After being dominated by the Yankees “C” lineup on Sunday afternoon and making AJ Burnett look like Walter Johnson, Boston and their $170 milllion payroll turn to John Lackey, the worst pitcher in franchise history, in Game 2 of the doubleheader as they desperately cling to their postseason hopes.

December 16, 2009, Red Sox GM Theo Epstein:
We’re thrilled today to be able to announce that we signed John Lackey to a five-year contract. John’s addition to an already solid pitching staff is a significant boost to this ballclub. He’s somebody that we look to be an anchor in our rotation for a long time coming.
John’s someone, with his track record and his consistency, who has put himself in a position to deserve a contract like this if you look at recent signings and last year’s free agent pitching signings for example, certainly John ranks right up there with those guys who got similar contracts if not exceeds them. It’s something we had to think long and hard about but in the end we believe in John, we believe in our pitching and our starting pitching going forward that this puts us in the best position. If you look on paper, we’ll put our starting five right up there with anybody’s.
Oopsies!

Some Boston fans say the Red Sox are playing dead. I say they will soon be playing golf.
Ben Watanabe of NESN September 25, 2011 17:40
I still believe in him. He will start game 3 of the ALDS in Boston.

If they bleed, we can kill them.

I had my usual O-Fer with two Ks.
How did you like my play in the first inning?
Gordon Estes September 25, 2011 19:06
If it was anything like how I played in the first game, it must have been incongruous.

Wait, did you say BOY wonder?? Oh wait… never mind!
Mandingo September 25, 2011 18:35
Lackey’s grinning because he knows he just fucked Theo harder than I ever fucked anyone.

Unquestionably the worst signing in baseball since Zito, quite possibly the worst signing in baseball history. And he’s about to lose to our AL ROTY candidate.
Pete September 25, 2011 19:06
No surprises tonight.
John Lackey September 25, 2011 19:24
I got the looks. I got the skills. I got the talent.

Too bad they made him look like fucking Rollie Fingers tonight.

Raul Valdez only picks the finest beans. Buenos dias!
Austin Romine September 25, 2011 23:18
Pedroia’s attempt to steal home was gritty, but I nailed him with a super slick tag! Not bad for a rookie, huh? I outgritted the gritster himself!

it was a grab for his short fat cock
Scott Proctor September 25, 2011 23:38
I really suck.

Mmm, me too…

Did you see how straight my fastball to Ellsbury was? Companies who make straight edges use it to calibrate their instruments!

Bring in Proctor!!
Juanito September 26, 2011 00:19
To be fair, NoMass was pushing Cashmoney pretty hard to sign Lackey, too. Can you imagine this season with AJ AND Lackey on the staff? Glad Chash no longer reads this blog…
King of the Centaurs September 26, 2011 08:48
Citation Needed.
I don’t remember NoMaas pushing for Lackey because he was too old, wanted too much money, and wasn’t good enough for it.
Alfredo Griffin September 26, 2011 09:19
I don’t remember NoMaas pushing for Lackey at all. That’s bullshit.
Rich Mahogany September 26, 2011 10:47
I’m pretty sure NoMaas never pushed for Lackey. Francis yes, Lackey no.
A-Rod, Jeter, Jones, Martin September 26, 2011 01:11
Good thing Pena, Nunez, Golson, and Romine were getting at-bats in extra innings. We were too tired.

I thought Joe was saving me for the Tampa series.

Hows my ass taste?
Mr. Beer September 26, 2011 13:09
You’re talking shit after winning (barely) 1 out of 3 must-have games against a team that has already clinched everything and is playing out the string? Pretty delusional.
Camden Yards September 26, 2011 22:34
Hows my wall taste?
Jason "C" Varitek September 26, 2011 10:24
“To fall behind again, it took a lot of grit, because it’s happened a lot,” Varitek said. “This team gritted.”
John Lackey September 26, 2011 11:15
I will not be talking to any of you in the media about me divorcing my cancer stricken wife. I hope ESPN respects my wishes for privacy and uses this to justify my horrible season.

our problem is that we let Girardi manage….he negates any advntage we might otherwise have.

rrriiibbit ribbit. Some one sent me a text before my start and I am horribly offended by it. Who the hell gave my phone number to Brett Pedroia? He keeps asking me if he can baby sit my kids on the weekends when I am pitching on the road.
Joe September 26, 2011 16:03
Lackey pitched his best game against our offense ! ugh !
Buck Showalter September 26, 2011 16:44
This new site background is insulting to Flanny’s memory.
Mike Flanagan September 27, 2011 00:29
As is the whole franchise, Buck.
Joe Girardi September 26, 2011 18:35
I will be sure to start most of the regulars against the Rays after refusing to use A-Rod, Jeter, Martin, and Jones last night in extra innings against the Red Sox. You guys wanted Boston in the playoffs instead of Tampa right?
Rich Mahogany September 26, 2011 22:34
Who cares about Sunday night. The Red Sox just shit the bed against the Orioles again! Between anxiety and cirrhosis, their fans will all be dead soon.
