You’ve seen the projections. You’ve seen pitchers who haven’t pitched in 15 years. You’ve seen renewed confidence.
What do you think? Like we did for the hitters, we ask which starting pitcher will most pleasantly surprise?

Since I have yet to pass the bar after 12 attempts, I will charge my usual $0.99 per/hr fee, payable in cash to “The Jews who can pass the bar.”

Can’t daddy just threaten the Bar, like he did with NoMaas?

Stop making fun of Ben you juvenile people. He is a lawyer and a nice guy.

AJ will be the most surprising, he’ll be the first pitcher in Baseball history to pitch a whole season without throwing a strike.
Theo Epstein March 15, 2011 00:23
0 percent of the vote for CC…and he is gona go 12-14 with a 4.70 era…shocks me
Just saying... March 15, 2011 18:15
Not in an opt-out year he won’t.
steamr0ller March 15, 2011 01:18
AJ remembering how to pitch won’t be a surprise since that is what he is paid millions to do. the biggest surprise to me would be Colon winning 5 or more games. the surprise i would like most, though, is some pitching gems later in the season by called-up “killer Bs”.
but isn’t the point of a surprise that you can’t see it coming?
Zigmund Fraud March 15, 2011 10:52
If B, B, and B came up mid-season and were mediocre, they would be the called-up so-so so-called Killer-B’s.
Brandon March 15, 2011 01:30
AJ: 17-9, 4.11 ERA, 185 K
The Scout March 15, 2011 18:16
I’ll sign on for that. Just show me where.

It was in a field near Buxton, at the base of a stone wall, underneath some black volcanic glass, I have hidden for you the secret to the Yankees 2011 season.

Since Joe and I constantly rip on everyone who uses the gym equipment in a way we don’t like, I don’t think I am going to be able to rehab properly. I hope this doesn’t affect me while I am on my knees, but I’ll find out later!
If everyone picks AJ..then technically, there's no one left to be "surprised," right? March 15, 2011 12:40

AJ Burnett March 15, 2011 17:35
I will “shock” the world and win 21 and the AL Cy Young. See what I did there?!
AJ Burnett March 15, 2011 18:18
Just for kicks I’ll win the NL Cy Young too. BTW, this is my favorite movie: http://tinyurl.com/6apz9pf

We’re good for 20.
JoeThunder March 15, 2011 17:37
Put all of that together and you have 106 wins. Do you think we’d win the division then???
JoeThunder March 15, 2011 17:37
105 wins*
Peter Gammons March 15, 2011 18:23
Nope. Those scrappy, small-market Red Sox will finish 162-0.

If AJ puts up less than a 1.45 WHIP and a K/BB over 2 again, I’d shit myself in surprise. Does that count?
Billy Ray Valentine March 17, 2011 03:52
Which pitcher will be the most surprising? Easy…Mitre…I’ll be surprised if he makes the roster.
DormantUlcer March 17, 2011 14:44
This surprised me last year. It wouldn’t surprise me anymore. Anger me, yes.
