while a year makes a big difference in the part of the age curves that many of the yankees are at, those yankees also experienced severe decline last year and there is a very good chance there is regression (up towards ‘true’ talent level) this year for arod, jeter, teixeira, burnett, and otherwise possible improvement from gardner, granderson, and cano. Its reasonable to project them at 90 wins today, closER to 95 if Andy gives them 180 innings.

Garbage vs. Not Garbage December 21, 2010 08:53Reply
It’s the same team with everyone a year older, a rotation with possibly Sergio Mitre and Ivan Nova, an improved Boston, and defending division champs Tampa.
There’s a very good chance the Yankees don’t make the playoffs.
It is with heavy heart that i have to tell you that no maas has banned me my friends. I am sure this i p will be banned too. I love you all still. Say you say me. Your friend Lionel.
Actually, if Jefferson Davis had not allowed Lee to focus the Southern War effort on the Maryland/Virginia/Pennsylvania area, the CW would have lasted much longer. Take a look at the size of the Confederacy: Why was Lee allowed to focus on such a small geographical area? A critical blow to the expansion of the war to the west was the death of Albert Sidney Johnston at Shiloh in 1862: His reputation rivaled Lee’s, and after his death, Davis felt he had no choice but to accede to Lee’s strategic limitations.
Of course, if Lee hadn’t fought so steadfastly against the southern guerrilla units that were prepared to fight the North for years after the official end of the Treaty at Appomatox, hostilities could have gone on for decades and peaceful reconciliation could have been nearly impossible. Thankfully Lee was able to talk many back-country units into not hiding in the hills for years on end, only coming down to harass Northern units and prevent any sort of reconciliation and peaceful settlement.
The rotation looks awful. Pettitte is barely more of a sure thing than AJ Burnett is at this point. Lest we forget his groin pull that ate up a third of his season? Hughes fell off during the 2nd half. Nova was figured out by the 4th inning and subsequently lit up. Pettitte saves us from Mitre until he inevitably gets hurt.
But I suppose because the offense has a few less “ifs” than the rotation, it’s all of the sudden predetermined the Yankees will finish as they did last season. Case closed.
Why can’t we let Phil Hughes work with Super Jew Rothschild to develop into a dominant pitcher instead of buying pitchers in their prime. Also Nova has a good power arm with a solid spring and good work with Larry he could also become a very good pitcher. Why not gamble on our power arms instead of buying old players like Freddy Garcia or trading for some shitheaded asshole. Cliff Lee did not want to be here we all better hope that Andy does.
It’s about time we gave our farm system a chance to come through. All you supposed Yankee fans need to cool your jets and realize we still have a very competitive team. It’s more a race to see who stays healthier the longest in the AL East, not who signed the biggest free agent.
Will we be garbage? Well, as currently built we are a third-place team. CC is solid, but Hughes I have my doubts about to repeat that win total. Don’t forget that AJ was literally one of the worst starters by every statistic in all of MLB. He was horrendous. Mitre sucks. And Nova wet the bed when facing real competition. That spells disaster. And I think our offense and defense will take a slight step back. Right now this is a 87-88 win team. Please stop talking about payroll. The Yanks OVERPAY everyone. It’s not the payroll, it’s the value on the open market. If all the Yanks became free agents right now the value of the team would be cut in half. Do you think AJ is getting that kind of money? Or Jeter from any other team?

I agree with most of what you said, except for Nova. You really can’t make any judgments about him over such a small sample. However, at best, he should be the team’s 5th starter.
“As currently built, we are a third place team.” What?!? As currently built, they are at worst the second best team in the AL. Texas isn’t better than the Yankees, the rest of the AL West is an abortion, and the AL Central isn’t far behind. Tampa Bay has essentially no bullpen, no first baseman, and a rookie replacing their second best player in the OF. But other than that, they’re just great.

Cashman’s strong point never has been trading for high-tier pitchers. Though you could probably chalk that up to the “Yankee tax” when it comes to trading for players and such. For example, The Mariners wanted the moon from NY to get Lee, however they decided on trash (the centerpiece, Justin Smoak, is fucking atrocious. Don’t think otherwise) from Texas. Or fat ass Schilling for a guy who threw 86 mph and some other retards back in 2004. A-Gon for trash from Boston, and Greinke to the Brew Crew for a AAAA at best shortstop who should have lost most of his value after this year, some pitcher who should pan out to be decent, and possibly a druggie.
If Andy doesn’t re-sign, put JOBA back in the rotation, no MITRE please. That guy is only good for blowouts, he is not to be trusted in the rotation, much less key late-inning situations. I don’t know why Girardi is so loyal to this clown and not to other pitchers, like Vaszquez last year. It seems no matter how many bombs Mitre gives up, Girardi still uses him, again and again. Enough already, call someone else up, anyone in AAA or AA, but make 2011 Mitre-Free!!!!
andy or no andy i dont see a yankee postseason in 2011. its the same team as last only a year older. i cant see how a 38 year old pitcher who was on the dl most of last year is the answer. the fact that we only had one guy (cano) who batted over .300 last year is the problem.
If it’s the same team as last year, and last year’s team won 95 games despite losing their second best pitcher for half a season, and extreme down years from three of their very best players, then please explain to me how you don’t see this team making the playoffs.
And I don’t care about batting averages. I care about OPS, and the team did fairly well in that department last year, despite all the down years.
All of this doom and gloom is making me want to single-handedly take out the entire military of a small latin american country.
Except the Yankees built most of that record on the strength of Pettitte, a strong first half from Hughes, and Vazquez actually pitching well.
From the day the Yankees lost Andy Pettitte through the end of the season, they were 37-34. However, that’s somewhat deceptive, because they played weak teams like Cleveland for 4 games and KC for 3 at the end of the month.
From August 1st through the end of the season, they finished 29-29, exactly .500, mostly because their team ERA was 4th worst in all of baseball in the 2nd half, only ahead of KC, Pittsburgh, and the Cubs.
While you expect Hughes to be more consistent and Burnett to bounce back somewhat, they need at least for Pettitte to come back to replicate last year’s team. Otherwise, the rotation is better than last year’s at the end but nowhere near what they were getting in the first half last year that made them so dominant.
On a lighter note, listen to our podcasts to hear our stupid opinions in our own voices. I sound like a whiny bitch and Joe can barely talk due to neck fat. Also our soundtrack is used on a creative commons license. That means we didn’t pay for it because we are cheap and gay.
