Ask Kuato: Should the Yankees trade for Ty Wigginton?
Friday, July 9, 2010 at 12:41 am by Vizzini

Brian Cashman recently stated that his biggest priority, as the trade deadline approaches, is to improve the bench. One name being mentioned is Ty Wigginton. Seeking the best counsel possible, we consulted Kuato and asked him to lay some wisdom on us. Here's what he said:
This makes some sense, as Wigginton has played all over the diamond. Batwise, he seems duplicative- he's a righty hitter with similar overall numbers and splits as Marcus Thames. I suppose if you want to add another Marcus Thames to the bench, then fine. There's some real crap there right now. But there is reportedly competition for his services, and it doesn't make sense to give up anything of real value in order to marginally improve your pinch hitting. Free Mars.
In the meantime, with Nick Johnson looking like he's never coming back, our Adam LaRoche idea is making more and more sense.

present bench blows. time to make some changes.
I would be an outstanding member of this bench. Whats NOMAAS without MAAS BITCHES? Nothing…nothing at all…FUCK MATTINGLY!
Get Delgado instead of LaRoche. Wouldn’t have to give up anything for him.
Also why hasn’t David DeJesus been mentioned? They could move him to RF and have Swish as the everyday DH. Optimal lineup and OF defense right there.
“Also why hasn’t David DeJesus been mentioned?”
DeJesus would probably be prohibitively expensive given his projected Type-A status and career year. The Royals would be looking for a lot.
What, I don’t rule enough for you? MAY YOU BE DANMNED!! Steve Farr fucked. Enjoy the palmball bitches!
I think Delgado may not be the best one around. He’s FA, but he’s probably in worse shape than LaRoche. In fact, Jason Giambi may be a better choice than Delgado. (Then again it’s 50/50 how Delgado does, if signed.) I’d rather see a return of Eric Hinske or Jerry Hairston Jr. than Wigginton. Hinske and Hairston Jr. would probably cost way less than Wigginton, who’s one of the bright spots for Baltimore this year. Heck, if I was Cashman, I’d get someone cheap and FA at the end of the year, then go for Crawford and send Swisher DHing. (However, fans will miss his Swish Salutes, and he would get a bit bored and less energized)
However, I think that the bullpen is a bigger worry. I wonder how much would the Royals want for Farnsworth? He was never great, and never will be, but probably would be a valued member in NYY bullpen.
Another idea to kick around is Derrek Lee.
According to this http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/07/cubs-looking-to-move-cumbersome-salaries.html he can be had for cost.
He is hitting below his career numbers but the dude is a masher. Imaging pitching through a lineup that has Derrek Lee hitting in the 7-8-9 spot?!
He wouldnt be much defensive help but he could give Tex the occasional day off and could DH. It would also be a good reason to get rid of Thames who offers nothing at all defensively.
I like Wiggy. He can play the entire infield and he’s an upgrade over Pena by a lot. No knock on Pena but Wiggy can at least put one or 2 out. I like Pena but he has no bat really. But still, we’re in 1st!!!!
In regards to J-Hair and Hinske… Their teams are both in 1st place in their respective divisions
Lets trade for somebody named CLIFF LEE !
Who cares about the bench? I am coming. Game over.
I want to come over too.
Kuato reference……..AMAZING
Can I leave Baltimore yet???
I’d like to see Ty Bummington. Get it? hehe!
GET THE HELL OUT CLIFF LEE! I don’t care if Austin Romine and Gary Sanchez ends up hitting like Mike Piazza and catching like Johnny Bench. Montero is still a potentially dangerous bat. Worst thing can happen is he hits like Mike Lieberthal and plays defense like Mike Piazza.
Am I high on angel dust, or did someone on here seriously suggest that we bring Kyle Farnsworth back?
Farnsworth was actually pitching well before he was traded to kc
I know that Farnsworth has been lucky as he has much lower BABIP and HR/FB this year but he has also become a pitcher instead of a thrower. Armed with a cutter and change-up, he doesn’t have to pitch FB/SL all the time now. Besides, he was good before he came to New York, he was at least usable in New York, and this season he seems to be okay. Probably pitched better than Chan-Ho Park, to say the least.
Just bring up Miranda for Pete’s sake.
Miranda sucks.
don’t understand the comment about Thames in reference to Wigginton.
Wigginton’s value is his ability to play 3B/2B/1B. if Thames could play those positions, he’d be an excellent bench player.
the Yankees want a player to back up A-Rod who can hit more than Pena.
at the right price, Wigginton would be a fine acquisition. given the Orioles longstanding policy of not trading with the yanks, i doubt he will come cheap though.
Chad Tracy/Juan Miranda > Kevin Russo/Colin Curtis
The Yankees need bench help. Last year, at this point they would have called up Shelley Duncan. Then, as now, many teams are looking for a bat without giving up too much. I have never understood why this guy can’t find regular work. Duncan can hit and makes a fraction of what many of the other players being discussed do. Sure, he is an average fielder at best and strikes out a bit too much. But again, he has shown major league “pop” and could be had much cheaper than many, many other veteran players.
God I want to go surfing again soon!
