Randy Winn: Bad idea from the start

Goodbye to Randy Winn and his .261 wOBA. Thanks for the two months of replacement level play, Randy.
While we endorsed Brian Cashman's major moves of the offseason, one of the areas that we strongly disagreed was the bench construction. The Winn signing in particular didn't make sense because -- a) He didn't fill a need. b) There were better options available.
Meanwhile, our top offseason bench target, Reed Johnson, is tearing up LHP with a .341/.383/.500 line and playing excellent defense in the corner OF spots.

hello nommas, Randy Winn DFA’d before july, yes or no?
Nomaas: no, they are sticking with winn the whole year

Could not have agreed more. Everytime I saw a Reed Johnson highlite this past month I shed tears.
They picked Marcus Thames (not Randy Winn) over Reed Johnson as their big bat against LHP. They picked correctly.
Didn’t Cashman say that Reed Johnson’s medical records factored into the decision not to sign him? Plus, Eric Hinske wanted more playing time so he sign with the Braves, in case you brought that idea up.
Cashman can’t use medical records as an excuse anymore. Signing AJ and bringing back Johnson.
Ah, so that’s why we let Hinske go. I mean…I guess you can’t fault him for wanting to be more than a bench player.
Okay…but Marcus Thames is the guy the Yankees got to hit lefties, not Randy Winn. And Thames is hitting .375/.487/.563 against lefties. There were other options besides Winn and he might not have been the best choice, but claiming it was wrong because Reed Johnson is hitting lefties good is pretty much nonsensical when that’s not Winn’s purpose. In fact Winn was here more to hit righties, since Thames got most starts against lefties over him until the outfield got so decimated they were starting both.
Also what do either of those guys have to do with medical records? I don’t recall if that was a factor or not, but looking at someone’s immediate medical records and seeing an immediate concern is not even remotely close to “injury prone in the past”. And while Nick unfortunately did get hurt, AJ threw over 200 innings last year (even before the playoffs) and hasn’t missed a start yet this year. Add to that over 220 innings with Toronto in 2008, and I’m not sure why you’d be complaining about AJ and medical records.

Dot – Why not? His medical records played a part in passing on him. Seems plausible to me.
But I can’t hit without facial hair, look at my career. Always hit better when hairy so Yankees wouldn’t have been good for me. Plus you already have the gutty gritty taken care of with gardner.
I fail to see why infernus gets a point when you asked a yes or no question without stating your own opinion…
Still anxiously awaiting nomaas’ mea culpa re: unwarranted enthusiasm for Nick the Sick and Javy.
They already did one on Nick Johnson, douchebag. What’s funny is that you probably wrote that and thought you were badass.
