are you insane?
He’s not black
the fastest player is joey gathright , hes also black
and on opening day im not booing gathright
Speed Score is obviously not the same as a stopwatch, but FWIW, Gardner led baseball in it last year: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=n&type=1&season=2009&month=0
Okay, apparently that link doesn’t hold the sort – you have to click on ‘Spd’ twice to see it.
I went to the glossary and it says 4 components make up that speed score. I couldn’t find what those components were. Gardner is a fast dude…no doubt about it.
Oakland potentially has a good leadoff guy in Rajai Davis. I tell you what if Gardner can do what Davis was doing at the end of last year…I’ll be on the Gardner bandwagon. It’d be awesome to see Gardner become that kind of player.
Yeah, their glossary can be kind of spotty. I remembered it being introduced in a post: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/speed-score
Appleman breaks down the math in the comments section, if you’re interested.
Gardner is fast… remember that in the park home run he had last year? and I remember a triple he had, during which when he rounded 1st, he fell and still got to 3rd standing up. So yeah, Gardner is fast!

Looked at it. Pretty interesting. The runs scored being factored in kind of seems to throw me a bit. That kind of factors who hits behind the guy I think.
Remember the NFL’s fastest man…do they still do that? It’d be a cool all star event…I think I’d rather see that then the HR derby.
Did that ball hit the drain or something? It took a crazy bounce. Span is fast himself and tracked it quickly, but Brett was a blur on that play.
Hopefully Joe G gives him the green light when he gets on.
at the all-star break:
91 hits, 22 doubles, 13 triples, 4 homers, 60 runs, 44 steals
all star
Go to Survivinggrady.com. It’s a Red Sox version of NoMaas. I’ve been ripping them and the Sox for 2 days now. I want us all to infiltrate the enemy to no end. We must take down the uriNation.
shut your mouth you pine tar licking redsox site promoting, midle finger in your anus sticking modaflower
Marcus Thames – a guy off the bench who can hit lefties. But now the Yankees have both him and Winn, instead of just Reed Johnson (who is a shitty, shitty player, only a tiny bit better than Thames, really).
E-Nomaas.
god, you’re fucking dumb
i like the reunion, we should push hard to get scott proctor back
