– Covering June 25th – July 1st games –

Pitcher:
Vidal Nuno, 24, LHP, AA
12.1 IP, 12 K, 1 BB, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 HR
Notable: 1.18 ERA at AA

It’s not often a pitcher allows 2 runs over 12+ innings and sees his ERA go up. That’s what happens you’ve only given up 6 runs in 45.2 innings (1.18 ERA).

Southpaw Vidal Nuno has started 8 games since being promoted from Tampa earlier in the season, after striking out 26 in 24.1 innings at the High-A affiliate. Interestingly, he made 11 appearances at Tampa, with 10 of them coming out of the bullpen. He’s started full-time since making the trek to New Jersey.

The 24-year old is no stranger to MLPW. We highlighted him a couple times towards the end of last season, as he quickly moved through Staten Island and Charleston.

Nuno is a reclamation project of sorts. He was originally drafted by Cleveland in the 48th round of the 2009 draft. After the 2010 season, he was cut loose by the Indians, after posting a 4.96 ERA in A ball. Looking beneath the ERA, it certainly seems like Cleveland made a very weird decision. With a FIP that year of 3.67, a K/9 of 9.0, and a BB/9 of 1.3, why did they just give up on the then-22-year old lefty? Really, really, odd.

In 2011, Nuno joined the independent Frontier League, and pitched 41 innings before the Yankees signed him. With an added changeup, he’s flown through the Yankees system. Cleveland’s loss is looking like the Yankees’ gain.

Hitter:
David Adams, 25, RHB 2B/DH, AA
.381/.458/.904 in 24 PAs
Notable: 3 HRs on the week

It’s been a long time people have thought about David Adams, and that’s because the NoMaas interviewee hasn’t seen much baseball since he broke his ankle in 2010 sliding into second base.

This year marks the first of any real semblance of a full season for Adams since 2009, although he hit the DL very early on with a stiff neck. Before his ankle injury, Adams was a highly-regarded prospect. He was the Yankees 3rd-round draft pick in 2008, and his name was even mentioned in reports when the Yankees were reportedly pursuing then-Mariner CLiff Lee.

For the season, he’s hitting .281/.353/.404 in 168 PAs at Trenton. Hopefully, this week is the beginning of Adams putting himself back on the prospect map.
