Once again the Yanks have failed to make a notable splash thus far in the offseason, meaning hack writers such as myself have to write columns that are even shittier than normal, if at all possible. The fact that the Yankee organization has made this offseason so boring for me means that this upcoming 2012 team is destined to make a 4th place finish in the AL East for sure. And it makes it more difficult for me to make jabs at their payroll given the fact they aren’t really spending. The Bush administration allowed Lehman Brothers – just one investment bank – to fail. We’re still recovering from the resulting crisis today.
If you want a government that never engages in a bail out, that government has to enforce strict regulations on very large businesses so they can’t be managed so incompetently that they collapse and send the U.S. economy into recession or worse.
You can’t have it both ways. If you want true free-market capitalism with no bailouts, the result will be stock market collapses, soaring unemployment and frozen credit whenever giant banks or industries go under. If you really want that, I’m not sure why.

I wrote “another big move” because they already gave Sabathia an extension on the largest pitching contract ever so he wouldn’t opt out. You know you’re a Yankee fan when your team signs a player to the biggest pitching contract ever, then extends that player, and you complain that the team hasn’t made enough big moves.
The lineup, bench and pen are pretty much set, so we’re really just talking about adding a starter. Boras wants 5 years/$60 million for Jackson, who I still don’t see as a frontline guy. Do the Yankees want another multi-year contract to a high-WHIP pitcher on their books?
