From Marc Carig of the Star-Ledger:
Yankees pitching prospect Michael Pineda has an anterior labral tear in his right shoulder that will end the 23-year-old right-hander’s season, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said today.
In announcing the news to reporters this afternoon, Cashman said he was “devastated.”
Cashman said he believes the tear occurred on the final pitch of Pineda’s extended spring training start on Saturday. An MRI on Pineda’s shoulder administered this offseason, prior to the trade that brought Pineda to the Yankees, did not show any damage, Cashman said, though small labral tears are not visible on MRIs.
“We got a healthy player to the best of everybody’s knowledge,” said Cashman, who noted that Pineda’s rotator cuff is fine.

It’s still too soon to judge this trade.

Include their ages and prior years stats, and see if you come with the same non-judgement.
Give me Cashman’s head!

Until Montero shows he can produce elite numbers at the major league level, he’s nothing the Yankees can’t replace. So far he’s shown he can have half of a Shane Spencer September. Whether it’s A-Rod in the future or another 1 year free agent, DH is the least of the Yankees worries. If Montero becomes one of the best in the game, he will be back here in 5-6 years at the same ridiculous cost he would have earned here anyway. Until Pineda shows that he will never recover or Campos fails to reach the Show, the result of the trade is incomplete. We don’t know the other offers Cashman had out there, but if the Yankees become 2012 World Champs, WHO CARES?

Lets not forget giving Andrew Brackman a Major League deal, coming off TJ surgery, and then comparing him to David Price, telling media outlets “You think Price is good, wait until you see my guy”. Then evaluating the pitching landscape and deciding that Ian Kennedy, IPK, was the one that was expendable over Joba and Hughes. IPK came in 3rd in Cy Young voting in 11. ASSHOLE

Ibanez 2 for 4 tonight with a homer, one run, and 2 RBI’s. Diarrhea-head.

I can actually field a position, make 1/2 as much and have a future. See me in three years when Pineda is pitching out of the bullpen for the Royals and Campos is deported.
Not About You April 26, 2012 03:11
LOLWUT No you can’t. Nice passed ball today. I’m sure King Felix appreciated it. You can’t even displace Miguel “.164″ Olivo as the catcher on this team. Why don’t you come back and talk shit when you learn to hit right-handed pitching.
As far as the Yanks are concerned anyway, you’re history. Good luck, have a great career, and thanks for bringing back what should amount to two quality arms.

Such an unnecessary trade. Strange how Montero was traded because his defense was so bad yet Nunez is allowed to flop around the field like his hands have arthritis. Your telling me that Montero couldn’t get 2 days a week behind the plate to improve and the rest of the week get DH ABs with the obvious same production as Ibanez with possible high upside? Fuck Cashman
Pineda's shoulder April 25, 2012 18:52

Revisionist History April 26, 2012 11:15
There was a reasonable expectation that Pineda was a very young, very hard throwing, top of the rotation starter. I have no issue with shipping out a very good hitter who probably can’t catch for a guy like that. Especially when you have a number of aging players that will require significant DH time in the coming years.
He got hurt. It’s now a really bad trade. But he passed his physical, and I’d make that deal again for a pitcher who’s that young and has proven he can dominate.
Pineda's shoulder April 25, 2012 18:55
They wanted me to call Bartolo’s or A-Rod’s doctor. Skip that, I’m going to collect some Yankee checks first. I’ll get it the year I become a free agent. Hahaha!!!
Pay dat man his money!
Curved Slightly April 25, 2012 18:59
First: I’m going to remind everyone that I was right from comments about a month ago. I’ll be accepting apologies on here all week.
Second: This offseason there were two young, consistent and injury free pitchers available. Their names? Mat Latos and Gio Gonzalez. Montero and a few other prospects could’ve netted us one or the other. And (get this) THEY’RE ACTUALLY PITCHING THIS YEAR!!! Couple this with the fact that they could’ve had Edwin Jackson (who I was against) for just money, we could’ve had a nasty rotation.
Instead, we end up with a kid whose CAREER is in question and a 37 year old Asian. CC, Nova, Latos/Gio, EJax and Hughes >>>>>>>>>>> CC, Kuroda, Hughes, Nova, Freddy.
Let’s face it… a torn labrum is the worst injury a pitcher can have. There’s not many pitchers who come back and make any sort of impact after this kind of surgery. Let’s pencil in Pineda as a #5 at best, a reliever as the most likely scenario or even probably the most dominating starter to pitch in an independent league.
Cashman needs to answer for this. Too many years of horrible pitching acquisitions/trades, but this one really takes the cake. Thanks Brian! Awesome trade!
Pineda's shoulder April 25, 2012 19:09
Wouldn’t the worst injury for a pitcher be losing his pitching hand/arm?

Latos also went to a major hitters park this year. I could hit 35 out of there.
MILF April 26, 2012 01:08
On the road, Latos has a 3.35 FIP and a 3.63 xFIP for his career.

Funny how I was a non-factor on here to everyone but Curved Slightly and R2-D2, and now it has come to be an upfront matter now that we know the cause was significantly more than a dead arm. I hope you won’t miss me being at 98 because you’ll be lucky if i hit 95 ever again. I did a disappearing act after the all-star break last season and I don’t know why you all thought I would miraculously return, perhaps because you’re all a little on the retarded side of life.

Pineda's Velo April 25, 2012 20:45
If you would have opened up your eyes and actually looked up some of Pineda’s post all-star break stats you would have seen that he was mediocre at best. His velocity was down and his K’s/9 were also down drastically. Also why would a GM as smart as Seattle’s have given up a young stud to place behind King Felix in the rotation? Perhaps because he was hurt and now his career is in serious jeopardy. Would you mind doing yourself a favor and read about pitchers who have had labrum injuries? or are you just some egotistical moron who likes to disagree even when presented with facts?

There are no super powers you fucking queef weasel. It’s called common fucking sense. Pineda’s second half saw a drastic drop in velocity coupled with an increase in his H/9 resulting in more runs allowed. His velocity did not return in the spring. A drop in velocity is indicative of a shoulder injury. Lack of command indicates and elbow problem.
Seriously, are you this fucking stupid in real life or do you just play a retard on the internet?

Cashman should be let go not because he has no idea how to spot pitching talent but because of these reasons:
In the last year that international signings were not capped, the Yankees spent their lowest amount in the last 10 years.
Because Cashman screwed up with Igawa he did not look hard and Yu Darvish when he was a guy that had been on the screen of the top scouts for the last three years. When you have all the resources the Yankees have and don’t take a shot at a 25 year old talent and drawing card like that you are asleep.
Montero came up and had awesome right center power, was not scared, deepended our line-up, left his teammates in awe and was a young bat that we needed to build around for the next 15 years and instead he will make Jay Buhner look like Tony Womack and every Yankee fan will have to dread it everytime they look at a Seattle box score for the next 15 years. We traded the next Miguel Cabrera for a pitcher that not only was likely injured but the league caught up to the second time around and had a second half ERA of 5.03.
I could go on and on but the most important reason he should be let go is because instead of focusing on improving this team and doing his job he was having an affair with a bi-polar ulgy woman. He should not be fired because he had the affair, he should be fired because of his judgement in who he chose here.
Yankee fans deserve better than this loser who has done less with the most resources in baseball over the last 12 years than anyone could imagine.
How I wish George was alive or that we did not have a bean counter son who has no passion for winning running the team.

Stupid moron April 26, 2012 01:04
I assume you and Pineda’s Velo are the same person, so I’ll respond to both.
Rasner was claimed off waivers and barely even pitched. His main season, 2008 other shitty Starting Pitchers included Sidney Ponson, IPK, Hughes, Pavano. Rasner also had a FIP of 4.72 (not bad for someone claimed off waivers.)
Jeff Karstens was DRAFTED by the Yankees in the 19th round and pitched 57 innings in the big leagues. He was then part of a trade for Nady and Marte.
I’m not saying either player is good, but to put those 2 guys in a list of “busts” is a bit excessive considering one was drafted (late) and the other was claimed off waiver. We likely didn’t pay either anything above minimum salary, and combined they pitched 240 innings. No one expected either to be good and they weren’t. Luckily we didn’t pay them like they were.

Why not call Roy Oswalt? His price has to be going down as each day goes by and he’s just a loaner if needed. He doesn’t cost a draft pick and to be pitching with the Yanks, a team he could actually get a ring with, maybe it would pan out.

ESPN (surprisingly) sums it up well:
Yankees GM Brian Cashman also has taken Zduriencik off the hook by saying he believes the Yankees received a healthy player. After being an All-Star in the first half of last season, Pineda’s velocity and success tailed off toward the end of last year. Still, Cashman said there were no pre-trade signs of injury.
Pineda was 8-6 with a 3.03 ERA at the All-Star break. In the second half, he was 1-4 with a 5.12 ERA. In his final start of the season, he only threw 90 mph compared to 98 mph at his peak during the season.
Pineda reported to training camp about 20 pounds overweight this spring and never could find his velocity in any of his starts. The Yankees eventually put him on the disabled list. Zduriencik said Pineda will fight back.
