Yankee legend, absolutely. Hall of Fame player, no doubt. But the ballwashing is getting way out of hand.
Derek Jeter, almost the second the fans begin to say his name (before they get the “urr” in DEH-rick JEET-urr) holds out his glove toward the fans. He does this without looking, while staring in at the batter. It feels to me like the perfect Derek Jeter gesture. He’s saluting the fans while never taking his eye off the game. He seems to me to be saying, “I hear you, and I love you, but I’m working right now.”
Come on, really? The guy isn’t dying. He’s about to get 3,000 hits. Let’s enjoy the accomplishment without eulogizing him in every freakin’ article.

He’s not even the bestest shortstop on the team.
Eduardo Núñez July 8, 2011 13:57
Will you play catch with me? I need the practice LOL!
Eduardo Nunez July 8, 2011 14:05
I occasionally salute the fans by air-mailing a throw to 1st into the stands.
Where’s *my* JoePos article??
Brett Gardner July 8, 2011 15:48
He’s not even the bestest lead off hitter in the team.
Brett Pedroia July 8, 2011 16:11
This title is very misleading. I thought this was about……well nevermind.
Derek July 8, 2011 17:16
ya’ll can wash my balls anytime, anywhere. word
Russ July 8, 2011 17:34
Just imagine how much worse it would be if it was one of the players from all the small market teams that make up baseball.
Derek Jeter July 8, 2011 17:37
Don’t you morons understand that 2011 9s all about me and 3,000? Seriously, this season isn’t about celebrating a WS title, but rather celebrating me and my glorious career. Hence why we spent dick on dick in the off season. We’re lucky to be where we are at this point. Now excuse me, I have to get back to chasing history, writing my hall of fame induction speech, polishing my 5 rings, and getting my dick sucked by Minka. I rule.

Yes, because the man who coined the term “Jeterate” is all about ballwashing the captain.

Sportswriters are downright reserved about Jeter compared to how they’d write about Ripken when he did so much as adjust his cup. Writers, particularly in baseball, are nostalgic and maudlin. I am sure if you go back and find stories from when George Brett or Robin Yount were approaching 3000, you’d find the same stuff.
At some point, No Mass’ reasonable efforts to balance the irrational Jeter apologists crossed over and became almost as irrational as what they were trying to correct.

Suck the spinach from my braces

Up until like two days ago, everything being written about Jeter was about how much he sucks now and was being done so in tones that were, quite frankly, brutal — hell, even Deadspin had an entry mocking how the MSM was basically painting Jeter as losing games all on his own.
Temporary ball-washing before they get back to that (and they will get back to that) really isn’t something worth getting up in arms over.

It feels to me like the perfect Derek Jeter gesture. With every groundball out, he’s reminding us all how he’s doing it his way. He seems to me to be saying, “Don’t worry, I’ll get to 3000 eventually.”
Jeter July 9, 2011 14:34
slurp on this Nomaas… 3000 was a dinger. Fuckin’ Douchebags
DormantUlcer July 9, 2011 15:05
I heard the first person Price spoke to after the homerun was Brett Favre…

I find it impossible to believe that NoMaas have been enjoying it. Every freakin’ article is about what a lame player he has become. Would his 3,000th hit been more fantastic if he did it in the 7th hole?
That last question is a figure of speech known as erotesis for all you fans of greek.
Yankee Fans July 9, 2011 16:50
You guys on this blog look stupid as shit now.
DormantUlcer July 9, 2011 18:13
Cuz Jeter still has one of the lowest OBPs of all leadoff men? Um, not really.
PeteAbeLuvsJizzToo July 9, 2011 17:02

Ted Williams July 9, 2011 19:02
