We know you've been struggling, Phil. Here's three pieces of advice that have gotten us through hard times.

1. We're not indestructible.
2. Some things are worth fighting for.
3. There's no shortcut home.

We know you can do it.

A little Rocky IV action I presume. Mix up your pitch selection Phil. Anyone realize in the 1st, he threw nothing but fastballs? 4 seamers? Get a feel for your offspeed stuff. Geesh. He’s gonna be good, i think we all see that, but the rest of the season with him is gonna be a crapshoot till he gets a feel for the mental aspects of pitching.

Fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball…

    Try throwing other pitches, Phil.

Phil definitely has been struggling of late. They need to turn this kid around. We’re depending on that right arm of his for the next month until Pettitte gets back. God knows Burnett can’t be counted on.

Let’s trade Phil to Philly for Jamie Moyer.

Yes, I noticed he was very calm. Must have thought he was back at triple A level and didn’t need anything but fastballs. What I want to know is why nobody else on the team, including the manager, pitching coach and catcher, noticed it ?

  7. CB14 says:

Uh when is nomaas going to call out their hero Brian Cashman. Chan Ho cannot keep it in the Park, and Granderson have been pathetic. Not resigning Hinske, Damon, Matsui or Hairston Jr. Randy Winn and Marcus Thames? What the hell, did he go to theo Esptein’s school of how to be cheap and impress faggy new wave GM’s?

Dare I say put Mr. Hughes back in the pen? I really think with him getting closer to his innings cap and our BP struggling it should be considered.

I just don’t think he’ll be effective rest of the year as a starter.

    Your friend,

  11. Rich Mahogany says:

    CB14,

How many times do we have to see this idiotic comment or something like it?

Stats below are as of Tuesday.

Hinske: 276/.337/.479. Stated that he wanted to play for a team that would let him start, which did not include the Yankees.

Hairston: .251/.307/.361 (89 OPS+), gets to start for the Padres. Move along, nothing to see here.

Damon: .277/.369/.421; good OBP but no power. He obviously can’t play CF anymore, so where would we use him? Are you really saying that Damon should be our LF over Gardner?

Matsui: .249/.330/.401 (yes, I realize he went yard yesterday), good for -0.1 WAR thanks to his total lack of defensive value. He is not a good player anymore.

Thames: .287/.396/.437, with a .417 OBP against LHP. His sole purpose on the team is to hit lefties and he does that.

Yes, Park is bad and Winn sucked, but both are cheap, one-year deals.

Granderson has disappointed so far, but it’s only been half a season and he is still a 1.0 WAR player because of his defense.

You do know that there are free websites where you can look up these stats and contracts, right?

  12. Mick Jagger says:

    @Rich Mahogany

100% correct. ppl seem to forget how the off-season REALLY went (Damon wanted “Abreu Money” even though he offers less power and limited defensive value, Hinske & Hairston wanted starting roles that they would not get here, Matsui’s knees making coffee bean grinder noises by contract’s end)…

for those of you who don’t realize that real baseball is NOT like “MLB 10- The Show”,you have to realize that sometimes you can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you might get what you need…

  13. CB14 says:

Uh Geniuses, If you think Damon and Matsui’s numbers wouldn’t be drastically different in this lineup you must be smoking the same chronic that Cashman is. Hinske platoons in Atlanta, while in Philly for a recent series he sat the bench and played the Outfield and Pinch hit. Hairston wanted to go home understood, but don’t act like Cashman didn’t pick a fight with Boras and tried to play tough guy GM.
It is amazing how for years this site used to criticize the way the bench was constructed and now it appears that all people want to do is come up with excuses for the GM.

  16. Some guy says:

I see that people are complaining about his pitch selection in the first inning. Typically, as a pitcher, you try to use as little of a variety of pitches the first time through the lineup as possible. It’s a bad move to give hitters a look at everything you’ve got the first time through the order. You want to get them out with 2, maybe 3 different pitches so when that 2nd and possibly 3rd trip through the lineup comes around, you’ve still got pitches in your arsenal that they haven’t seen much of, giving the pitcher an advantage. It could be a confidence thing with him and as a pitcher you have to establish your fastball but what he did is typical among pitchers at any level.

  17. CB14 says:

Face it, Cashman dropped the ball not trading for Lee. Also, could have had Beltre – whose ripping it up for the Sox, and Vlad. Coz Nick Johnson worked out so well.

If he was really serious, get Strasberg and dump joba. Stras would dominate the 8th which Joba has utterly failed to do so.

  20. Rich Mahogany says:

    CB14,

Right, Damon and Matsui would suddenly become feared power hitters if they were in the Yankees’ lineup. In fact, they would be so inspired that Damon would steal 50 bases and Matsui would become a Gold Glove OF. You are being ridiculous. Damon and Matsui got old fast.

Hinske went to Atlanta because he had a shot at a starting job there. He said this. He platoons now because he’s not a good enough hitter to do otherwise.

I can’t believe you are actually upset that we didn’t re-sign Hairston. What’s so good about him?

The fake CB14 at least has one thing right. If you want to complain, at least say we should have got Vlad. Stop wasting everyone’s time whining about players who we should be happy we don’t have.

  27. CT Yank says:

Rich Mahogany — Hinske signed with the Braves as their 4th OF…they already traded for Melky, had Heyward and Jones.

Hairston was the PERFECT bench player. Could have signed him for 500k more than SD offered.

Gardner has been just terrible this month and NEVER steals on the first pitch/second pitch and is the #9 hitter on this team (Damon fit nicely in the 2 hole)

Are you really arguing saying Nick Johnson was a better signing than resigning Matsui??????

Some of Cashman’s moves and decisions this offseason were just fucking terrible.

Brett Gardner is fucking terrible. For LF’s that dont hit homers and drive in runs they should pay their way into the park. Its embarrassing that he’s on this team.

  31. Rich Mahogany says:

    CT Yank,

When the season began, no one, including Hinske, knew that Heyward would be an everyday player/superstar in the making. He is 20. Hinske thought he had a better chance of starting for the Braves than the Yankees. This isn’t speculation, he said this.

A guy who has a OBP around .300 and no power is not the PERFECT bench player no matter how many CAPITAL LETTERS you use. We can get the same kind of production from virtually anyone else.

I am not saying that Nick Johnson was a better signing than Matsui, which you can tell from the fact that nowhere in my comments did I write about Nick Johnson. It turns out that both Johnson and Matsui were bad signings. If you want to use a time machine here, complain that we should have signed Vlad.

Brett Gardner is a 3.4 WAR player.

    You are brain dead.
