A lot of teams try to manufacture history and manufacture greatness. They retire numbers for players who don’t deserve the honor. They build statues for players who aren’t worth remembering. They create hype for players that turn out to be flashes in the pan. But Mariano truly is great and honestly deserves the accolades and remembrance. Not only was the performance other worldly but in context to the position where other guys constantly blow up in big spots and most don’t last more than three years – Mariano has set a standard on the same level as Ruth. & to top is off he is out for the season and feels he let the team down. If there was ever a player worthy of 100% unanimous vote in Cooperstown it should be him. What a blessing I was able to see this guy play my favorite sport for my favorite team.
Only thank him for the rings?!?! How about keeping the Yanks ultra competitive for 18 years straight!?!?! Boy you didn’t watch the Yanks from 1966-1994. We had about 6 teams that were competitive that entire stretch.
Can someone in this sackless, brainless organization please explain to me WHY THE FUCK WAS THIS MAN SHAGGING FLY BALLS? What the fuck is wrong with this organization? What happened to this team. I only wish that Mr. Steinbrenner were alive, someone would be fired for this, hell someone should be fired for this teams shitty plan so far this season. Yes Cahsman you Milf hunting loser I am looking at you.
Mariano Rivera does this every time, Obviously moron fans only find it a concern after they get hurt like joba in the trampoline, who the fuck thinks a trampoline is dangerous? You are also a moron for not knowing this. you should start going earlier to games and watch batting practice to see the dynamics of the players as humans and not as baseball players. now go fuck yourself asshole
Also, Mariano said that if he had to go out again, he would like to go out shagging fly balls. I don’t think he would have wanted to play baseball if he couldn’t have shagged fly balls pre-game.
My question for you, “Truth” is how an idiot like yourself learned how to use a keyboard. Is someone typing for you? Sometimes things just happen, and instead of wasting your time looking for some explanation, why not just reflect on how great Mo’s been for so many years? But you sound like the kind of dope who thinks everything should have a reason. Here’s a tough one for ya: When it’s raining does that mean God is urinating on you?
Whoever this asshat is pretending to use my handle, cut iy out. As for Mo. I am sick to my stomach, but this day was bound to come be it by injury or retirement. I can taks solace in the fact that was never due to ineffectiveness. Honestly we have seen all closers become mortal, from Eck, to Lee Smith and yes even Trevor Hoffman, who to be honest should never be mentioned in the same sentence as Mo.
He should receive 100% of the vote when he is elected to Cooperstown and the person who doesn’t vote for him should be removed from the BBWA. Hopefully the team will get over the shock of this and start playing better baseball.
hes a failed starter, pitches one inning, most of the time with noone on base, sure he should be a hall of famer but there are guys who deserve 100% before him
Are you a Red Sox fan? Honestly get the fuck off this site. Failed starer? He’d have been great at that too. Did you see his humbers the one time he started against the White Sox in 95? Drop dead and go back to mom’s basement.
Fuckface, so no hitter a aign of a pitchers greatness. You and all the rest of the stat whores who think you know every god damn thing need a reality check. Failed starter? Have we become so fucking jaded as sportsfans that we cannot appreciate a man’s greatness? God you need some help or some pussy. Knowing you I think the help will come first.
you seem mad, you brought it up first and then get on my case, you said hey! check out his stats vs the whitesox as if that has some valid point.
Noones putting in doubt that MO is the greatest closer in the history of baseball but you are just pissed out of a reality. Mo is a failed starter otherwise he would be a starter.
Also most of the time the closer is brought in a clean inning to pitch one inning. Yeah hes had great pressure success compared to the rest of most pitchers but there are other players more deserving of 100% votes before a closer.
Not for nothing, why should it matter, if you get the bare min. or unanimous, the fact is, he’s a lock in 5 years. Some dick in the bbwaa will use the one inning argument. Big deal, he’s a lock.
The saddest thing is, to me, we seldom get to see someone, that is almost unanimously considered the best at what he does, and know it. Knowing that, when we’re watching them, they can and will, just dominate, always.
All that was said in present tense.
Not no more.
Definitely sucks to be us.
I never had that lock down feeling with any other athlete, not baseball or any other sport. Not Jordan, Montana, Jerry West. Not like Mo.
Fuck, just say it; game over, here comes Mo with a lead.
Not no more.
This is no way for Mo to go out. His last act should have been getting his final save. I hope MO is back at least for one more inning to end his career on the mound, the way it should be. Speedy recovery , Mo! I wish you the best, thanks for all the amazing years you have given Yankee and baseball fans everywhere.
Remember when King hit his 14th inning HR in ’95? 3 IP by Mo got the team to that point.
9th inning white-knuckle saves by Wetteland? Smooth-sailing 7th and 8th thanks to God.
There were rough patches here and there; the occasional April with a blown save to the Sox that meant surely he was done, but Mo has always risen and gotten even better.
A 1.40 ERA at age 38? Still receiving MVP votes at age 39? Lifetime ERA+ of 206??? How is this kind of shit even possible?
Save number 500 and RBI number 1 on the same night? Check. Lifetime post-season ERA of 0.70? Yup. Most saves of all time? Who even gives a shit about that, but yeah, he’s got that covered too.
I don’t know if Mo will ever pitch again, but folks, we are lucky as hell to have been a part of this ride.
Say whatever you want about the importance of the position itself, this man was simply the best to ever do it. There is no contest, there is no second place. He IS the standard and the bar will never be surpassed. This is a sad day, and we can only hope that he comes back so that he can go out on his own terms. This is a crappy way for anyone’s career to end, let alone the best to ever play his position.
And for those who downplay his significance since he only pitches “one inning with nobody on base”, the fact of the matter is that the man has had more direct impact on more games than any position player ever could. So please keep the negative comments to yourselves. If you are a fan, you recognize greatness. Period, end of story.
My point is to compare individual position players, not position players as a group. Just look at post season games and name me ONE position player in the history of the sport who has had more direct impact on more games than Mariano Rivera. There is no such thing as an unimportant post-season game. He has appeared in 96 post-season games, has had a direct impact on 96 post-season games. He has saved 42 of them and has an ERA of .070. Now go find me a position player who has had a significant impact, positive or negative, on 96 post season games. Jeter, for one, has played 152 post season games … do you think he’s had a direct impact on 96 of those? Sorry, but no.
Please. I am a fully-biased Yankee fan, but Trevor Hoffman isn’t even in the same ballpark. Not close. If you want to just look at the career saves stat, go for it. If you want to lament that Hoffman didn’t get much of a chance in the post-season, go right ahead. You would be a complete idiot to make such an argument, but feel free. This isn’t bias, it’s fact. I say that there is no second place, because it is simply insignificant. It’s like the 2nd guy to walk on the moon. Who really cares?
This is the shittiest news I have ever woken up to. I don’t even know what the fuck to say. If we have to look at something positive, at least we have a guy who can step for now, who has almost two strikeouts per inning.
“Black Gallagher ain’t going out like no punk bitch”
That being said, retirement plans are on hold. He is going out on HIS terms, then he will ascend into the clouds. The best that ever was and ever will be! He WILL be back!
Does anyone else think it’s ridiculous that they’re looking to give the temporary closer role to Soriano, instead of Robertson? Just ’cause “he has experience?” Do they really think that him entering the game in a different inning is going to magically make him know how to pitch again?
how is he a moron? compare both players numbers and it’s pretty damn clear who has been more consistent. compare thier numbers from last year and it’s even more obvious. i’d personally MUCH rather see d-rob closing than soriano.

3) Replacing MO is going to be a lot of pressure, no matter who its going to do it, all the media attention is gonna be on that guy so you are better off throwing Soriano there to take the hit cause its easier to replace the guy who replaces the legend.
4) David Robertson is such an asset to have to come in and get the mess cleaned up rather than starting a fresh inning so in this case its pretty much mix and match depending the situation.

4) David Robertson is such an asset to have to come in and get the mess cleaned up rather than starting a fresh inning so in this case its pretty much mix and match depending the situation.

actually, i like point #3 a lot.
we all like Robertson better than Soriano, so we’ll throw Soriano under the bus.
