Joe, there’s one thing we want you to do for us…

The All-Star Game is an exhibition. Much pomp and circumstance surrounds the proceedings, and a good dose of politics are involved in a manager's roster choices.
Despite its Hollywood nature, the game has real world consequences. Since 2003, MLB has awarded home field advantage in the World Series to the league winner. It's a jarringly stupid rule, but it's the law according to Selig. Before Game 1 of the World Series is even played, one team will be arbitrarily granted a 5-10% boost to its win probabilities.
This is no small potatoes. The Yankees are the most likely team to emerge from the ALCS. For Girardi, winning the ASG is roughly the equivalent of taking the opposing team's two best players off the field in a potential Game 7.
ASG managers are always concerned about using their players diplomatically. They don't want to upset other teams by overusing their pitchers in an exhibition, and they want to give everyone a chance to get in the game.
Considering the postseason impact of the game result, Girardi should break with convention, and utilize his best players as much as possible. If pinch hitting ARod against a lefty pitcher gives you a matchup advantage, go ahead and live a little. And don't even think about putting John Buck or Ty Wigginton out there.
Girardi will raise the ire of his colleagues by doing this, and he'll have the mediots whipped up in a frenzy. However, this is the rule Major League Baseball has settled on, and Joe needs to be aware that his Yankees could be significantly affected by it.

If that doesn’t work, I suggest just throwing Price or Lester out there to pitch until their arms fall off.
maybe if my league’s player union had their league by the balls like MLBPA, i’d be Greedy in the Big Apple instead of Coward in South Beach.
also, i’m a big fan of John Buck and hope he gets into the game.
“Before Game 1 of the World Series is even played, one team will be arbitrarily granted a 5-10% boost to its win probabilities.”
You mean, how is was done for 100 years prior?
BTW, Girardi has already stated he’s managing the game to win.
“mediots”–I like that a lot. Agree with your whole position, too. The game’s a fucking farce, but it needs to be treated like it determines home-field advantage in the World Series because it does.
I know you love you’re sabie metries but in a all star game I would agree with Terry Steinbach and call it a crap shoot.
Under old format AL gets home field this year. So Joe actually does need to win this game.
All I know is that the AL better win, I’ve got money riding on it!!!
So do I.
I’ll be asleep by 11pm. Which will be around the bottom of the second inning.
First Arnold, now Stallone…f’ing incredible.
Great post too. Why home field can’t go to the team with the best record is nuts.
Joe please take the Cubs job next season

72 virgins. Welcome George. I tell truth. Be happy.
Nice job leaving Arod on the bench. Enjoyed watching Kinsler bat and Ortiz run the bases.
