Former Jeter teammates: “He wants to get pizzaaiiiddd.”

From Wednesday's Daily News:
Jeter may be the ultimate team guy, but two former teammates believe that when it comes to getting paid, his pride will demand that he get something approaching A-Rod money, regardless of what he hits this season.
"It's up to (the Yankees)," one former player said. "Knowing Jeet, he's not going to let an off-year, if it turns out to be an off-year, play a role in what he thinks he should get paid. He just doesn't think like that. He'll be more convinced than ever that he'll come back and hit .330 next year."
The second former teammate essentially agreed.
"The question is whether (Brian) Cashman and the others think this is the start of a decline," he said. "And if so, are they going to factor it into the negotiations or just pay him for being the face of the franchise all these years? Knowing Derek, he'll say all the right things, but he won't give an inch based on his numbers this season."

No, but being on the Yankees and in the NYC media market makes Jeter WAY more money than the other way around.
Jeter without the Yankees isn’t Jeter. The Yankees without Jeter are still the Yankees.
No player is bigger than the Yankees.
Jeter should get 2-3 years at $10 million per year. A penny more, per year, and it’s a train wreck. He deserves about $6 million.
I’m not part of the anti-Jeter crowd but what actually would the Yankees be paying 25 million for? No other team would pay near that amount for a player with the production of DJ. The Yankees would only be competing against themselves at that pay scale.
They’ll overpay him but after being burned with the length of A Rod’s contract, I doubt they do more than 4 years. If he wants more than 20 million per year I would have to say thanks but no thanks.
Jeter will have to decide what he wants. They take care of him and he’ll have a lifetime job with Yankees as this generations Joe D. If he choses the Johnny Damon route he’ll leave a lot of money on the table in the end. He’s the one player you can say will be paid a lot more by the Yankees than by the market.
Great point by JimBear. The Yankees will be competing against themselves in Jeter’s contract negotiations.
Let him sign with Boston and let Nunez play everyday. The kid’s a star!
“A guy with a good average, below average power, below average range, and a below average arm – HIS ENTIRE CAREER?”
good avg? he’s a 315 career hitter
below avg powwer? he’s a SS avg 17 hr a year. id say thats avg
Below avg arm? do you even watch the guy play?
“Jeter is what he is: a good hitter with very rapidly diminishing skills,”
rapidly diminishing skills? did you just start following box scores this year? where were these “rapidly diminishing skills” last year? oh wait i keep forgetting, 2009 doesnt count. Even if this year is the begining to the end of jeter i dont think that a 36 yr old ss having his 1st bad year in 15 years has “rapidly diminishing skills” that doesnt even make sense.
so when he got his 3,000 hit in kc that would mean nothing?
“No, but being on the Yankees and in the NYC media market makes Jeter WAY more money than the other way around”
noone meant what he makes in endorsements, just the money the Yankees pay him. All those #2 shirts you see in the stands is Jeter making the yankees money. To say Jeter doesnt make the yankees a boat load of money is asinine.
Do you realize if they let Jeter walk what the ramifications would be? aside from the morons on here that hate the guy, the real yankee fan base would be in an uproar.
“Jeter should get 2-3 years at $10 million per year. A penny more, per year, and it’s a train wreck. He deserves about $6 million.”
why is it a train wreck? everytime this argument starts i ask this and never get an answer. why? if they pay him the same rate he gets now for 3 or 4 years why is it a train wreck? are we not going to be able to sign someone to help the team? Will we not be competitive? please explain.
Do you honestly think Jeter is going to embarrass himself out there?
Do you really think he’s gonna keep carting himself out there if he cant hit over .250 and is beyond slow at ss? you really think he;s going to do that to himself or the team?
Jeter has done everything right his entire career and has been nothing but class. He’ll know when it’s time to move on, change positions, or bat 8th or whatever.
it boggles my mind the concern over his next deal, who cares.
In short, in KC, Jeter is what he is: a good hitter with very rapidly diminishing skills, who would have probably been traded this year. Definitely NOT headed to the hall of fame.
This is stupid. Jeter would still be a Hall of Famer in KC. He didn’t accumulate 3000 hits b/c of the lineup or the postseason heroics or anything else. He accumulated 3000 hits b/c he is very good at taking pitches to RF for base hits.
And 3000 hits is still a ticket to the Hall of Fame. Would he be thought of as one of the best ever like he is as a Yankee? Probably not. He wouldn’t be nearly as famous, but he’d still be an All-Star on his way to the Hall. Think Robin Yount or Paul Molitor.
“All those #2 shirts you see in the stands is Jeter making the yankees money. To say Jeter doesnt make the yankees a boat load of money is asinine.”
That’s not how merchandising works in the MLB. Profits are split.
Sorry, try again.
that Jeter, Posada, Mo, and Pettite will be leaving the yankees and taking there talents to south beach to play for the florida marlins.
Ive learned that Posada, mo, and pettite will announce this a week after the w.s. ends. Jeter will make his announcement the following day on ESPN in an hr long special called “the decision”.
why is it a train wreck? everytime this argument starts i ask this and never get an answer. why?
Yes, actually you DO keep getting an answer, but you keep ignoring it. The answer is that it will mean less money to spend elsewhere b/c there are a finite number of salary dollars the team will spend.
This is an obvious point, but one you continue to reject. Once you accept the common sense answer that there exists SOME sort of budget, the rest of the argument falls into place.
“That’s not how merchandising works in the MLB. Profits are split.”
still makes the team money. People buy tickets just to go see Jeter, makes the team money. Jeter getting big hits, makes the team money. You do realize that pro athletes get paid so much money is because they make their team so much money.
so try again, jeter makes the yankees tons of cash. how can you even dispute that?
I could careless if they gave him 40 mil per. The Yankees give these contracts out like candy in their pockets and have gotten burned by many and still there is more in the wallet. They never bitch except when it comes to revenue sharing and if you ask me they have every right too. The only reason they try to reign it in is to shut Selig the sawx and the whiners. It has yet to harm the product on the field (post season is enough for me i don’t believe in WS or bust)and they will not let him go since he has a chance at 4k even if the back end is all DH time.
“The answer is that it will mean less money to spend elsewhere b/c there are a finite number of salary dollars the team will spend.”
umm no, try again. there is no budget. wait so you think if the yankees are blocked by this “budget” that they may raise this “budget” a tad? yeah they will, there is no budget.
Yes i understand they created this “budget” but to sit here and try to tell me that if Jeter makes to much this “budget” will stop them from increasing this “budget” is ridiculous.
It’s one thing trying to nickel and dime Damon with the infamous budget. But if you pay a yankee legend the same pay he makes now just to keep him happy, yes strictly to keep him happy, the budget doesnt come into play at all. There will just be a new “budget” that they will create and TRY not to go over.
until there is a hard salary cap take you “budget” argument elsewhere, it’s ludicrous.
“why is it a train wreck? everytime this argument starts i ask this and never get an answer. why? if they pay him the same rate he gets now for 3 or 4 years why is it a train wreck? are we not going to be able to sign someone to help the team? Will we not be competitive? please explain.”
Steve did a good job explaining this, but I’ll respond as well. If you want the Yankees to field a Championship caliber team, you can’t pay once-great players 3 or 4 times what they’re worth. The Yankees have a budget, regardless of whether you want to believe it.
I can’t even fathom why some of you jokes are 100% on board with Jeter making $20+ million per year. It’s comical. What do YOU get, out of Jeter being overpaid? His play is worthy of $5-7 million, and I’m fine with them doubling that to around $10-12 million. Any more, and it hurts the team.
Derek Jeter is the best .266 hitter you’ll ever see.
Besides, if the Yankees offered Jeter 3 years $36 million, what team in their right mind is going to offer more? Seriously. Do any of you Jeter loverboys think that a team is going to storm in and throw 5-100 at Jeet? No Fucking way. I suppose it’s possible that a terrible GM came in and offered $15 million per year, but even then, do you really think Jeter would leave for $3 million? Not a chance in hell.
@Josh Beckett’s Contract Extension
except this isn’t MLB the show, and these guys have egos. Nobody was offering Damon anything close to the 2/17 the Yankees offered him, but IN HIS MIND, there was no way of taking a pay cut. And this is just Johnny Freaking Damon. It doesn’t matter that no team will come close to 3/36, it’s still a significant pay cut that, apparently, his ex-teammates don’t think he’d accept.
Whether you like it or not, accept that Jeter will probably get a contract, similar to A-rod’s. 5/25 mil.
And yes, I do see him taking a “disrespected” route, and maybe leaving to take far less money. Highly, highly unlikely, but if you say “take 3 for 36 or go suck it”, I just don’t see how that’s going to fly.
What is wrong with this Jeter loverboy? Is Derek a family relative? Something is seriously wrong with you.
Jeter is an egomaniac. He will demand the sky.
“People buy tickets just to go see Jeter, makes the team money.”
I guarantee you Yankee attendance wouldn’t change drastically, if at all, if Jeter left. People will go see the Yankees because they win, year in and year out and because they’re the Yankees.
“Jeter getting big hits, makes the team money.”
…How, exactly?
“You do realize that pro athletes get paid so much money is because they make their team so much money.”
You do realize that just because you get paid something, doesn’t mean you’re worth that much. Is A-Rod worth 28M+ a year? Hell no.
“so try again, jeter makes the yankees tons of cash. how can you even dispute that?”
Because you’ve failed to quantify in any real way how the Yankees finances are affected by Jeter other than vague allusions to inconcrete, unsubstantiated ideas. The most direct, real way Jeter affects the Yankees is through his salary. He’s being paid too much right now and should be paid less in the future, plain and simple.
The impossible thing with this argument is trying to get past the emotional reactions to what are fairly reasonable arguments.
This is what I think most of the the reasonable fans are saying:
Jeter is probably going to be “worth” something like $10M/year going forward for 2-3 years. The Yankees, in recognition of all the extra stuff Jeter does for the Yankees (and he does bring extra revenue, just probably not as much as the fanboys think), should “overpay” to the tune of $15M for 3-4 years.
Here are what the fanboys are saying:
He should be paid like A-Rod for as long as he wants b/c once he starts sucking, he’ll simply retire and walk away from tens of millions. Because he’s “classy”.
And that is just nuts.
ok gary Jeter makes the yankees nothing and everything would be the same if he left. keep thinking that.
“Because you’ve failed to quantify in any real way how the Yankees finances are affected by Jeter other than vague allusions to inconcrete, unsubstantiated ideas.”
LOLOL wow you must be really smart. how are they vague allusions? the guy makes the team money, sorry you cant understand that. He’ll be making this team money long after he retires to. Regardless what i say you will dispute it because you cant get past you’re jeter hatred.
If the Yankees just let jeter walk because he wants to much money you’d actually be happy. Just proving you’re as phony a yankee fan as they get. What team did you root for prior to ’96? were you even alive yet?
inconcrete? do a better job next time when you try to act smart
“Here are what the fanboys are saying:
He should be paid like A-Rod for as long as he wants b/c once he starts sucking, he’ll simply retire and walk away from tens of millions. Because he’s “classy”.
And that is just nuts.”
Steve, can you read? Do you struggle with reading comprehension?
Not once has someone said he SHOULD be paid like arod so i dont know where you got that from.
and according to this board he already does suck. and yes Jeter does have class and i don’t know why you would think he wont leave the game that way to. Until he proves otherwise there is no reason to believe he’s going to go out there and embarrass himself and the team.
This board alone has make me root for jeter more then i even have in 15 years of watching him. I hope more then anything he has a big october so all you Jeter hater fake Yankee fans can kiss his ass and his next big contract you can use as a tissue.
“ok gary Jeter makes the yankees nothing and everything would be the same if he left. keep thinking that.”
Clearly that’s what I said. Your reading comprehension is spectacular.
“the guy makes the team money, sorry you cant understand that.”
Jeter makes the team money. That is pretty much undeniable. Does it outweigh paying him too much? That depends.
“Regardless what i say you will dispute it because you cant get past you’re jeter hatred.”
I don’t hate Jeter, though I like how you try and trivialize my arguments by saying they’re not born of logic, but of animosity.
“If the Yankees just let jeter walk because he wants to much money you’d actually be happy. Just proving you’re as phony a yankee fan as they get.”
Questioning someones fanhood is a pretty good sign you’ve lost a grip on the conversation.
People need to stop arguing with this guy. He’s either a troll or mentally retarded.
Jeter will sign for 4 yrs at 13-15 per.
“Jeter will sign for 4 yrs at 13-15 per.”
I’d rather give him 17M or something similar for less years. Four is a long commitment for a 37 year old player and I can’t see him getting that on the open market. I think 2-3 is pretty fair.
Yeah Jeter!!!! f-u haters, get bent
What’s with the fear of commitment? It’s Derek Jeter, a yankee legend that we got to see play his entire career. I hope he plays for the yanks till he’s 40 f’n 5, i dont care what his stats are. we’re going to see him set the all time hit record in yankee pinstripes and all you whine-bags will love every god damn second of it.
you people probably can’t even buy a pack of gum without crunching the numbers to get the best possible value for every penny you spend and doing hours of research on gumgraphs.com, where they use advanced stats to break down the number of chews in weather below 60 degrees before it loses it’s flavor percentage.
Jeter will be there to come up big when we need him the most
(I hope)
Jeter is coming back to the Yanks. Is there any question? And who gives a shit how much they pay him? I mean do you honestly think the Yanks have ever had onerous contracts that have limited their ability to manuever roster-wise. The only risk is that he takes up a roster spot for a player much better than him and when you look around the league and farm system, such a player does not play his position.
Also, I think the Yanks understand the importance of Jeter to the brand. Negotiations are going be handled tactfully. The whole merchandising aspect of the economic debate is overly simplistic. Jeter’s connection to the Yankee brand is more than just merch sales. He is the face of the franchise, of the the team’s renaissance as the best francise in all of sports. The Yanks’ brand will take a huge hit, they’ll be slaughtered in the media, if he walks away. This isn’t Joe Torre. That’s not something ownership will ignore.
But, again, don’t worry. He’ll get paid (probably too much) and everyone will be happy in the end.
You going to come along with me in these things I have to do, Derek? Because if not you can take your 90′s haircut and your mistress and move to Las Vegas.
Yes Suszyn Derek is the best .266 hitter ever. And Pena is the best .100 hitter you will ever see. Miguel Cairo was my hero.
