With the trade deadline approaching, we take a look at two of Brian Cashman’s most recent trades, and how they predictably turned out to be complete duds.
Paying AJ Burnett to play in Pittsburgh
When the Yankees traded AJ Burnett to the Pirates in February, they agreed to pay nearly $20 million of the remaining $33 million due on Electric Stuff’s contract. Here’s what we wrote about 10 days before the trade actually happened:
There is no question that the AJ Burnett signing was a mistake. However, if the Yankees have to eat the bulk of his remaining $33 million, trading him would also be a mistake. It would be a classic case of cutting off your nose to spite your face.
While Electric Stuff is not the top-tier pitcher Cashman and Co. stupidly thought he was, he’d actually make a great 5th starter. His peripherals last year were actually pretty good (3.86 xFIP). His strikeout rate vastly improved in 2011 over 2010 (8.18 K/9 v 6.99). He suffered from an abnormally high HR/FB of 17%. He’s only 2 years removed from a 3.5 WAR season. If the home runs normalize a bit and he keeps all the other rates around the same level, you’re looking at a fantastic 5th starter.
Everyone knows Burnett’s been a huge disappointment. We’ve made fun of him at every opportunity. But if the Yankees trade him while eating a ton of salary, it would be an overreaction to the original mistake they made. Burnett could really tear it up compared to other 5th starters around baseball.
And like we thought, Pittsburgh made a steal of a deal. Over 100 innings, Electric Stuff has a 3.78 ERA/3.43 FIP/3.43 xFIP — all while the Yankees subsidize the Pirates.
The comforts of the National League cannot be ignored, but all signs in 2011 pointed to Burnett being a quality starter in 2012. Granted, the Yankees mistakenly signed him to be a top-of-the-rotation guy and that didn’t happen, but THEY WERE PAYING HIM ANYWAY. Heck, they could have made him a reliever or spot starter if they wanted.
Instead, they’re wiring money to Pittsburgh and watching Electric Stuff pitch the Pirates to one of their best seasons in years.
It was just bad business.
George Kontos to San Fran for Chris Stewart
In what’s showing inklings of being Tyler Clippard-esque, George Kontos has dazzled since being traded to the People’s Republic of San Francisco.
He started the year off in the minors, but got called up after pitching to a 1.71 ERA/2.73 FIP in 32 AAA innings. In 14 major league innings, he’s struck out 16, walked only 2, and generated a 60.5% groundball rate. He has a 2.57 ERA/2.13 FIP/2.35 xFIP. The sample size here is still very small, but considering Chris Stewart (.572 OPS, 49 wRC+) is the type of player you find hanging around minor league clubhouses playing hot seat pranks, this looks like an absolutely terrible deal.

I’m still waiting to get traded to get my game on track hardcore style!
Sorry July 17, 2012 23:46
But there is no fucking way Burnett would be doing as well as he is on our team. YS3 is too small for Burnett to be effective.

Who gives a warm pile about those?
Curved Slightly July 18, 2012 00:02
We all knew Kontos for Stewart was bad. We didn’t have a dime a dozen reliever or outfielder we could’ve traded??
Ben Ka bak's Dad July 18, 2012 15:33
Can we sue the GM?
Kontos July 18, 2012 00:09
Is just in the role of San Francisco’s Chad Qualls…without dumping gasoline all over himself and lighting a match on the mound.
Chad Qualls July 18, 2012 05:47
I’ll be DFA’d as soon Joba the Hutt is ready.
Any random AAA RP July 23, 2012 01:38
or really any of us can do at least what your doing
Brandon July 18, 2012 00:12
First place, 10 game lead in the loss column, best record in baseball, and all you guys can do is bitch that AJ fucking Burnett, the worst pitcher in Yankees history, is not on the team anymore
ERA+ July 18, 2012 00:35
This is the truth. xFIP is a feel good stat that assumes league average home run rates but AJ couldn’t do that in the AL East.
Carl Pavano July 18, 2012 09:27
Hey, a little respect over here?
Brandon July 18, 2012 15:26
You never pitched enough to suck as much as Burnett did
Urban Shocker July 18, 2012 12:15
As long as I get some love as one of the best pitchers in Yankee history, we’re all good.
Wallace Matthews July 18, 2012 13:06
I was going to write a piece about this. But nomaas stole my idea. Fuck you, nomaas. Dibs on an article about the Yankees failure to acquire Cliff Lee.
Nick Social July 21, 2012 14:29
Both trades were dumb.
Nomaas is spot-on here.
Mr. Overslot July 18, 2012 00:13
Pitchers excel after being traded away from the Yankees… news at 11.
TheGhostofAJ July 18, 2012 00:36
Sure, i’m doing well in Pittsburgh but i’ve already said I was too much of a mental midget to pitch well in NY. For any of you fuckwads that is sorry to see me go, think back to all the leads I gave up and how I crumbled whenever the boo birds would come out to roost.
I couldn’t hold Kuroda’s jock and if I were still schleping around the Yankee clubhouse Pettitte may never have returned. Hughes has come around and even the combo of Sweaty Freddy and new guy Phelps is better than I could have given the Bombers.
I’m much happier in PA where my tiny fucking brain won’t get in the way. Thanks and much love, the chickenshit asswipe that couldn’t handle NY.

Better Call Saul July 18, 2012 03:39
As has already been said, there is no fucking way Burnett would be putting up those types of numbers as a Yankee. We already went down that road and it was mostly disastrous, so stop longing for a return to those days. This is the third straight season Burnett’s ERA has been easily worse than his peripherals. It’s a trend. Even though I like the advanced stats, they don’t always paint the picture clearly. Matt Cain, whose xFIP has consistently been far worse than his ERA throughout his stellar career, can attest to that. Bottom line: Teams would still be wrecking Burnett had the Yankees kept him.
You’re right about the Kontos deal. That was a clown trade, bro.
Big Bam July 18, 2012 05:22
Are you guy’s fucking kidding?
April 1st has come and gone boys.
Vizzini could probably hold down the fifth spot in Pittsburgh.
Brian S. July 18, 2012 09:18
Cashman is stinky
Brian S. July 18, 2012 15:34
Yea!
Call me Crazy July 18, 2012 09:22
…but I’m actually OK with paying Burnett to be good in Pittsburgh. Girardi didn’t know how to manage Burnett. He’s the type of pitcher that needs to focus on the batter, and Girardi likes to control the running game. You have to play your starters to their strengths. Burnett would have had a mediocre season at best in New York and he would be a distraction. It’s just money, right?
Besides, maybe the Yankees get lucky and get to face Pittsburgh in the Series.
Jim Leyritz's Cellmate July 19, 2012 10:38
Yes, it’s Girardi’s fault that AJ, a starting pitcher, would implode on the mound in the second inning if a runner got on base.
Brian S. July 18, 2012 09:24
Cashman is stinky. A stinky face
Jesus Montero July 18, 2012 09:53
Couldn’t it really be three?
Fitzy July 18, 2012 12:44
As they commonly say up in Boston, wait till next year.
Ricky Redundant July 18, 2012 19:33
We get it!
Greg July 18, 2012 10:14
Bad trades??! Seriously. Losing AJ was the best thing that happened to our starting rotation. He could not handle NYC and Yankee Stadium. What makes you think he would not have been 9-16 with a 5.00 ERA in the Bronx? Playing in the NL and Pittsburgh is a whole other ballgame. Losing AJ allowed us to go after Hiroki and give Andy and Hughes a shot. We are better for it.
Kontos and Stewart is such a minor deal it’s not even worth talking about, not to mention our bullpen is doing fine in case you haven’t noticed. He likely would still be in Scranton if we didn’t make the trade. And now CC has his caddy ;)
Advanced Stats July 18, 2012 11:58
AJ is still an asshole.
Sabermatrician July 18, 2012 12:46
Did you come to that conclusion with bWAR or fWAR?
Raul Ibanez July 18, 2012 12:57
You losers must have nothing much to complain about if you’re bitching about AJ Burnett, of all people, and his prowess in the grueling NL Central. This feels like a Wally Matthews article.
Kuroda July 18, 2012 13:00
私は良いです。AJは吸う。
Another Factor July 18, 2012 13:02
Something that needs to be considered is likelihood of making the big league team better. In my view, Stewart is better than Cervelli, and has therefore made the team better- albeit very slightly. Kontos was, in all likelihood, never going to pitch for the Yankees. I get it, that there’s still a case to be made that an improvement over Cervelli could have been made without trading a minor leaguer, or that a guy like Kontos could have brought you more, but the fact that one is making the team better and one never would have means something.
Joe G July 18, 2012 13:03
But I LOVE STEWARTIE!!!!
CONCLUSION July 18, 2012 15:17
Cashman must go. He is a clown who was more interested in having affairs & aborting kids.
Joe Páwlikowski July 18, 2012 15:35
I just want Nunez back.

You people do realize that pitching in the NL is MUCH easier, right? I mean, there’s a freaking pitcher batting in the line up. Plus, the Padres & the Astros. C’mon…

(Breaking character)
You’re right – The Burnett deal was a huge mistake. I remember commenting on that after the (pre-trade) original post.
The fact that the Yanks chose to pay $20 to get rid of him and, from there, be one injury away (remember – they didn’t know about Pettitte yet) from Fast Freddy Garcia taking the ball (which, of course, happened and continues to happen) is just mind-boggling. Very stupid.
(Returns to character)
Its biz-ah. It’s just awd.
Steve Taft September 18, 2012 23:56
I love this comment. I am chuckling as I read it. I think you should be breaking your character once in awhile.
