Who talks like this?
From the Detroit News:
Johnny Damon, the free-agent outfielder who helped the Yankees to a world championship in 2009, would be happy to talk with the Tigers.
“Johnny believes the addition of him to Detroit’s lineup would make the Tigers a winner,” Scott Boras, Damon’s agent, said during a Monday phone conversation.
Boras added, quoting Damon before Damon signed earlier contracts with the Yankees and Boston Red Sox: “I told you I could make the Yankees a winner, and I told you before I left Oakland (where he played in 2001) I could make a Boston a winner.”
Boras says Damon has the same disposition toward the Tigers in 2010: “I can make the Detroit Tigers a winner,” Boras said, citing Damon’s words to him in December.

I just really hope that the Yankees that Damon is a younger, healthier and winnier player than Derek Jeter and decides to sign him instead of extending Jeter after the season.

Ah, Boras has suckered the Tigers into singing some pretty bad contracts. Why not give it another shot.
Fat Pete February 1, 2010 15:29
I would love to watch Johnny Damon attempt to play OF there. I’d also love to see him hit 4 HR’s at best there over 81 games.

Not to get off topic, but I saw that link to ESPN’s “realignment” post and am I the only person that thinks David Schoenfield is the absolute stupidest person ever?
Espeically, when it starts with the Yanks are the reason why Baseball is unfair. Then the writer bends over so much that he can stick his head up his own ass, in describing why the Red Sox aren’t bad for Baseball.
See, the Pirates are closer to the Red Sox in payroll, then the Red Sox are to the Yankees.
Besides ignoring the fact that he has no idea what he’s talking about. He ignores the fact that the Sox pay over slot for draft picks and have no issue giving gigantic posting fees for over-rated Japanese pitchers.
The Pirates payroll was $48 million.
The Sox’s payroll was $140 million.
The Yankees payroll was $220 million.
But, the Pirates are closer to the Sox in payroll then the Red Sox are to the Yankeess??????
Add the fact that his proposal is absolutely moronic. I can see moving the Phillies and Mets to the same division as the Red Sox and Yankees. Maybe the Tigers too. Have all the West Coast teams in one League (to eliminate having to stay up to 3 in the morning and having to look at Mike Scioscia fat, f’cking face). But, his idea of rotating teams based on record is moronic (except if you are the Yanks and Red Sox).
I should also point out that he’s a Mets fan who doesn’t think the Mets, Cubs, and Dodgers count because they weren’t sucessful in 2009.
Sean February 1, 2010 16:30
Of course Damon was an important part of the Yanks’ and Sox championship teams, but it’s not as if he was the missing piece that turned either club into a World Series winner. He didn’t get a ring until his 3rd full season with the Sox and his 4th season with the Yanks.
Both teams also had significant offseason acquisitions before their World Series wins (Sox with Schilling; Yanks with Tex, CC, Burnett, and Swish). I think each of those guys has a more legitimate claim to the “I-made-this-team-a-winner” argument, though none of them are douchey enough to come out and say it like Damon (Schilling might be, actually).
Alex Rodriguez February 1, 2010 16:33
My MVP year is coming. 2010 myself for MVP. Vote. I love you guys.
PaulieWalnutsLoafers February 1, 2010 16:49
I swear I made the same comment on another site this morning. This dude is so desperate, it’s pathetic! And the balls to say that he has made the Yanks and Sox winners???? Last I heard, there were 25 players on a Major League roster. I always loved Damon but he’s been acting like a greedy little prick and it’s getting easier by the day to write his ass off.
J.D., have fun in Motown. Good riddance!

(Re-Posted Comment By Myself)
You know it would be nice if once a player was like “i wouldn’t mind taking a small pay cut to stay with a team I love with the greatest fans in the game, and a chance to win a world series every year..”. I’m not holding my breath, but wouldn’t it be nice if Jeter offered to take a little less, instead of it being all on the team having to offer too much to keep a guy? Maybe in a perfect world.
Voomo Zanzibar February 1, 2010 19:39
I dont get it.
Is this site run by, and frequented by, Yankees Fans, or not?
Why all the hatin on a guy who averaged 102 runs, 19 homers, 23 steals, and a 114+ ops over his Yankee career?
He was the best Yankee Left Fielder since… Hideki Matsui!
What did he do to deserve this disrespect besides help our team win a World Series?
We all agree that Boras is a douche.
That doesnt make every player represented by him a douche-by-association.
It was Boras who said those things.
And what he said is standard sports-talk.
“i want to win, i want to help make the team a winner, blah blah blah.”
Nothing to get our collective panties in a twist about.
And so what if he wants to make as much money as possible?
Damon has made 97 Million dollars, salary. And if he really got hit by the Madoff thing, It Could All Be Gone.
Dude is looking at the twilight of his career, and everything that he has worked for might have been pissed away in a Ponzi scheme. He knows he’s got one more good payday left, and he would be stupid to not try and get paid.
And he has earned it.
Mofo has played 140+ games, in the majors, for 14 straight years.
120+ in the minors for three years before that.
In his interviews he may not have the Perfect-Player-Speak down like DJ does, but he is as forthright and honest as any pro athlete you are going to hear speak.
Some folks on this thread need to find some other outlet for their Angst, or whatever it is. These are human beings we are talking about, people You Have Never Met. Grow up and show some respect.

Boras: “And Johnny said to me, over bacon and eggs the other morning, ‘You should put out there that I said I can make the Mets a winner’ but I decided to say he said that he can make the Tigers a winner . . . ”
The rest, as they say, is history.

Didn’t this website mock the sox media for the way it trashes its former player on their way out of town…
This weird obsession with Damon must end. Is it really that weird that a player wants to get paid, or feels that its not right to have his salary decrease by more than 50%?
I hope he gets signed, I’ll always remember the double steal.
RustyJohn February 2, 2010 01:11
Why would anyone want Boras as their agent anymore? Yes, in the past he has obtained amazing deals for his clients, but it just seems the last 2 or 3 years there has been one debacle after another where he totally misread the market costing his client millions.
And why do these players like Damon not have any semblance of rational money management? Loses it in a ponzi scheme? Shoot, if he put that 100 million he made into some CDs, bonds, shoot, even a savings account, he’d be making a couple million a year in the crappy 2% interest he’d make. At least he didn’t let Dykstra invest it for him.
Steve February 2, 2010 07:42
Didn’t this website mock the sox media for the way it trashes its former player on their way out of town…
this is almost applicable.
Steve February 2, 2010 07:43
Boras just got Holliday an 8 year deal. He repped Teixeira last season. He’s doing fine.
Duh February 2, 2010 07:43
Voomo hit it on the head. Damon isn’t doing much of anything, his agent is. All Boras is trying to do, in his own twisted way, is to get the most money for his client, thus ensuring he gets the most money for himself. Damon trusted his agent, his agent misread the market and the Yankees, but in the end Damon will find himself a two or three year deal and earn $20 million or so. This notion of the hometown discount is silly, except maybe for an icon like Jeter. You think $4 million over the course of a contract isn’t significant? Honestly? You think guys don’t have SOME pride, in refusing a huge pay cut to stay? This isn’t the 70s anymore, guys don’t have the same allegience (sp?) to teams like they did. The difference between $16 million that he might have gotten from the Yankees and $20 million that he’ll get somewhere else is 25%. How many of us wouldn’t go work for a competitor for an extra 25%? Remember, folks, it’s business, and to trash a player who contributed heavily to us winning a WS title is silly. Leave that to the Sox fans.

dave: “I hope he gets signed, I’ll always remember the double steal.”
Will you? When you’re old and grey, when your kids have graduated from college, when the mortgage has been paid off…you’ll sit in a rocking chair on the porch and say to yourself, “Ah, the double steal.”
Steve February 2, 2010 08:29
but in the end Damon will find himself a two or three year deal and earn $20 million or so.
No, he won’t.
The best offer he’s going to see is that $14M/2 offer from the Yankees in December.
I’m guessing he signs with the White Sox for $8M/1.
Alvaro Fernandez Ravelo February 2, 2010 08:55
It was on Boras’ interest that Damon NOT sign right away with the Yankees. With no LF Boras could tell the Cardinals that Matt Holliday could sign at any moment with the Yankees. Therefore, he really juiced Holliday’s contract and more commission to Boras at Damon’s expense.
Jerry Randalls February 2, 2010 10:01
OK, joke’s gone on long enough… when you are showing us the real redesign of this site? I don’t visit Nomaas anymore because of its disastrous setup.
Butcher February 2, 2010 10:05
I still think Damon’s a great player with some decent years left.
Whatever teams ends up signing him will have a very good player who never quits.
Greg Oden's Long Penis February 2, 2010 10:16
Who never quits? Holy Sports Cliche, batman!
massapequa parking February 2, 2010 10:58
Jerry Randalls has a point on the site.
Back on topic, raise your hand if you think Johnny Damon ever turned to Boras and said “Scott, I can make the Royals a winner!”
Players (Babe Ruth, Reg-gie, too many pitchers to mention) sometimes are the last piece to creating winners, but the Yankees won after Fat CC came on board, RedSocks won after bringing in Schilling. Damon was already on both squads. This isn’t “bashing” Damon; Boras started this, not bloggers.
Dave — I’ll sit on the porch with you and relive the double steal.

“He’s not complicated.”

This is the first time in my long memory that the Yankees have let a player find that other deal by the mysterious team bidding for his services.
Masturbatory Technique February 2, 2010 14:43
Damon is so good that his agent has resorted to telling teams Johnny wants to play for them. Looks like they don’t care about THE DOUBLE STEAL!!

I’m a professional web developer and also a homosexual. This site is laid out awfully. Do the new postings go in the carousel or under it? Very confusing and designed without usability in mind.
Charlie February 2, 2010 23:29
This post is BDDesque. There’s no reason to start trashing Damon now that he’s gone. He was gracious in his exit interview on WFAN. He was a solid player with some great moments that helped win a World Series. Sayanora, and I’ll cheer for you on Old Timer’s Day in a few years.

loki February 3, 2010 10:06
when will the noise about payroll end?
1. blame owners not yankees. do you blame other teams for not spending enough? red sox could always get a new stadium…all teams have choices to make. THIS IS A BUSINESS, THE OWNERS ARE NOT HERE TO WORK FOR YOU, IT IS LIP SERVICE WHEN THEY SAY THEY CARE ABOUT YOU. don’t ever forget that.
2. with all respect, new york is a different city than pittsburgh and has been a financial mecca for the life of this country, of course you make more money here. I feel for Kansas City, they don’t have a great economy but they get a nice check from the Yankees every year and I bet some of that cash went to making the additions to their stadium. What do the Marlins do with all of their luxury money? Oh yeah, they dont sign anyone and are building a new stadium. THE OWNERS DO NOT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT YOU.
3. admittedly the yankees won so often (does money always buy skill or clutch?) that their success has snowballed to where players want to come here for the prestige and of course the payday. See: Lakers, Celtics and now Pats, Red Wings.
4. if money buys championships where were we in the ’80′s? Where were we the last 9 years?
Jerry Randalls February 3, 2010 10:21
Grow up, Nomaas.

I want to thank loki for his (her?) comments.
So what if the comments are completely irrelevant to anything in this thread? Look at the use of CAPS LOCK! Admire the statements presented as fact without the slightest bit of concern for accuracy. Economics! Sociology! Baseball! Rhetorical Questions! Repetition! loki gave us everything he had. Thank you loki. Thank you very much.
loki February 3, 2010 13:42
hey suzyn
- loki is male
- payroll was mentioned in this thread a few days ago when Horenstein said that yankees practices were “unfair”
- caps are locked because i did get to that point where people expect fairness in business. I wish there could be.
- If you are referring to statements presented as facts with regards to new stadiums in Kansas City and Miami. I did not state that is where the money went, only that they chose to spend their money on building construction and apparently not team construction…although I don’t work in their front office and at the end of the day – don’t care.
I am a spoiled Yankee fan who has had 7 world series champs in his lifetime so whatever I say does come from a privileged vantage point.
I will be sure to stay within the thread next time.

LOL@ The Damon obsession.
BomberBanter.com February 4, 2010 10:51
It seems as though the Tigers are inclined to reduce payroll, not add to it, particularly due to the painful state of the Michigan economy. As payroll has been mentioned in this thread, whether off topic or on, I feel that there are many factors contributing to how much a team spends on payroll:
*Market – NYC teams are going to produce more revenue
*Ownership – some people are just cheap. I understand the Nats owners (Lerner family) are the richest owners in sports, followed by the Twins (in terms of total worth), but they are running a business and they want to stay profitable
*philosphy – as any Yankees fan can tell you, spending doesn’t equal championships unless you buy the right guys. Look what Tampa almost did in 08 with hardly any money and look what the Marlins have done TWICE.
*luxury tax – kansas seems to use this money for both Free agents and for stadium improvements – see their new video screen. does the video screen make the team better? probably not. does it draw fans? i’d have to say no, but does enhance the fan experience. should this money have went toward players instead of a screen? probably. remember tampa’s old owners? they used to pocket it and say they spent the money on stadium improvements that were, apparently, invisible.
anyway, i would say that teams like the Pirates and the Marlins that spend nothing on their teams are worse for baseball than a team like the Yankees that spends a ton. check out who leads road attendance and puts butts in the seats in all those other stadiums… its the yankees.
