Thome_dont_play_that… I agree. I got bored after reading most of these msgs but i dont see Jeter not wanting to end his career with the Yanks and dont think he’ll ask for his just dues. He’s been the captain forever and brings good s*#t to the team besides on the field.

Kevin S., maybe not THE greatest, but certainly one of the greats. I am not sure if you watched Pete Rose play over his career, but the guy was one of the best players ever.

He has played well for a Yankee shortstop over the many years.

I’m saying that hit totals themselves are overrated. Does the fact that Pete Rose is the Hit King make him the greatest hitter ever?

So you’re saying guys like Pete Rose, Ty Cobb, Ichiro, etc are over rated? If you look at guys with 3,000 plus hits…I don’t think any are over rated.

A) Hits are an overrated measure of a player’s talent.

B) Jeter is overrated, by the people who act like he’s the second-greatest shortstop of all time. Just like he’s underrated by the people who think he’s a singles hitter who doesn’t belong in the Hall of Fame.

I have a feeling even if Jeter becomes the all time hit king there will still be people calling him “over rated”. It’s tough to find good a SS.

Fangraphs’ salary data is wrong, btw – he signed a $189 MM deal from ’01-’10, but according to what they have, he only makes a combined $13 million in ’01 and ’10? Using Cot’s Contracts for Jeter’s salary data brings it even closer into line.

HGH: Jeter IS overrated (in that he’s not a great fielder, his “clutchiness” doesn’t really exist, he can’t actually will his team to win just by his calming stare, etc). That doesn’t mean he isn’t very good. He’s a different kind of hitter than A-Rod and one who still has a lot of value because his bat plays so well at short. There aren’t many shortstops who can match his 121 career OPS+. In fact, for has long as Fan Graphs has data (dating back to 2002), Jeter leads all shortstops in career Wins Above Replacement. His production, in that time, has been worth roughly $145 million. Even though he was paid about $30 million more than that, I don’t think the Yanks overpaid him by that much because you have to assume he makes up the difference in merchandise and general fan appeal. And even without the New York market, I would bet that he would’ve made upwards of $10 million/year playing somewhere else; he just wouldn’t have made $25 million.

Jeter doesn’t want to play for anyone other than the yankees and the yankees want him to play. I am sure he will not ask for an unreasonable contact. Expect high end money that is probably more than he is worth in pure on the field production but he will make it up with all the intangibles. Plus don’t forgot the Yankees get a cut on all the number 2 jerseys he sells.
