Covering July 9th – July 16th games, All-Star Break-shortened week at Triple-A & Double-A
Pitcher:
Brett Marshall, 22, RHP, AA
5.2 IP, 6 K, 0 BB, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 HR
Notable: 3rd MLPW of the season
After throwing 5+ innings of scoreless ball, Brett takes home his 3rd MLPW of the season. His ERA now stands at a cool 3.00 over 105 innings at Double-A Trenton. As we’ve stated before, his strikeouts have dipped in AA from A+ (5.74 K/9 from 7.31 K/9), and that’s reflected in his FIP (4.39 entering his latest start). Still, the sinkerballer is keeping the ball on the ground with a 1.21 Groundout/Airout ratio.
There’s not much more to be said about Marshall until he’s tested at the next level, and we’ll see if those decreased strikeouts will impact his success moving forward.
It’s cool to note that Brett was the first interviewee of our Stealth Bomber Series.
Hitter:
David Adams, 25, RHB 2B/DH, AA
.500/.546/.550 in 22 PAs
Notable: 2nd MLPW of the season
Just when we finished writing about Triple-A second baseman Corban Joseph being blocked by Robinson Cano, David Adams reminds us that there is another ‘victim’ of #24.
The Double-A second baseman went 10-for-20 in a shortened week, including a 5-for-5 performance on July 12th. As we noted earlier in the month, this is the first full season for Adams (knock on wood) since 2009, and he’s delivering with a .323/.387/.435 line (128 wRC+).
No one has ever questioned Adams’ bat (he was reportedly one of the players Seattle asked for when they were shopping Cliff Lee). It’s always been a matter of staying healthy, and when he’s on the field, he produces.
Like Corban Joseph, you have to assume Adams will be trade bait since the Yankees haven’t tried him at other positions either.
Honorable Mentions:
Nik Turley, 22, LHP, A+
4 IP, 6 K, 1 BB, 5 H, 1 ER
73 K in 67.1 IP, 1.66 Groundout/Airout ratio
Pedro Guerra, 22, RHP, A
5 IP, 5 K, 1 BB, 2 H, 0 ER
Venezuelan reliever has 49 K / 14 BB in 45 IP
Ben Gamel, 20, LHB OF, A
.360/.384/.600/ in 26 PAs
NoMaas interviewee in March
Kevin Mahoney, 25, LHB Utility, AA
.353/.389/.705/ in 18 PAs
Hitting .293/.380.476, has seen time at 3B/2B/1B/RF
Jose Pirela, 22, RHB Utility, AA
.353/.353/.705 in 17 PAs
Best season of his minor league career continues, .316/.384/.490
