From SI.com (full article there):
The Yankees appear willing to enhance their latest $45 million, three-year offer to retain the iconic Yankee, but are said to be unwilling to match his previous salary on a deal of at least three years.
The Yankees’ next offer is expected to be for a couple million more per year, so perhaps in the $50 million range for three years.
Seriously, what’s Derek going to do if he doesn’t get the money he wants from the Yankees? Sit out the season?

The negotiation for Derek Jeter

Brian Cashman: you dissapointed me.
The Yankees front office is too predictable.
very WEAK.
Required November 28, 2010 18:00
3/45 was too optimistic. Cashman will raise it just a tiny bit to make it seem like Jeter “won”.
Easy there November 28, 2010 18:01
Call up Cashman, Jeter has no leverage, I can’t understand why they are bidding against themselves.
Negrodamus November 28, 2010 18:02
Keep it at $50. Don’t go above that. At least this way Jeter can think he won.
vinny-b November 28, 2010 18:27
why should Jeter get to save face?
it’s a baseball contract. Not a f#cking Peace Treaty.
baseball has become a joke.

But he’s only been paid $200 million by the Yankees. Don’t you know he’s building a million square foot house in Tampa! He needs to provide for his family!
Jim Leyritz's Cellmate November 28, 2010 18:15
You knew they would come up from 3/45, but I hope this is as far as they move. Of course I doubt it is…
Easy there November 28, 2010 18:17
Then again its John Heyman we are talking about, the man looks like he is always about to cry.

As of Monday Cash should lower the deal by $500 g for every day that he doesn’t accept.
Not a single team wants this wasted up icon. & casey close aint scott boras
duh November 29, 2010 07:36
You people are all idiots. Seriously. I understand what the team is doing, and what Jeter is doing. It’s a negotiation, and the team played a bit dirty by talking a little too openly and harshly about it. 3/45 is more than fair, but it doesn’t come close to accommodating the milestones nor the intangibles. Sorry, Yankees, but you gotta buck up for that. IF you want it. If you don’t, your offer is more than generous.
But this backlash against Jeter is absurd. Anyone who has ever been in a negotiation with a hiring party knows there is only one chance to get what you want, and also knows that it could become dicey. Most people, for fear of pissing off a potential new boss, will cave and take less. However, having negotiated with some difficult hires myself, the ones who push (and can also back it up) are usually the best hires. In Jeter’s case, you know what you are getting and what you aren’t. Don’t believe the reports of what Jeter supposedly is demanding, because they are ludicrous and neither Jeter nor Close are that stupid. Jeter wants four years minimum, I suspect, so do 4/60 and call it a day. Throw in an extra $1m for 3k hits, throw in an extra few bucks for maintaining a higher average, playing a minimum number of games, guarantee him a front office job … whatever.
But to all of you who would so easily dismiss Jeter and replace him with who, exactly? are a bunch of morons. He is far and away the best shortstop in the game who is currently available. It’s not close. And given his performance in the post season, historically, would you rather have him or JJ Hardy in a clutch October at bat?
Stop the nonsense. Who gives a crap? Pay him whatever, keep both sides “happy” and move on. It ain’t my money, so spend it how you’d like. Just put a winning team on the field.
Julia Roberts November 29, 2010 08:25
I get $25,000,000 per film. Derek puts asses in seats so give him 2 years at $50 million.
pete abraham November 29, 2010 08:26
What happened to tell him to go find a better deal hahahaha. Jeter will end up with no pay cut and a 3 for $63M. To hell with the luxury tax give him 2yr’s @ 45M and call it a day. Raise the beer prices to $10 bucks. Hank blows more money at the track in 6 months then Jeter wants
Great PS BTW.
whoa November 29, 2010 16:18
not the beer! blue moon is already $9.
Julia Roberts is not attractive and her movies blow.
pete abraham November 29, 2010 08:31
@ Julia Roberts…. you can put your ass in my seat any day of the week. Lets face it the quality in MILF’s Hank drags home after 3 AM would drop considerably, somehow him saying, “no problem Honey, I’ll introduce you to Juan Uribe tomorrow” just doesn’t get it done
Jack Donaghy November 29, 2010 12:52
Post of the deacde….for fat pete abe? Lemon! I’m going to need pizza
Steve November 29, 2010 09:18
If the yankees opening offer was $45M/3, they were obviously willing to go a little higher. Did you really think they would make a “take it or leave it” offer with their franchise player?
Now…having said that, I wouldn’t worry about them sweetening the AAV a bit to make Jeter happy, I would only worry if they tack on a 4th year. If they keep this to 3 years it’s still a win.
Steve November 29, 2010 10:59
And now the Post is reporting that Yankeed did NOT increase their offer.
In other words, no one really knows what is going on, and we should probably wait until he signs to decide if it was a good deal or not.
Brian C November 29, 2010 12:11
Why the hell would we up our offer? We are offering more than double what any other team would pay for this player. That factors in all the “intangibles,” respect, blah blah blah, that you fans who obviously have never run a business, hired anyone for a business, or balanced a checkbook think have any monetary value. We decided what we want to pay and that’s it. It is up to Jeter to see if he wants to play for us, or he can play for 5 million for another team, or retire and make $0 million next year.
What business in the fucking WORLD would increase an offer for anything without a good reason. Those reasons are: 1. someone else is willing to pay more. 2. see reason no.1
vinny-b November 29, 2010 12:16
agree.
it is episodes like this, which make one wonder if the Yankees organization really does have unlimited cash reserves/profits.
Steve November 29, 2010 12:25
why are you responding like this to a comment that it was reported that the Yankees did NOT increase their offer?
vinny-b November 29, 2010 12:14
duh:

Thank you DUH
All this noise about messy negotiations whats he worth Yanks shafting J j asking too much c’mon. They are negotiating. Yes the Yanks sup their original offer Yes J will take a lot less than 25 mill. He has to ask and the Yanks have to say NO then find common ground. Jeter is not stupid and there IS NO MARKET for him to exploit. Sad for him but a fact. He knows that Cashman knows that he knows this. This is business.
PS to all you doucheb that say let him walk WHO is a better shortstop on the market or available for a trade.
Prediction here Jeter earns TWO more rings in his time with the Yanks and a ton of money.
We as fans will forget this BS

27 Rings November 29, 2010 12:51
Great photoshop. If i were Cashman I would say FU, the new offer is 3 years at $40M. Take $5M off for being greedy. With all the endorsements Jeter has, he will make way moe than this anyway. Remember Jordan taking only $9M from the Bulls in his last year there because he was making plenty of money in endorsements and he wanted the team to spend that on signing others guys. That’s a team player!
Mike K November 29, 2010 14:13
You’re kidding, right? Jordan made $25-33 million/year every season with the Bulls after he came back from baseball. By contrast, Ewing, Barkley, Olajuwon, et al were making around $14-15 mil. And Scottie Pippen was making something like $6.
Mike K November 29, 2010 14:09
I don’t understand why so many people feel it’s necessary for the Yanks to start drawing the line NOW. With Jeter. Yes, upping our offer with no other bidders would be dumb/silly/foolish. But we’ve done it so many times before and will continue to do it again (probably this offseason), so who cares?
I swear sometimes some of the people on here act as if we’re in Harvard Business School and supporting a Fortune 500 company instead of fans supporting a baseball team. When did signing someone for good value in a sport with no salary cap become something we cheer for?
You guys act like we actually have a budget even though there has never been any indication that we do, just some words from Hank, Hal, and Cashman. Here’s when you should believe we actually have a budget: when we need someone, he is available as a free agent, but we don’t make an offer b/c we are over budget. Until that happens, I’m not buying it. Sounds like nothing but a negotiating ploy to me.
I honestly don’t give a shit how much money Jeter gets, but it sounds to me like if we sign him for “just” 3 years/$45 million, there will be a large population here jumping for joy b/c Cashman “won”. I just don’t get it. We’re baseball fans, not economists. I cheer for base hits, home runs, and strikeouts; not hard bargains, “smart trades” (like Javy Vazquez), management holding the line.
Steve November 29, 2010 14:22
Because there is a very large possibility that Jeter SUCKS in 3-4 years, and if he is on the team making $20M, he WILL be playing and he will be costing the team wins. Are we still allowed to root for wins?
Is this really so hard to understand?
Honestly, what do you think Jeter will look like in 3 seasons?
Mike K November 29, 2010 14:53
“and if he is on the team making $20M, he WILL be playing and he will be costing the team wins.”
See, this is where I disagree. If he sucks, he’ll be on the bench making $20 million, just like Posada will be this season if he can’t hit.
We have $40 million pitchers leading Scranton Wilkes-Barre to the playoffs. We paid Vazquez and Burnett nearly $25 million to get their starts skipped. What makes you think we won’t bench Jeter in three years if he’s making $20 million?
Do you also think that in 2017 if Arod has a degenerative hip and is batting .198 he’ll be our starting 3B?
Mike K November 29, 2010 15:01
PS – see Jason Giambi as further evidence. Was making $18 mil a year, but was left off playoff rosters when healthy, and routinely benched when he couldn’t get on base for long stretches.
Steve November 29, 2010 15:40
You may be right, but I think there is a difference between all of those guys and Derek Jeter. Jeter is going to have to be beyond terrible to be benched. He’s the captain. If he is merely “bad”, he’ll continue to play. This is just my opinion though.
Still, I am not swayed by the argument that the Yankees have been able to survive high salaried players riding the bench in the past so they should just plan for that with Jeter. When those deals were signed, it was not expected that the player would be terrible so early in the deal. The Yankees didn’t sign Giambi knowing he wouldn’t make the playoff roster at age 33. It wasn’t a reasonable assumption at the time the contract was signed.
However, thinking Jeter will still be a good shortstop at age 40 IS an unreasonable assumption.
You are basically saying the Yankees should plan on eating $20M in 2014 just because it’s Derek Jeter and because the yankees can afford it. I don’t really get that line of reasoning. A few extra million for old times sake? Sure. $20M? Kindof crazy.
Mike K November 30, 2010 15:26
I’m not necessarily saying they should, just that I don’t care if they do. I think we’ll still be competitive regardless.
Jon Schimenti November 29, 2010 14:21
haha, now that uribe has signed looks like its full steam ahead with nick punto, haha, at least he’s eligible at 2b ss and 3b, haha

The Agent for Jayson Werth November 29, 2010 14:31
Did I mention I also represent Alvaro Espinoza, who is thinking of coming out of retirement?
Make me an offer.
Seriously, fans, can anyone remember the days before Jeter? Do the names Fernandez, Meacham, Zuvella, Robertson, Mason, Tolleson, ring any bells? Normally I would be dead opposed to any money going to someone who is not my client, but……
Joe Pawlikowski November 29, 2010 15:22
I look forward to seeing Pena and Nunez battle it out in the spring.

If the Yankees don’t have a budget, than why was Gardner playing LF last year? I know he had a good year, but that was a prayer. And why were they okay with Cervelli at C for way too long? If we can’t Lee becasue we overpaid Jeter again, that would be a crime. And yes, we will be over paying ARod for at least a few years on his contract, why make it worse? Why not just sign Jeter to a 10 year deal? Why draw any line?
