A look at the defense (with Total Zone), v3
Sunday, August 15, 2010 at 11:56 pm by SJK
First, UZR/150:

Second, Total Zone (provided by Baseball-Reference):
| Rtot ▾ | Rtot/yr | |
|---|---|---|
| Brett Gardner | 13 | 18 |
| Mark Teixeira | 4 | 5 |
| Robinson Cano | 4 | 4 |
| Nick Swisher | 3 | 4 |
| Ramiro Pena | 2 | 7 |
| Alex Rodriguez | -4 | -6 |
| Curtis Granderson | -4 | -7 |
| Francisco Cervelli | -5 | -10 |
| Jorge Posada | -8 | -20 |
| Derek Jeter | -12 | -16 |

Remind me again: why do we listen to a stat that would say Teix is a bad fielder — and Gardner is Roberto Clemente?
At RAB, do you ignore the second half of a post?
He probably has no idea what TotalZone is.
@ lover -boys: I said “a” stat. (that’s ’1′, paco)
Roberto Clemente also had an arm, which Gardner does not.
Also, lots of people who watch lots of baseball might (and do) say the same thing about Derek Jeter and any defensive stat.
Not saying you’re necessarily wrong, but the way you say it makes you sound no better than Bill Madden, Mike Lupica, John Kruk, or anyone else.
This is a flawed stat. Teixera? NEGATIVE? Best defensive 1B in baseball by good ole EYE TEST. Youkilis is there, Pujols is there, but TEX is the best 1B in the game. And that is not Tino love and Giambi hate. How many liners and errant throws does the man save? FUCK the Sabermetric ratings on fielding. I am “sure” David Ortiz is the best fielding 1B in baseball.
msp. Teixiera.
msp again. FUCK. Drunk. Done. Anger still there.
Good ole eye tests are a great way to think Jermaine Dye is a great fielder.
Or Jacoby Ellsbury
“FUCK. Drunk. Done.”
This
“Roberto Clemente also had an arm, which Gardner does not.”
Doesn’t he have nine outfield assists this year?
Well it’s good to see Granderson is at least contributing something.
Gardner is a fantastic fielder. Both UZR and TotalZone confirm this.
another reason to think these so called statistics are flawed, Granderson is not a very good centerfielder, no arm and terrible jumps and reads on balls.
Introducting Tom…the professional scout.
It’s sad that ‘Cucch’ gets angry at these posts.
It’s also sad that the nickname he calls himself sounds like a vagina.
UZR sure has lost that lovin’ feeling for Tex.
Ramiro Pena will make the hall of fame and A-Rod will not.
Defensive stats are retarded.
Sign Mark Prior.
Can someone explain the discrepancies between the two stats?
“Can someone explain the discrepancies between the two stats?”
Let’s go to the videotape. one is dumb the other is dumber.
until defensive stats show up on a 1970s baseball card no one will really care.
errors & eyesight is all this broadcaster needs
Damn good photoshop.
You guys and your fucking stupid computer math % shit….
I would bet a computer would not have said Jeter would hit into a double play but i was texting my friends while Gardner was up that Jeter would end it on a DP
Fuck the dumb stats you guys!!!!!!
Someone tell Jeter its ok to swing like a man!!!!
First off I agree about Jeter he needs to stop being a b.i.t.c.h and hitting into DP’s every time he is up with a man on. I would seriously just bunt him in any and all situations where he could potentially hit into a DP.
As for the defensive stats they are far from perfect and shouldn’t really be used to judge a team’s overall defense. Tex is great defensive player as we all see and most Yankee fans recognized Cano’s ability last year while he was rated as a negative defensive player. AROD this year has been in my eye a good defensive player and certainly not a negative. I don’t see how Granderson is getting the high marks he gets as he seemingly makes routine plays into dives. As for everyone else’s concern about Gardner the guy can literally catch everything hit in the OF and while his arm isn’t at a Clemente level which no one’s would ever be he is accurate and the ball doesn’t loft over 3 cut off man. The guy is an elite defensive player and that I do believe is accurately noted in all defensive stats not just this one.
Good thing I can catch and run real fast…because my bat has a giant hole in it right now….GIANT HOLE.
The advanced defensive stats seem to have the most trouble with first basemen. That doesn’t mean you throw the whole thing out.
If you look at how they’re produced, it makes perfect sense they would have trouble with first basemen and catchers. But they do a pretty bang up job over time with the other positions.
Juan Pierre could get 9 outfield assists by throwing the hitter out as he tries to stretch a single into a double because he knows Pierre throws like my dead grandmother.
ie. OF assists are a bad way to determine how good one’s arm is.
Gardner has an above average arm playing left field. He has a quick release and is very accurate.
