One of the biggest stories likely to come out of this is whether the Mariners had any idea of Pineda’s injury, and therefore were compelled to pull the trigger on the trade.
Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik spoke to ESPNNewYork.com soon after the word of Pineda’s season-ending injury got out and refuted those claims.
“Absolutely not,” Zduriencik told ESPNNewYork.com. “None, whatsoever. Before the trade, he was going to be our No. 2 starter … “I feel bad. We love Michael Pineda. He’s a great kid. This is very unfortunate.”
What do you think?

They knew. Cashman tried to make under the radar move and it burned him.
If everyone knew he was on trading block, other GMs would have probably done their due diligence and seen his velocity drop significantly in his last start of the season last year.
Giving away Jesus Montero for nothing sure was fun.
This team is getting old and fast.
Brett Pedroia April 26, 2012 13:02
It takes more than drop in velocity to tell someone’s shoulder is fucked. If it was that simple, the trade wouldn’t have been made. There are scouts, assistants, executives, etc. that all have considerable input besides Cashman. If all it takes is a drop in velocity to kill someone’s arm, someone would have said “Well shit, look at his velocity. His arm will fall off.”
John G April 26, 2012 11:41
I don’t think they knew. Maybe they knew the guy needed to be monitored, otherwise he’d get fat and lazy and be even more prone to injuries though.
At least we have Campos…
Damn it.
Eduardo Núñez April 26, 2012 12:10
FOCK CAMPOS MOTHERFOCKER WHO THE FOCK CARES ABOUT MOTHERFOCKER JOSE CAMPOS ONLY DA SAME NERDS WIT BONERS WHO SAW HUGHES DOMINATE IN A BALL AND CALL HIM FUTURE ROCKET
HAHAHAHAHA SOCK ON THIS MAMAGUEVO
The Truth April 26, 2012 11:41
If anyone can say with a straight face that loss of velocity in the second half was not a big deal, then I have a fucking bridge to sell you. The fact that he came to camp 20 pounds overweight should have set off alarm bells around Tamps, but then when your GM is chasing poon who has time for things like due dilligence on a trade that could affect your franchise for years to come. If Seattle knew who knows, but the fact that they moved him after one season sure smells funny.
Truth Can't Handle the Truth April 26, 2012 11:50
What was average fastball velocity from first half to second half?
Eduardo Núñez April 26, 2012 12:11
THE AVG FASBALL SECOND HALF WAS: FOCK YOU ASSHOLE MOTHERFOCKER BICH NUTS
The Truth April 26, 2012 12:25
Gee Brian trolling again, isn’t there another mentally disturbed woman out there for you to give a vehicle owned by the Yankees to?
Truth Can't Handle the Truth April 26, 2012 12:42
So…No data?
groovitude April 26, 2012 13:05
I’m not sure where the best place to split the data is, so I’ll do it in a couple of ways. All numbers will be Pineda’s average fastball velocity, and all numbers are from TexasLeaguers.com’s pitchFX tool.
Seattle’s first 81 games of ’11: 94.9 mph
Seattle’s last 81 games of ’11: 94.3 mph
Pineda’s first 14 games of ’11: 95.1 mph
Pineda’s last 14 games of ’11: 94.2 mph
Pre-ASB: 95.2 mph
Post-ASB: 94.2 mph
Pineda’s first set of 7 games of ’11: 95.7 mph
Pineda’s second set of 7 games of ’11: 94.7 mph
Pineda’s third set of 7 games of ’11: 94.4 mph
Pineda’s fourth set of 7 games of ’11: 93.8 mph
Ritardi losses:2 April 26, 2012 13:58
The drop off from 95.7 mph to 93.8 is one hundredth of a second over the distance from the mound to the plate. I don’t think that was the issue.
Leather Bound Books April 27, 2012 05:32
OK seriously, I see the drop, but for a young pitcher pitching his first full season, I don’t see that being the indication of an injury much more than just natural fatigue.
It’s not like he went from 97 to 91.
The Truth April 26, 2012 13:13
Gee I guess the 1-4 record, 5.12 ERA in the second half and decreased velocity in his final two starts weren’t enough for you Brian. I mean it’s not everyday that a team gives up a cost controlled pitcher, in a pitcher’s park for a DH right?
Leather Bound Books April 27, 2012 05:33
Seriously, you are walking around calling yourself “the truth” ?
Brett Pedroia April 26, 2012 13:03
So instead of sending scouts out there to look at Pineda, or have statisticians run numbers, Cashman was hunting poon? Is Cash the only person in the front office? Are there not others that help evaluate personnel?
a five year old boy April 27, 2012 09:36
Did you seriously just make a post without thinking of me :(
Sully April 26, 2012 11:42
Haw haw haw, what a buncha losahs, that losah Cashman isn’t a genius like Th, eh, Ben Cheeriton or whatevah his name is. Losahs!

Red Cloud April 26, 2012 11:47
Maybe, but good luck proving it.
Sarcasm April 26, 2012 11:50
Of course they didn’t know.
Just look around the league at all the teams trying to deal cost-controlled, high ceiling pitching.
I'm not being sarcastic April 26, 2012 11:57
Or top-10 hitting prospects.

Montero April 26, 2012 12:15
You people are illogical. You think I am great, but you think that it is somehow suspicious that I brought a top young pitcher in a trade?
Marshmellow Man April 26, 2012 12:15
I believe the technical term for describing that interview is; bullshit.
MactheKnife April 26, 2012 12:16
Stop whining crybaby. That’s what physicals are for.
Anyway, enjoy watching Montero blossom.
Btw, so much for “the best team in baseball” dooshbag. Rangers abused the Yanks Ike-Turner style.
The Truth April 26, 2012 12:24
Gee you won two hoem games in that shit hole you call a ball park. Shouldn’t you fake ass Texas fans be worried about which draft ol Jerry is gonna fuck up tonight. I wouldn’t brag about getting to the WS twice and losing because your crack smoking manager left a shitty fielder in to butcher a routine fly ball.
Josh Beckett April 26, 2012 12:20
I have a great diet for him to follow on his road to recovery.
hi April 26, 2012 12:25
If there was a shoulder issue and the Yanks med staff couldn’t figure it out, people need to be fired. Now.
Jonathan Pap-Smear April 26, 2012 13:00
Maybe they should have included a pap-smear as part of the physical.
Jim Leyritz's Cellmate April 26, 2012 13:36
I wish they knew because it would give me something even more tangible to hate, but I doubt it. Either way, the Yankees had plenty of opportunities to back out of the deal if he was injured and they didn’t.
Rimjob Mike April 26, 2012 13:42
I smell a rat.
Michael Kay April 28, 2012 13:25
No that was just me. I farted.
Pineda's shoulder April 26, 2012 13:54

The Real Truth April 26, 2012 14:55

Shogun of Harlem April 26, 2012 15:20
Now all y’all need to step as I go looking for more racism on the internet like all blacks do in their spare time.
Yo Momma's a Ho April 26, 2012 15:41
Or shit talking about minorities on the internet, because it allows them to hide like the pussies they are. What happened a black or hispanic man take your woman or probably your man?
Come on now April 27, 2012 12:38
You can’t call people out for being racist idiots while being a homophobic idiot.
Brian S. April 26, 2012 16:27
They knew.
alex anthopoulos April 26, 2012 19:07
jack called me up & said Pineda for Brett Lawrie
I hung the phone up on that crazy sob.
R2-D2 April 26, 2012 19:13
Fuck if he got suckered or not (he did) we have a GM that routinely gets cornholed on pitching and shits on his own farm system that everyone praises but he never gives anyone a chance they are still fucking platooning Brett Gardner for crapsakes. Phelps wasted being everyone’s caddy here’s a hint Ritardi and Cashman the better pitcher is Phelps stop trotting out that asshole Garcia on us fucking idiots. The way this team makes personnel changes is at a glacial pace you have to lose 10 games before suck is recognized or make 30 errors before it is realized NUNEZ IS NOT A FUCKING SS assholes
Eduardo Núñez April 29, 2012 11:33
HEY WHY NO U STIK MIDDLEINFER IN YOUR HERRY CULO
Bud Selig April 26, 2012 20:11
My goodness, this was like Christmas. I’ve been focused on destroying the Yankees’ success for many years but sometimes you have to hope for a lucky break to move things along. I’ve managed to screw the Yankees at the major league level with my Yankee tax, and now I have control of the draft and the smelly third-world players to make sure the Yankees can’t reload. Somebody call Betty White, I feel like celebrating on the town!
The Super Real Truth April 26, 2012 20:50

I heard he likes internet tough guys the best.
