i know this just makes me sound repetitive and douchey but i cant help myself: nomaas, this is why stats arent all important and why scouting matters too.
who was in a position to better judge whether colon should have been given a zero risk, high reward deal a few months ago? nomaasians or tony pena, who managed colon all winter? you can make fun of me for posting this all you want, but dont deny the fact that many people who run and comment on this site would have said they were just a few months ago.
and no, i didnt think the deal would work out. but under the desperate circumstances the yanks were in, i didnt get riled up over it and mock it either. so i wasnt correct, but you were dead wrong. which you open yourself up to by assuming a spreadsheet can predict the performance of an athlete.
Nobody is gonna grill you. The Yankees did sign Colon because they thought he might be able to contribute, and he has done more than anyone could realistically have predicted.
anyone who doesnt know what xfip is is a moron and doesnt truly understand baseball
im smart enough to know advanced stats and predict what people are gonna do solely on numbers, but im not smart enough to respond to posts beyond writing dick licker
Yup your grasp of inane, obscure, and let’s face it dull statistics, is a marvel.
I’ve withheld comment on your kind because up until now it wasn’t necessary, as this was a site tat mostly look at stats as a tool, not as the reason to watch a baseball game. In some regard and some places, that quaint notion has garnered me quite a bit of contempt.
One of the reasons I come here is because, for the most part, is my fellow cretins see stats as the tool they are.
If you like to tout yourself as some kind of prescient genius who can predict going to do solely on numbers then I salute you, truly. If I were you though I’d get out of mom’s basement, put on some new skivvies and some street clothes (if you own any), and open up a book, because if you’re that good kid, you could make some serious money.
If you make enough you can TommySmithJohnCarloswhateverthefuck he, she, it calls themselves today as your collector. That’s if benny sr. isn’t using it to collect his tenement rent that day.
See, I watch the game for the game, not the stats, if stats makes you happy I think that’s wonderful, just don’t come here and expect everyone to fawn all over you because your the biggest smartypants posting today, we have RAB for that.
I resent that, and am easily the biggest douchebag around… who else would equate SABR-bashing with slavery?
For more than a century Americans owned slaves. I guess Bruce Jenkins approves of that, too.
Follow this to its logical conclusion
It won’t be long before we get the first wave of nonsense from stat-crazed dunces claiming there’s nothing to be learned from a batting average, won-loss record or RBI total. Listen, just go back to bed, OK? Strip down to those fourth-day undies, head downstairs (to “your mother’s basement and your mother’s computer,” as Chipper Jones so aptly describes it) and churn out some more crap. For more than a century, .220 meant something. So did .278, .301, .350, an 18-4 record, or 118 RBIs. Now it all means nothing because a bunch of nonathletes are trying to reinvent the game?
Lay off the haterade, bozo. Apparently we have a psychic in our midst. Will you still be saying “I told you so” when/if he falls off a cliff two starts from now? Two sides of the same coin.
did you not read the part where i said i didnt see this coming either? this isnt about nomaas being wrong because they didnt think colon would be good- no one did. its about them reflexively panning the signing as a failure solely because of stats instead of “thats probably a waste of some money, but if tony pena said he looked reborn in the offseason, it could be worth it considering the state of our rotation.” he could die of a heart attack during calisthenics tomorrow and the signing would have been more than worth it for the two wins hes gotten so far alone.
You’re so right. Most of these guys are tools that can’t handle anyone posting anything negative about the way they “interpret” stats. You’re not allowed to have an opinion based on your knowledge of the game, without some fantasy baseball playing jerkoff who never played the sport well, jumping in with their retarded stats. They still think Brett Gardner is tits for God’s sake
Appreciate it. And, again, don’t think that I’m saying that I can watch a baseball player and know he’s worth a certain amount of money better than stats can. I’m saying stats can not be used to the exclusion of the opinions of real baseball people like Tony Pena, a guy who has played, managed, and coached baseball his entire life. Now that we all see the stuff Colon has, there’s no doubt Pena would have been an idiot not to recommend the Yanks ink him and test him out in the spring after managing him this winter. Some here laughed at the Yankees listening to that recommendation, even with the shallowest rotation they’ve had in years, because they think they can determine the future based ONLY on stats.
You know the thought that Colon wasn’t going to contribute had very little to do with stats, and a lot to do with the fact that he’s been irrelevant for the past 5 years or so.
Also even if it did have to do with stats, you can’t cry “see! all da advanced stats suk d00d!” after two starts.
Why are people on this site so angry all the time? Brian raises a point about scouting being important– why is that something that generates anger and controversy?

It would be nice if the DBs @ Nomaas and contributors also owned up and admitted that they were wrong. Like the original post said everyone jumped on Cashman about Garcia and Colon but now that they look good (and who knows how long that will last) give him a little credit! These two pick-ups could actually save the season for the Yanks. Plus with Millwood hanging in the wings Nova seems to have picked up a bit and performed real well. It kinda balances all the big money spent on losers over the past few years.
It’s a question of results versus process. Sure, Colon and Garcia have been great, but the fact that we were gambling on them in the first place is the real problem. A team with a 200 million dollar payroll shouldn’t have to be in that position.
Again, you can’t swing a dead cat in here and not hit someone who thought signing these guys was a move that would look this good at this point.
Going around saying SEE,SEE, YOU GUYS ARE STUPID, only leaves yourselves open to worse from these animals if and when Frddy and Gordo come back to earth. Which I predict they will, and that’s not based on stats, that’s from watching games and, seeing this same scenario played out nearly every season on other teams.
Uh Aaron Small came in and pitched well in the 05 playoffs, better than Randolph Johnson. Let’s be honest he may come back to earth, he may not but I think Tony Pena knows a whole hell of alot more about baseball than some the people who post here.

Aaron Small: 1G, 2.2 IP, 1.50 WHIP, 6.75 ERA, 1 terrible relief appearance, 1 loss (ironically, in Johnson’s start)
