Cliff: 5 yrs / $105 mil

That's what we would do. Granted, we have no idea what the Yankees' budget is, but we took a timeout from playing Magic: The Gathering and used Sabathia's contract as a reference (7 years / $23 million per). We then chopped off a couple years and a couple million in annual salary due to Lee's age.

Cliff will consult his family before making a decision: Denise, Vanessa, Clair (who is concerned about Yankees fans), Theo, and Rudy.

Lisa Bonet doesn’t look black enough in that picture. I afraid this might not be enough, though I agree that it seems like a fair number. A team or two would probably match, or even exceed this.
Keep dreaming. Anything less than 6 years won’t get it done.
I’d go $110
This is a bit of a stretch for a photo shop.
Less than 6 years won’t get it done? As in we have to commit to him from now until he’s older than Andy Pettitte?
Aging hitters that tends to be OK – aging pitchers: hell no.
It sounds to me like NoMaas doesn’t want to pay too much and would be willing to let him walk. If it came down to something like 6/125 I think you have to give in.
I’d give him a 3 month, $456 contract for 2011.
Let’s lock him up for at least five so we can make the awesome “Did Lee fall off a Cliff” jokes when he starts to age. He is a fly ball pitcher after all….
Wherever he goes he’ll get 6 years.
I’d love to see him take a 5 year contract, but I don’t think that’s even a possibility.
It’ll be 6 and somewhere between 21-23 mil a year.
6 yr 131 mil is my guess.
that aint cuttin it…nolan has more than that from doing advil commercials
John Darc is dumb.
Aging hitters that tends to be OK – aging pitchers: hell no.
Is this true? Anecdotally, it seems like there are many more pitchers in recent years pitching effectively into their late 30′s than hitters who are still killing it at 40. I’m willing to be convinced otherwise though.
No credit to me for the idea? Bastards
If a deal allows us to win 2-3 World Series over the next 6 years, I can accept a year or two of an over the hill Cliff Lee. That’s a big if, though.
@CentaurKing – Couldn’t have said it better. Of course a team like the Yankees would like 1 year deals on everyone over the age of 30, but it’s just not realistic. Give Lee the 6th year if it’ll win a couple of World Series during the life of the contract. That’s the cost of doing business.
I was very effective into my 30′s.
Will Cliff Lee disapprove of Bonet’s performance in Angel Heart?
If not, then give him a one year, $50 million dollar contract. But if he doesn’t win two world series games, he has to give it all back.
Seriously, I think that after 30 devoted years, I am starting to actually hate the Yankees.
Why do you say that Voomo?
Seriously, I think that after 30 devoted years, I am starting to actually hate the Yankees.
See ya!!!
Because I found myself enjoying the YoungPitching & Rejects Giants world series win So much more satisfying as a BASEBALL fan than I would have had the All Star At Every Position Yankees won.
(Oh no, you’re wrong Voomo. We DONT have an allstar at every position. We have Brett Gardner in LF. Brett Gardner cant hit. He doesnt hit homeruns. We need Crawford. We need Werth. We need we need we neeeeeeeeeedddddd!!!!!)
The Yankees as a BRAND, as a CONCEPT, as an INSTITUTION have become modern-day mythology. The EXPECTATION that they are going to win is an OBSTACLE, a BURDEN, a CURSE.
Baseball teams dont win it all because they are Expected to. After 107 years we still cant say for certain why a team wins it all. Yes we have advanced metrics. Yes in some cases talent differential seems obvious.
But still. Is there anyone, anyone anywhere, back in March, who, given a choice – Giants or Yankees to win it all – would have picked the Giants?
Maybe Brian Wilson.
I want that feeling back of HOPING my team can make it happen. Not being part of a culture that EXPECTS it.

Bullshit.
Well said, Voomo. Bravo. Yankees fans are an ignorant and spoiled bunch. The constant whining and kneejerk reaction is sickening. And the way they hate on each other is disgusting.
AC is the gay half?
You’re disatisfied with the yankees not winning so you blamed it on all the obstacle or, excuse me, CURSE, set by the yankees fans (who occasionally pinch hit for berkman against lefties) who expect the yankees to win the world series?
What goes on in your head? You’re explanation is the epitome of all mystique and aura intangibles argument that explained ‘success’ in 96-2000 and ‘failure’ from 2001-2008.
No team can be expected to win, no matter how good? Each game is often coin flip and any team who is “hot” aka the benefactor of variance at the right time goes far in the playoffs. Did cliff lee catch the yankee fan curse when he gave up 6 or 7 runs to the giants.
The yankees had the best offense over 162 games. Cherry pick any 4-7 game stretch and it could be assumed they have a terrible offense.
Just because the yankee fanbase takes their very increased chances of winning for granted doesn’t mean there is negative mystique and aura for the actual people playing the game. Intangibles are just what the commentators and sports writers say when unexpected happens due to regular old variance, bc its uninteresting and they probably don’t understand the concept.
I have to laugh at these Yankee fans longing for a crappy team.
If not for their starting pitching the Giants don’t even make the playoffs. You know what the Yankees can’t develop……..starting pitching.
So yeah go that prospect route Voomoo see how that works out for ya.
5/105 is what the Nationals would offer.
“All In Balls Out Cliff Lee Offer” STARTS at 6/130. Ripkin, Verducci, and Plesac were damn convinced that Cliff would get 7 years, so there’s that….
Hey RAB Guy, go eat a bag of dicks!!!!!!!
Gold Glove baby. Hey haters, tell me how my ass taste?
Voomo Zanzibar
Congrats!
Voomo, I think you are confusing two different points. Hatred of the Yankees vs. hatred of (modern)YANKEE FANS.
It’s still entirely possible to enjoy the team, all you have to do is stop reading about them on the internet. Problem solved.
Going after Cliff Lee is a typical Yankee move, one the team would have done at the outset of your fandom, 30 years ago. Basically, this is the way the yankees have operated since the 70′s. They will always be after the biggest star free agents. This is not new, neither is having the largest payroll in the game.
What has changed though is the level of entitlement that the fans expect. I agree it is annoying, but some of these fans were probably 10 in 1996 and have never known what it is like to not be great. They are spoiled.
But the actual team is still fun and has plenty of guys worth rooting for.
Mr. Jeter, (a few posts above) most us douchebags on this site really little if any intelligence, let alone baseball intellect. We wouldnt know a good player if he kicked us in the sack. And, the fact that coaches and managers of the MLB made the choice has no bearing. Even though collectively we know as much about baseball as a steaming pile of yak shit, we dont care what the experts in the field say, we think we can do better. Meanwhile we’re not even good at the the only thing we try to do… post shit on this site.
In other douchetastic opinion, lets trade Cano for Lee. Why? Cause thats what all the douches on this site wanted not so long ago. Now, lets all pull on eachothers johnson, and pretend what we write here really means anything… as if more than 4 intelligent people read the posts.

the most sensible statement that’s been written by a Yankee fan, in 6 months.
of course, you will get attacked for it.
when a team buys the top free-agents every year, winning becomes ‘hollow’
remember when Steve used to be Steve S, and his comments were good?
Hooray for Voomo Zanzibar!
We are looking for fans, and we have never been accused of buying championships. Apply for fandon at NoRings.org

You know, it’s funny how people today always go to the extreme. The previous posters (Voomo and Grandma Braden made excellent points) There is a happy medium somewhere. Get a clue and find it.
Lee is negro?
remember when Steve used to be Steve S, and his comments were good?
No idea what you are talking about. I’ve never posted under Steve S, and my comments were never good.
The only TV Cliff we should be photoshopping Lee’s face onto is Claven.
Wouldn’t that mean he landed in Boston?
I don’t know, I still get plenty of enjoyment out of watching the Yankees win and I love the fact that since 1996, we have been able to watch many of the best to play the game on a daily basis. Yes, it’s fun when you win unexpectedly, but it’s still fun to win when you know you’re the best. If they change the rules, the Yankees will change how they do business. I, for one, am glad that I don’t root for a team that chooses not to exploit its advantages just to give everybody else a shot. What the hell kind of ownership philosophy is that?
Why not me? He lost 2 WS games! Pray God not to play SF next year WS! That will be my revenge! I’ll play there next year, I’m a national league pitcher! Suckers…..!!!
Listen to Javy Vazquez, last post! All you pretend agents out there, and Ca$hman too, how much did CLIFF LEE LOSING TWO GAMES TO WEAK-HITTING GIANTS cost him in future earnings? Remember, this year Lee wss pitching for American League team, and HIS OPPONENT IN BOTH GAMES CRUSHED A LINEUP THAT HAD DECIMATED YANKEES. Yeah, I anticipate your arguments about small sample size and all that. Please just tell me, even if it’s a lie, that you are paying attention to Joba and Hughes and Nova and Robertson and yes, good God, AJ too.

Somebody else made this point and sanity requires that it be reinforced. The Yanks have always done this. Before free-agency money helped the Yanks to Mickey and DiMaggio.
So why has this changed? It hasn’t. If the Yanks can put a good product on the field then they should. Damn at least they try. Even during the drought from 78 to 96 as bad as the team was at least they tried (albeit poorly) to field a winner. I root for the Yanks because I grew up doing it. I root for the Knicks for the same reason and have to hide my face. You like the Yanks or you don’t Who cares about the losers answering and blogging (like me).
You are all missing the point. Signing Jayson is the key to signing Cliff. They became buddies on the Phillies last year and love to hunt and kill living creatures together. You can have Jayson for a mere pittance– $48 million for three years, plus an Evinrude powerboat.
Call me?
I can play for 15M @ year too!
Yo, Jayson and Scott…tell me how my ass taste!
