Mariano’s Prayer
Our Mariano, who art in the bullpen,
hallowed be thy arm.
Thy cutter come, thy save be done,
on the road as it is in the Bronx.
Give us this day our daily save,
and always break the bats of those who tresspass against us.
Lead us to #28, and deliver us from Boston
Amen
Ca$hmoney February 23, 2012 07:14
With aj and Montero gone, Mariano has the most annoying meme on this site. Can’t wait til he’s gone.

How many times do you think we’ll see a guy retire at his age, and still be a force to be reckoned with?
Pete C. February 25, 2012 06:45
I guess not to many people here watched Willy Mays when he played for the Mets.
Leather Bound Books February 23, 2012 06:58
Good for him. Go out on top. What a hero.
Duh February 23, 2012 08:37
The role of the closer in the regular season is the most over-blown, over-hyped and over-paid position on the field. There, I said it. Life will go on, although admittedly Mo is a God and will never be “replaced”.
The post-season, however, is where the real money is earned, where you cannot possibly overstate the importance of Mo Rivera and where, truly, his legacy lies. I’m not too worried about the impact of not having him during the regular season (go ahead and flame me) but I cannot imagine a post-season without him.
Pete C. February 23, 2012 10:20
I disagree, if it wasn’t for him in the regular season, the team might not have made as many post seasons.
That wasn’t a flame was it?
Anyway, in my opinion, season after season he’s been the teams MVP.
Now watch the flames.
Duh February 24, 2012 08:59
There’s no doubt he has contributed mightily. My argument is that the era of the high-money Closer is coming to an end, as evidenced by recent activites of many teams, and by the fact that the notion of NEEDING a lock-down dedicated closer has been summarily dismissed by many successful teams.
Yet you can absolutely make the case that of the 5 recent championships, Mo has been instrumental, and we wouldn’t have five without him.
We can survive and succeed in the regular season without a Mo-caliber closer, as there simply IS no other Mo-caliber closer out there. But he will be sorely missed in the post-season, because he is the ultimate Ice Man.
Joe Páwlikowski February 24, 2012 14:26
You write like me. Long. Boring. Pointless. Throw in a pie chart.

Brett Pedroia February 25, 2012 10:42
Grown-ups are lame
Pete C. February 25, 2012 07:02
Ok, point taken, but how about the reason the lock down closer is disappearing is because they’re more rare than winning Powerball tickets.
That may be part of your argument, but bear with me.
If guy’s like Mo, and Hoffman, are so rare, than the teams that can’t get them figure out how to make do.
And successfully, in some cases.
But here’s the question, if they had the opportunity to have a lockdown guy like that, they’d take them, post season, and regular.
You may be right the position maybe over-rated, and Mo made it seem indispensable. But how much of your reasons for teams doing without come from lack of production from one guy(like Mo) or because it’s not that important?
Ca$hmoney February 23, 2012 13:58
Key word being “role” I would suggest that Mariano could have been worth three extra wins per year over the course of his career if he had been used based on leverage rather than inning.
