Former Jeter teammates: “He wants to get pizzaaiiiddd.”

From Wednesday's Daily News:

Jeter may be the ultimate team guy, but two former teammates believe that when it comes to getting paid, his pride will demand that he get something approaching A-Rod money, regardless of what he hits this season.

"It's up to (the Yankees)," one former player said. "Knowing Jeet, he's not going to let an off-year, if it turns out to be an off-year, play a role in what he thinks he should get paid. He just doesn't think like that. He'll be more convinced than ever that he'll come back and hit .330 next year."

The second former teammate essentially agreed.

"The question is whether (Brian) Cashman and the others think this is the start of a decline," he said. "And if so, are they going to factor it into the negotiations or just pay him for being the face of the franchise all these years? Knowing Derek, he'll say all the right things, but he won't give an inch based on his numbers this season."

an i’ll continue to say….WHO CARES WHAT HE GETS PAID

He’s 100% going to be a yankee, who cares what deal he signs. If he signs for the same rate he makes now it has 0 affect on the yankees or how they will do business. All it will be is something else for nomass to bitch about. wahhh jeter gets paid to much wahhh wahhh wahhh i want my mommy.

Guess im the only one who has faith in the guy and that yes he’s getting older and has prolly lost a step but can still be a .300 productive hitter in this league. Only time will tell.

Of course, it matters how much he signs for. Like all businesses, the Yankees have a budget and paying Jeter takes up part of that budget.

I mean really? his pride? gimme a break. These 2 former teammates were prolly on the team for a month tops and never even spoke to Jeter aside from the occasional “yes derek, ok derek, will do derek.

  9. ok says:

lol budget, ok guy, keep thinking that.

You honestly believe that if they brought back Jeter at the same rate he makes now it will stop them from improving the team if it needs it. You think if Pettite retires , Javy walks, and this team need a top SP that we wont go after Lee because Derek makes to much? you really believe that? get your head out of the sand. To say the yankees have a budget is an insult to every other team in MLB and their fans.

The yankees can have a 400 milllion dollar payroll if they wanted to. The make believe budget they speak of will not stop them from improving the team if they have to go over this infamous budget.

the budget argument is lame, take it elsewhere, maybe Mets blog or something?

You guys assume its either a) some scrub or b) guys you dont like (although Sheff was nearly MVP and a VERY productive hitter for the Yanks) and (Lofton was completely misused by Torre and had he been used properly we probably win the 04 alcs)

However I think its much more likely to be guys close to Jeter like a Tino or O neil. I mean the scrubs and malcontents you talk about arent even near this team anymore. I doubt the daily news beat reporters are like get me clay bellinger on the phone, i want to know what he thinks about Jeters contract. More than likely they are talking to guys who are around all the time like a Tino or Paulie. And those guys would much rather see Jeter their friend get paid than have some guy they probably dont like a la Arod making 30 mill a year in his 40s while Jeter is gonna get 8 mill for 2 years.

Having said that there is absolutly a budget. Especially with Big Stein dead. You can tell Hal is one cheap son of a bitch. Cash had to beg to get Teix,. And also a deadline deal last year was turned down for Mike Cameron because Hal didnt want to take on the money. Now Im glad they didnt make the move but not because of a budget. Just because it was the wrong move.

Also remember not getting Beltran in 05 because we got old man Randy.

You cant give Jeter a gazillion bucks just because hes Jeter. If thats the case lets sign Yogi to catch. I mean after all he won 10 rings, how can you disrespect him ?

there is no real budget, it’s fictional. Beg for Teix? the Yanks were not in pressing need for a 1b, cash just had to convince them this was the right move. They didnt want to take camerons money because he sucks not the budget. The yankees didnt want to invest that much in Beltran and it turned out to be the right choice. They didnt think he was worth it, they werent concerned about the budget.

please stop with the budget, there is no budget.

If we need Cliff Lee are we not going to sign him because it will put out payroll higher because jeter was signed to a big contrat? i mean seriously enough with the budget.

The Yanks could afford Cliff Lee even if Jeter got a big deal so no I dont think it would prevent that but its more than just next season. In future seasons we wont be able to sign people because of Jeter and Arod hamstringing the team.

Also how exactly where they right about Beltran ? Who have we had in cf since 05 that could even sniff being the best cf in baseball as Beltran was before he got hurt ? Not to mention if it was a choice between him and Randy obviosuly the wrong choice was made.

Who cares what Jeter gets paid? Its not going to affect any other off season deals. What, they won’t be able to resign Rivera because Jeter cost too much? There is no hard-line budget…there never really has been, the Yankees prove that year in and year out with the deals they make in the off-season and throughout the year. There’s numerous examples of this (the Teixeira one being the most recent and laughable). In the end – whether Jeter gets a 4/40 or 4/100 won’t be the deciding factor on if they can sign Lee/Crawford etc.

  30. Jon says:

Whoever was quoted are Jeter loyalists, since neither one would say definitively that this is the end of Jeter’s run as a productive player. The sad thing is, because of Hank and that moronic contract he gave A-Rod, Jeter has every right to demand his current salary. Whatever they throw at Jeter, he can counter: you’ll be paying A-Rod 20 million to roll up to the plate in a wheelchair when’s 42 with a fake hip. He’s going to get his ridiculous contract as well and the Yankees will have a 300-million-dollar payroll eventually.

Jeter looks done. I don’t really give a crap what the NYY pay their players, I just want to see good baseball. I also don’t have an orgasm every time I see a player who performed well, like some fans (OOOOOHHHHH TINO YOU ARE MY HERO, PAULY ONEILL YOU ARE LIKE, JUST SOOOOO AWESOME!). These guys are ALL overpaid. Why do we fans have to be subjected to YEARS of terrible defense and a clearly slowing bat because the guy used to be good????? Have some dignity, like the aforementioned ONeill and get out DJ while we still remember all the good years.

  35. CT Yank says:

@ Kevin S. – Jeter / Casey Close will definitely use (or spin) A-rod’s contract as a template even though its a horrible one

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  36. Budget exists says:

Yeah pretty much agree with the guy that said I aint no loyalist. Those jerk off fans that want to sign Jeter for a billion just because of what he DID, are the same ones that will be complaining when the Yanks are losing because of the contract.

And Arod was coming off his best season ever not his worst season ever when he signed that deal but it was still WAY too long.

And I do agree Paulie literally on his last contract told the Yanks he would take whatever they gave him.

BTW why do I see this contract issue turning into another Jeter loyalists hating on Arod and saying just because Arod has a bad contract, Jeter deserves one too.

Also another thing, Jeter has been VASTLY OVERPAID all these years anyway. He has a top 3 salary in baseball and is no way in hell a top 3 player all these years. So if anything he should now give some back to the Yankees and sign a cheap deal.

    someone please answer this.

what is it apparently “cool” to leave the sticker on your hat? Im talking about the MLB hats dirtbags leave the stickers on? why?

if it was a cool hologram or something i guess i could understand BUT IT’S YOUR FUCKING HAT SIZE. i seriously want to inflict bodily harm on douchbags that do this. Or just rip the sticker off and say no one give a fuck you’re a 7 1/4.

I was at teh yankee game last night and this dirty spanyard and his white gf were 2 rows in front. i could help but see they hat the stickers on their gay yankee hats. I wanted to slap the shit out of both of them.

I say gay Yankee hat because one was green and the other was black with some stripes on it = GAY

so please if there is a youngster out there that can explain this fad to me it would be much appreciated. I mean should i have left the sticker on my yankee hat? does that add street cred, i need more street cred.

I hope that he shows some of this “classiness” everyone attributes to him, and doesn’t go fucking nuts with his demands. But I’m kinda resigned to the fact that his new contract will get ugly quick.

Guess what: in KC there isn’t 200M dollars worth of talent around him; playoff heroics are never had. Huge moments of clutchiness are never cheered on by fifty thousand.
In short, in KC, Jeter is what he is: a good hitter with very rapidly diminishing skills, who would have probably been traded this year. Definitely NOT headed to the hall of fame.
