Looks good so far I suppose… let’s see where he is in June/July…

What a waste. I’m glad we are wasting a capable starter for the future so we can have a 3rd or 4th bull pen guy. He should be in Scranton. Actually, he should’ve been there since LAST August…

Hello? Brian Cashman? ugh… really? HOF career and you want me to give peptalks every night to a dude that looks like the bulldog from the Tom & Jerry Cartoons? Well okay… its better than sitting between Nomar and Kruk.

  4. Joe from SI says:

His value is being a starter. It was a waste of 3 years for him to be the set up man. Set up men grow on trees and are easily replaceable…

In the future, at least include how many FB thrown out of total pitches:

    4-4 / 92.36 / 95.6 / 9 of 22
    4-6 / 95.12 / 96.4 / 5 of 9
    4-11 / 93.47 / 95.1 / 18 of 27
    4-14 / 92.65 / 94.7 / 8 of 9

Stupid fucking Michael Kay can’t stop pinching his helmet in anticipation for the radar gun readout.

Honestly, I don’t give a fuck if he can throw hard.
Commanding the zone is most important.

Farnsworth and Veras can throw 9001 MPH for all I care. They suck a variety of dick.

  7. RollingWave says:

he use to sit 95+ before his injury in 08, on average, and maxed out at 99-100 all the time.

this isn’t a good sign at all.

  8. Duncan Meyer says:

I’m with RollingWave. This isn’t exactly good news. In ’08 he was arguably the best starter in the league. In ’10 he may not be the 3rd best reliever. Something changed pretty seriously and nobody in Yankeeland is talking about it.

Velocity is nice and sexy but command and movement are where the money is.

Let’s add %in strike zone and %swung at (and missed).

Umm, arguably the best starter in the league?

No pun intended but what are you smoking?

  12. Stephen says:

Maybe he’s taking advice from Rick Vaughn…trying not to blow his arm out throwing 100 MPH fastballs, instead he’s throwing junk like the masterbater.

  13. Greg Oden's Long Penis says:

For everyone talking about command, that’s true. But when Joba came into the league, his fastball averaged 97. Ninety-freakin’ seven. There’s been a big dropoff.

  14. Yonkees says:

Give him a month or two to build the arm up. It’s a good sign right now to see him hitting 96 at least. While set-up men grow on trees, lock-down closers do not. Usually all the best closers started as setup men, and if Joba can take that role full time after Mo retires and we have confidence in him to do it, that would be awesome.

AndyH — Smoking? I’m just looking at the month of starts after he was stretched out and before his injury in 2008. That month and change of starts was exactly the scouting report we had heard, and he looked like a bona fide #1. Since that injury he hasn’t been close to the same. His velocity is a symptom of a problem that, IMO us fans haven’t been told much about. He has looked about as crappy in the pen so far (SSS I am aware) as he did last year in the rotation.

Note June 13 through the start he was injured in. Guy was pitching deep into games, throwing 95+ gas late into games and striking out the world… as a starter.

I don’t know if its an injury that we haven’t been told about or if its the change in his arm angle/ slot but theres been a huge change in both his FB velocity and slider movement and velocity also.

I don’t know if it was all the Joba Rules and telling him to do everything in the world not to get hurt or how the Yanks are telling him how to pitch or what, but he’s not the same guy as he was before the injury. Its a shame because whatever has changed has caused him to go from a legit 1 type starter to someone who looks like he destined to be a reliever. If something doesn’t change soon they should put him in the aaa rotation, let him work on his change up, curveball and command as a starter then trade him. He still has huge value as a starter to alot of teams might not be with the Yanks but relievers are a dime a dozen and we could get some very nice prospect in return for him if he put up good numbers as a starter again

  19. Butcher says:

I agree he hasn’t been the same since he first came up. Even his attitude seems different. You can tell he’s not as confident out there.

That being said I think his stuff now works better as a starter. I kind of wish they went with him and Hughes for 4-5 this year.

I don’t know what’s ahead for Joba, but he seems to be fading out.

  20. Ari says:

He seems to be fading out cause the team has screwed him and continues to do so. I’m fine with Hughes as the fifth starter, especially after last night. And turning Melky into Javy is still just straight sexy, even with Javy’s early troubles. But Joba should be a starter. Even if he can’t hit 100 mph anymore who cares? The guy has four pitches and was never going to have that kind of velocity as a starter anyways. His slider still looks filthy to me, and his curve is underrated in my opinion. All he really lacks is command and confidence. They should never have rushed him to the majors in the first place, and once they did they shouldn’t have kept him there. The guy just has never had a chance to learn how to pitch. They should send him down to AAA to work primarily on command (and maybe a little on the change). He’ll probably dominate AAA hitters, but the point is to get him to control his pitches and have confidence throwing them for strikes. Maybe some protracted dominance as a starter would do him some good.

  21. Jimbear says:

Unfortunately Joba maybe one of those pitchers that end up like shooting stars. They show up with explosive an fastball and equally lousy mechanics. He also looks like he’s adopted the diet of a young Babe Ruth. Being treated like a delicate little flower by the Yankee brain trust while being jerked around hasn’t helped.
Yankees development plan for pitchers is a joke. I’ll take the Atlanta Braves or old Met Rube Walker approach of having them throw a lot to develop arm strength and work deeper into games.

  22. hogan says:

If you look at his velocity in relief appearnces in September of 2008 AFTER his shoulder injury in August, 2008 he was hitting 97.

I’m not sure that injury is to blame for the lower velocity we saw in 2009 and currently. It’s certainly possible but you have to give CHANGE OF DELIVERY and STEROIDS a seat at the table.

If it’s delivery then FUCK DAVE EILAND and maybe Joba needs to tell him to fuck off.

joba chose meatballs over fastballs..now he can’t get his body moving properly to get back to 97…he is a fat slob..keep drinking your red bull..that makes you a more awake gas can for the opposition…dump him before he blows important games later..
