This is a common insider problem. I read a NBA or MLB article on another site, like NoMaas or the Score, or Nets Daily, and than a week or so later the same article or idea is written about, but I paid money for this rehashing…
I prefer SI.com to ESPN.com. They’ve been integrating SABR stuff in their baseball coverage for a while and you don’t have to pay for it either.
I strongly encourage folks NOT to pay for this so called ‘insider’ content. It’s nonsense. save your money; that $40 could get you like 3 beers at a yankees game.
-Would love to see a team just come out and set a lineup based on career OBP (or in-season OBP) and see what happens. Get the guys who get on base the most PA’s, period.
Yankee PA’s per batting order spot last year:
1: 785 PA
2: 772 PA
3: 753 PA
4: 732 PA
5: 713 PA
6: 699 PA
7: 682 PA
8: 668 PA
9: 643 PA
Projected lineup based on career OBP:
1. 402 N Johnson
2. 390 A Rod
3. 388 D Jet
4. 379 J Posada
5. 378 M Tex
6. 357 N Swish
7. 344 C Granderson
8. 339 R Cano
9. 325 B Gardner
Of course, outside of Oakland, the idea of the fat guy leading off is ridiculed.
Ok, makes sense, if you have an ideal leadoff hitter on your team. But we don’t. Jeter? Great hitter.
But he steals a base about once a week.
More than most in this era; but setting up runs with the SB is not the Yankees’ game-plan.
Crawford, Reyes, Ellsbury – they are a threat to run Every Time they reach. Leadoff hitters.
We’ve got one guy on the roster – Brett the Jet – who could become that player, but he will not and should not sniff the top of the order until he proves himself.
Look, I would argue that setting the right lineup wins games not in innings 2-7, but in
1. Inning 1, because scoring first gives you a strategic and psychological advantage, and
2. Innings 8-9, when the top hitters get their 5th AB.
WHO gets that 5th AB is the difference.
If you don’t have that classic leadoff guy who is going to get to 2nd, fine.
Then lead off with the player with highest OBP,
followed by the player with the highest SLG.
Get on base, drive him in.
Or, let Nick get on base, PINCH RUN FOR HIM, and then let A Rod drive the runner home.
(Wouldn’t it be great to have the player with the .400 OBP also steal 90 bases?! Alas, that player is current 51 years-old and, i am almost ready to admit, possibly retired.)
This is always the problem I had with ESPN Insider. Why pay for the same analysis I can get from here or another free site?
I like Steve Balboni for the 4th spot.
Paying for ESPN Insider is like paying for the NY Times. Waste of money!
Shouldn’t the money go to Tango?
Do you have any idea how much butternut squash you can buy with $40.00 in season? In season, I cannot give the stuff away. Your offices are not big enough.
Have you guys ever played Baseball in your lives?..There is so much more to the game than OBS when it comes to a line up…speed..situational hitting..how well they hit pitchers from the stretch or the wind-up..basepath instincts..patience at the plate..ability to hit the ball the other way..so much more
So stop being nerds and coming up with line ups or a players value bases on stats…you dont know what your talking about!!!!
OBP
I love me some “OBS.”
