VOTE: “He’ll win a batting title someday”

As long as there has been baseball, there have been broadcasters who say Robinson Cano will win a batting title someday, referring to him like he is a 22-year old prospect making his debut.

Well, after going 1-3 on Thursday and extending his hitting streak to 17 games, Robinson Cano is hitting .373/.414/.632. His batting average is tops in the AL and is .001 ahead of Justin Morneau as of this post.

Considering he still swings at everything, has a career BB% of 4.4%, and currently has a BABIP of .379 -- we ask, is this the year the perpetual prediction becomes reality? Vote and then tell us why or why not.

Tim McCarver Robinson Cano
Could he be right?

Probably not since everyone keeps mentioning how he will. I wonder if 10 years from now if McCarver and Buck or who ever for that matter will still be saying the same thing. Boston still sucks, that is all.

  6. Arnold says:

I voted yes. Obviously, he’s not going to keep up the current pace and that BABIP is not sustainable…but even with a correction, I could see him around .340 by the end of the year. That could do it.

  7. Pete Gammons says:

Cano’s lazy .340 in the wiffleball park cannot compare to the hard playing Pedroia’s .257 in the Nation.

Pedroia sets goals for himself and gets his jersey dirty like every good hard working ballplayer should.

  8. Kevin S. says:

Yeah, the BABIP is a little high (he’s outperforming both his career BABIP and his xBABIP by 50-60 points), but Morneau’s is even flukier (differential is well over 100), and he’s got a sizable lead on Big Fat Miguel Cabrera. It would seem this is the year.

  9. Arnold says:

The only thing that I could see Morneau having an advantage is his plate discipline. He’s walking A LOT more this season, and swings at a lot less outside the strike zone. A prolonged slump could really hurt Cano, because he won’t be walking and could be swinging at garbage.

You know Robinson Cano really doesn’t remind me of how good I was as a ball player. I would have out hit and fielded Robinson Cano on his best day. My big red machine was far superior to this, or any other Yankee team.

So will Robinson Cano win a batting title? It’s not really important because I am a hall of fame legend.

Whether he wins a batting title or not he has already been in the top 10 2x and looks like he will be there in the top 3 this year. He will also be in the top 3 for MVP talk. Add in his defense this year and he could easily win a batting title and MVP this year.

  40. Joe Morgan says:

Matt I’m glad you brought that up because I was both consistent and patient. My big red machine was so consitent we were the greatest team of all time. I’m so patient that I’d turn a double play better than Cano or any other second baseman of this or any other generation.

Did I mention my hall of fame legend status?

    Wow. Batting average?
We’re still talking about batting average?

    That’s good.
I was worried that my stat nerdiness had become totally outdated with all this WAR and RE24 and shit.

Anyway, not this year. Ichiro only has two of them, and he’s drawing more walks this year. Robbie will win one with 504 plate appearances in an injury-shortened year at age 34.

  45. Serious Poster says:

This is a strange post considering he has a career batting average of .311. He’s part of a small group of players you can be reasonably confident will have a good batting average most years since he makes such good contact. During a great year, you’d think he has what it takes to compete for a batting title. Really, the thing that coaches and scouts and broadcasters have been saying every year about him that seems more like wishcasting is that he’ll become a power hitter who will 30-35 homers each year. It hasn’t happened yet, although he’s on pace for those numbers this season. But what’s the point of being snarky about Cano? Or am I imagining there is snark in this post?
