We know you’ve been struggling, Phil. Here’s three pieces of advice that have gotten us through hard times.
1. We’re not indestructible.
2. Some things are worth fighting for.
3. There’s no shortcut home.

We know you can do it.

A little Rocky IV action I presume. Mix up your pitch selection Phil. Anyone realize in the 1st, he threw nothing but fastballs? 4 seamers? Get a feel for your offspeed stuff. Geesh. He’s gonna be good, i think we all see that, but the rest of the season with him is gonna be a crapshoot till he gets a feel for the mental aspects of pitching.
Copernicus July 21, 2010 00:19
Fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball…
Try throwing other pitches, Phil.
Robocop July 21, 2010 02:27
When is NoMaas going to start calling out how awful Granderson has been?
Random Sports Guy July 21, 2010 05:50
Phil definitely has been struggling of late. They need to turn this kid around. We’re depending on that right arm of his for the next month until Pettitte gets back. God knows Burnett can’t be counted on.
JoeThunder July 21, 2010 06:28
Let’s trade Phil to Philly for Jamie Moyer.
Grandma Mass July 21, 2010 07:40
Yes, I noticed he was very calm. Must have thought he was back at triple A level and didn’t need anything but fastballs. What I want to know is why nobody else on the team, including the manager, pitching coach and catcher, noticed it ?
CB14 July 21, 2010 08:05
Uh when is nomaas going to call out their hero Brian Cashman. Chan Ho cannot keep it in the Park, and Granderson have been pathetic. Not resigning Hinske, Damon, Matsui or Hairston Jr. Randy Winn and Marcus Thames? What the hell, did he go to theo Esptein’s school of how to be cheap and impress faggy new wave GM’s?
Curtis Granderson July 21, 2010 08:17
Yall niggas traded some serious talent for my ass. I can’t hit water if I fell outsa boat.
Lionel Richie July 21, 2010 08:18
Dare I say put Mr. Hughes back in the pen? I really think with him getting closer to his innings cap and our BP struggling it should be considered.
I just don’t think he’ll be effective rest of the year as a starter.
Your friend,
-Lionel.

One of the greatest photoshops and posts of all-time…and you bitches are calling out NoMaas. Go f yourselves.
Rich Mahogany July 21, 2010 08:45
CB14,
How many times do we have to see this idiotic comment or something like it?
Stats below are as of Tuesday.
Hinske: 276/.337/.479. Stated that he wanted to play for a team that would let him start, which did not include the Yankees.
Hairston: .251/.307/.361 (89 OPS+), gets to start for the Padres. Move along, nothing to see here.
Damon: .277/.369/.421; good OBP but no power. He obviously can’t play CF anymore, so where would we use him? Are you really saying that Damon should be our LF over Gardner?
Matsui: .249/.330/.401 (yes, I realize he went yard yesterday), good for -0.1 WAR thanks to his total lack of defensive value. He is not a good player anymore.
Thames: .287/.396/.437, with a .417 OBP against LHP. His sole purpose on the team is to hit lefties and he does that.
Yes, Park is bad and Winn sucked, but both are cheap, one-year deals.
Granderson has disappointed so far, but it’s only been half a season and he is still a 1.0 WAR player because of his defense.
You do know that there are free websites where you can look up these stats and contracts, right?
Mick Jagger July 21, 2010 08:54
@Rich Mahogany
100% correct. ppl seem to forget how the off-season REALLY went (Damon wanted “Abreu Money” even though he offers less power and limited defensive value, Hinske & Hairston wanted starting roles that they would not get here, Matsui’s knees making coffee bean grinder noises by contract’s end)…
for those of you who don’t realize that real baseball is NOT like “MLB 10- The Show”,you have to realize that sometimes you can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you might get what you need…
CB14 July 21, 2010 09:01
Uh Geniuses, If you think Damon and Matsui’s numbers wouldn’t be drastically different in this lineup you must be smoking the same chronic that Cashman is. Hinske platoons in Atlanta, while in Philly for a recent series he sat the bench and played the Outfield and Pinch hit. Hairston wanted to go home understood, but don’t act like Cashman didn’t pick a fight with Boras and tried to play tough guy GM.
It is amazing how for years this site used to criticize the way the bench was constructed and now it appears that all people want to do is come up with excuses for the GM.
Columbian Drug Lord July 21, 2010 09:17
CB14, Nomaas ran a bunch of articles at the beginning of the season criticizing the bench.
apollo creed July 21, 2010 09:18
BE MORE MAN THAN HIM! Eye of the tiger phil, eye of the tiger!!! Oh wait. Crap this is rocky IV, I died. Nevermind.
Some guy July 21, 2010 09:19
I see that people are complaining about his pitch selection in the first inning. Typically, as a pitcher, you try to use as little of a variety of pitches the first time through the lineup as possible. It’s a bad move to give hitters a look at everything you’ve got the first time through the order. You want to get them out with 2, maybe 3 different pitches so when that 2nd and possibly 3rd trip through the lineup comes around, you’ve still got pitches in your arsenal that they haven’t seen much of, giving the pitcher an advantage. It could be a confidence thing with him and as a pitcher you have to establish your fastball but what he did is typical among pitchers at any level.
CB14 July 21, 2010 09:28
Face it, Cashman dropped the ball not trading for Lee. Also, could have had Beltre – whose ripping it up for the Sox, and Vlad. Coz Nick Johnson worked out so well.
If he was really serious, get Strasberg and dump joba. Stras would dominate the 8th which Joba has utterly failed to do so.
SOTHPAW July 21, 2010 09:30
Some feelings never die!! I’m not asking for another chance, I just wanna know why!!
Col. John Matrix July 21, 2010 09:39
Oh, I get it CB14. You are just being goofy. For a second there, I thought you were SERIOUS!
Rich Mahogany July 21, 2010 09:45
CB14,
Right, Damon and Matsui would suddenly become feared power hitters if they were in the Yankees’ lineup. In fact, they would be so inspired that Damon would steal 50 bases and Matsui would become a Gold Glove OF. You are being ridiculous. Damon and Matsui got old fast.
Hinske went to Atlanta because he had a shot at a starting job there. He said this. He platoons now because he’s not a good enough hitter to do otherwise.
I can’t believe you are actually upset that we didn’t re-sign Hairston. What’s so good about him?
The fake CB14 at least has one thing right. If you want to complain, at least say we should have got Vlad. Stop wasting everyone’s time whining about players who we should be happy we don’t have.
CB14 July 21, 2010 09:56
Uh Whoever is pretending to be me needs to get help or get out of mom’s basement. I have an idea why don’t we pick Ollie Perez for long relief and see if the Padres will give up Adrian Gonzalez for the DH spot.
CB14 July 21, 2010 10:17
And another thing, why didnt your beloved Cashman trade for Tim Lincecum!!!
Joe Morgan July 21, 2010 11:45
I thought this was a scene from Eddie and The Cruisers.
Michael Kay July 21, 2010 11:56
Anyone catch my commentary about the 1980s Celtics last night?
CB14 July 21, 2010 13:12
I wanna hook up with Michael Kay and Al Gore at the same time.
CB14 July 21, 2010 13:42
Actually I wanna hook with the fag pretending to be me so I can slit his throat & watch him bleed to death.. E-THUG.
CT Yank July 21, 2010 13:44
Rich Mahogany — Hinske signed with the Braves as their 4th OF…they already traded for Melky, had Heyward and Jones.
Hairston was the PERFECT bench player. Could have signed him for 500k more than SD offered.
Gardner has been just terrible this month and NEVER steals on the first pitch/second pitch and is the #9 hitter on this team (Damon fit nicely in the 2 hole)
Are you really arguing saying Nick Johnson was a better signing than resigning Matsui??????
Some of Cashman’s moves and decisions this offseason were just fucking terrible.
They better have my comic books July 21, 2010 13:50
CTYank — how can you seriously bash Gardner? He’s been one of the best players on the team this year.
CT Yank July 21, 2010 15:20
Brett Gardner is fucking terrible. For LF’s that dont hit homers and drive in runs they should pay their way into the park. Its embarrassing that he’s on this team.
They better have my comic books July 21, 2010 15:24
Wow, you’re clueless.
Rich Mahogany July 21, 2010 15:35
CT Yank,
When the season began, no one, including Hinske, knew that Heyward would be an everyday player/superstar in the making. He is 20. Hinske thought he had a better chance of starting for the Braves than the Yankees. This isn’t speculation, he said this.
A guy who has a OBP around .300 and no power is not the PERFECT bench player no matter how many CAPITAL LETTERS you use. We can get the same kind of production from virtually anyone else.
I am not saying that Nick Johnson was a better signing than Matsui, which you can tell from the fact that nowhere in my comments did I write about Nick Johnson. It turns out that both Johnson and Matsui were bad signings. If you want to use a time machine here, complain that we should have signed Vlad.
Brett Gardner is a 3.4 WAR player.
You are brain dead.
Enough Stats already July 21, 2010 15:47
WAR SHMAR CZAR PAR! dont use that WAR crap! if he you need a stat to tell you 18 hrs and 75 runs batted in arent enough for a Shorstop then you shouldnt even call yourself a FAN! stop watching the game wihta your dick in your hand1
CT Yank July 21, 2010 15:55
Colin Curtis just made my point. Enough said.
Rich Mahogany July 21, 2010 16:02
You foamed at the mouth about our lack of a bench. Curtis came off the bench to hit a critical home run. Then you say that he proved your point, I guess because he pinch hit for Gardner. My God you are stupid.
Frank Ueno July 21, 2010 16:11
And Gardner was ejected, that’s why Curtis hit.
I honestly want to fight CT Yank
JoeThunder July 21, 2010 18:01
To CB14: they destroyed my name for voicing an opinion so in all likelihood expect it to happen to yours. That’s what 30 year old fat kids living in their mom’s basements do for fun.
