Seriously, he walked Maicer Izturis… he of the .713 OPS (with FIVE HOME RUNS) … intentionally. Izturis is the type of hitter that you get mad at a pitcher for walking… unintentionally. And Joe willingly walked him. As a form of strategy. To face an almost identical hitter, Peter Bourjos.
Who could have possibly been surprised that the night totally spiraled out of control from there? Not me, particularly given the fact that when Joe did the exact same thing a few months ago when Colon was on the mound against Toronto… things absolutely spiraled out of control.
For all of their shortcomings, this team still doesn’t deserve Girardi as the manager. Please, free them.

But I don’t think walking Izturis caused the game to “spiral out of control.” It was a stupid decision, but Bourjos can’t hit either and Burnett should have gotten him out.

The count was 1-2 which makes Texiera a more defensive hitter so the likelyhood of a single becomes higher and Granderson was trying to get in position to score on a single.
Of course with all things said and done, unless you believe the fallacy of the predetermined outcome you can’t say Texiera would have hit a single had Granderson not been picked off.
A studpendously inexcusable play all around though.

Perhaps NoMaas is “gay” for Rivera because they understand even the best closer of all time is capable of blowing saves and losing games every now and then. And that since Rivera has appeared in 94 PLAYOFF GAMES (in which he has a 0.71 ERA) it really isn’t fair to jump on him for blowing a small handful of those games.
Also, how did he “cost us 2 world series”? Yes, he blew the save in 2001, but he didn’t “cost us” the series. I don’t know what other World Series you could be talking about.
