It seems as though the Tigers are inclined to reduce payroll, not add to it, particularly due to the painful state of the Michigan economy. As payroll has been mentioned in this thread, whether off topic or on, I feel that there are many factors contributing to how much a team spends on payroll:

*Market - NYC teams are going to produce more revenue

*Ownership - some people are just cheap. I understand the Nats owners (Lerner family) are the richest owners in sports, followed by the Twins (in terms of total worth), but they are running a business and they want to stay profitable

*philosphy - as any Yankees fan can tell you, spending doesn't equal championships unless you buy the right guys. Look what Tampa almost did in 08 with hardly any money and look what the Marlins have done TWICE.

*luxury tax - kansas seems to use this money for both Free agents and for stadium improvements - see their new video screen. does the video screen make the team better? probably not. does it draw fans? i'd have to say no, but does enhance the fan experience. should this money have went toward players instead of a screen? probably. remember tampa's old owners? they used to pocket it and say they spent the money on stadium improvements that were, apparently, invisible.

anyway, i would say that teams like the Pirates and the Marlins that spend nothing on their teams are worse for baseball than a team like the Yankees that spends a ton. check out who leads road attendance and puts butts in the seats in all those other stadiums... its the yankees.

hey suzyn

- loki is male

- payroll was mentioned in this thread a few days ago when Horenstein said that yankees practices were "unfair"

- caps are locked because i did get to that point where people expect fairness in business. I wish there could be.

- If you are referring to statements presented as facts with regards to new stadiums in Kansas City and Miami. I did not state that is where the money went, only that they chose to spend their money on building construction and apparently not team construction...although I don't work in their front office and at the end of the day - don't care.

I am a spoiled Yankee fan who has had 7 world series champs in his lifetime so whatever I say does come from a privileged vantage point.

I will be sure to stay within the thread next time.

I want to thank loki for his (her?) comments.

So what if the comments are completely irrelevant to anything in this thread? Look at the use of CAPS LOCK! Admire the statements presented as fact without the slightest bit of concern for accuracy. Economics! Sociology! Baseball! Rhetorical Questions! Repetition! loki gave us everything he had. Thank you loki. Thank you very much.
