This is an honest question, not a usual dig at the club’s tendencies towards veterans. Do you sign him to serious guaranteed money if he wants to come back but can’t even start pitching again until December? How do you offer a 43 year old pitcher recovering from a blown out knee a guaranteed multi-million contract? But how can you offer God a minor league deal?
I don’t think he’s going to be demanding a huge deal. he will have made $18M this season to only pitch one month. something in the range of $10M probably won’t make him cry.
Honestly? Since we have a situation at RF (bring back Swisher?), C (please no more Russ), and of course SP (CC, Nova, Pineda?, Hughes?, Phelps? Who?) I am hoping that we can either offer him a low salary around 5 mil or so or if he wants over 10 mil maybe find a way to move Raffy Soriano because next year in the pen we will have D-Rob, Aardsma, Joba to go along with Mo, Soriano, and maybe even Hughes. Way too many late inning arms.
Honestly, if they can give a 2 year, 9 million contract to a LOOGY who a.) they knew that there was a good chance that he’d be injured for the whole season or even the length of his contract and b.) did nothing over his career nearly as remarkable as what Mo has achieved, then I’m sure they can find a guaranteed roster spot for Rivera.
1. Yes, it would be worth it just to avoid the backlash from refusing to sign one of the best and most loved Yankees ever.
2. Assuming he is healthy enough to pitch at all, he would not be making ARod money at 43. He would be making $2-3 million, similar to what Pettitte is making this year. The Yankees have thrown away far more on mediocrities no one cares about.
3. Like Pettitte, Rivera seems like the type of player who will take a deal that makes sense. I don’t think anyone will begrudge the Yankees for making sure Rivera can pitch up to his standards if he comes back.
Bottom line, I’m sure the Yankees would be happy to spend a few million to see if Rivera can end his career on a better note.
If Robertson (or, somehow, Soriano) thrives in the closer role this season, the toughest question will be whether to reinstate Rivera as closer if he is able to pitch again.
No way is Mo ready to pitch this year – but maybe, if the division is securely wrapped up this September, they’ll let Mo play a game in center field like he’s always wanted. By then he should be able to run, just won’t be in pitching condition. Not much to lose at that point….
I have tix to the final homestand – that’d be a fun thing to see live.
Excellent post. I was checking constantly this blog and I am impressed! Very useful information specially the remaining section :) I handle such information much. I used to be looking for this certain information for a very lengthy time. Thanks and best of luck.

Meanwhile versus Kansas City last night David Robertson issued his own statement: “Don’t fuck with me.”
He then proceeded to K the side for the second time in two appearances.
