A look at the defense, v2

Quick Analytical Blurbs

In this feature, we examine how each Yankee is tracking defensively for the season, according to UZR/150. UZR/150 measures how many runs above or below average a fielder would be at that position over the course of 150 games.

Gardner being negative is certainly surprising, and Tex being negative will likely cause another stir. Don't kill the messenger. Cano's surge into positive terrain supports the defensive improvements many have been claiming, however he is getting dinged on range. Yankees as a team are tracking at +1.1 UZR/150.

And for comparison purposes, here's how the defense looked on May 22nd:

So – Gardner is an above average CF and a below average LF – one of those will regress to the mean, and I’m betting it’s the LF number ..

Gardner is in the negative because Marcus Thames infected that position.

The reason my UZR is negative is becuase I have been working rigorously to catch than pass Juan Miranda offensively, and guess what….I did

If the average of the above players is 4.53, why is the team only at 1.1?

UZR and UZR/150 are not the only worth while defensive stats.

TotalZone is also a good metric. Just because the nomaas hating Baseball-reference guys use Rtz,Rtot,Rtot/yr and the virgins at fangraphs use UZR, UZR/150 does not mean UZR is a better metric. Also TotalZone for catchers is significantly better than UZR for catchers.
