Jeter is having a great offensive season. We praised him for it here. Let us repeat. Jeter is having a great offensive season. We praised him for it here.
So don’t get your panties in a bunch that we’re simply relaying what the metrics show for his defense this year. Both UZR and TotalZone agree that he’s wearing cement blocks on his feet again.
Derek’s saving grace has always been that when he gets to a ball, he rarely makes errors. His 8 errors is 4th-best among MLB Shortstops. UZR always credits him for his steady hand, and that includes this season (+1.4 Error Runs).
However, his range this year has been horrific, and that’s why these two defensive metrics rate him so poorly. UZR ranks him as the worst-defensive SS in the bigs this season, and it all stems from his range (-14.1 range runs).
While Derek is having a superb and unexpected season at the plate, he’s doing the opposite in the field.
Cue irate responses.

bartonbickle August 28, 2012 23:57
yea h but jteer made a jumpthrow as good as nayone in the game
Haha August 29, 2012 11:09
Yeah, but there’s no sabermetric for jump throws that NoMaas can pull out of their ass, so as much as I agree with ya, be prepared for people to argue that with nothing.
Ohreally August 29, 2012 00:00
Jeter having a poor defensive year is nothing new or noteworthy.
Yesreally August 29, 2012 00:38
It is when many are saying he should be MVP.
Prophet Muhammad September 2, 2012 10:23
Whoever thinks Jeter is the MVP lives in a bubble and faces beheading by my sword! Alah Ahkbar!
Brandon August 29, 2012 00:16
Any ground ball or line drive to the left side of the infield is a base hit and any line drive to the gaps near CF are 2Bs
Dang Malzone August 29, 2012 00:33
That’s ok, because most baseball announcers think Mark Teixeira saves at least 100 runs at season over at first base.
A-Bomb August 29, 2012 01:54
Make A-Rod the perma DH next year who only fills in at 3rd/1st in a pinch. He hits better as the DH and he might stay healthy a full year this way too. CoJo can play third and Adams/Pirela will be knocking on the door as well.
BC August 29, 2012 09:50
CoJo can’t play third. The Yankees haven’t tried him there. Adams is probably a more realistic option because the Yankees moved him to third a couple months ago.
Hank Steinbrenner August 29, 2012 01:58
What about Josh Hamilton’s defense in 6 years?
Cashman August 30, 2012 12:09
Looks great. 9 yrs, $522M.
Matzo August 31, 2012 14:19
I wish he’d sign Hamilton. He’d hit 75 homers in YS. But yeah, all the revenues are better off in the owners hands than the players.
Jim Leyritz's Cellmate August 29, 2012 06:12
The Cap’n doesn’t have range anymore, bud I’d still rather bitch about Granderson’s shitty jumps in CF.
And by the way, if Ibanez is showing a +5.4 UZR, I’m ready to throw the stat out of the fucking window. The guy couldn’t bend over far enough to get a bloop foul-fair double. This one is not passing the eye-test.
BC August 29, 2012 09:11
TotalZone says that Ibanez hasn’t been too bad either. I don’t think Ibanez has been a disaster
Haha August 29, 2012 11:04
That was too straight-faced. We’re going to need some confirmation of sarcasm on that one.
Ritardi August 29, 2012 06:38
This is why I play andruw Jones all the time. The numbers don’t lie.

Huh huh. Rubber game
Derek "cee lo" Green August 29, 2012 09:51

Here It Comes... August 29, 2012 11:00
You lose some range with age; you have to remember that almost everyone shortstop in the game now is so young that they remember being a little boy, watching him make incredible plays in the field. A couple days ago, he made an AWESOME running/leaping/throwing classic Jeter play.
What’s next, NoMaas? You’re going to want Ramiro Pena or Eduardo Nunez called up to take over at short? You’re going to support Cashman’s idea of putting Jeter in the outfield? You’re going to demand Jayson Nix or Casey McGeHee take his regular SS spot, and DH Jeter?
Good fucking grief. Whatever, he’s still MY captain. It is understandable if he has lost some range at 38, but he is still an outstanding hitter. None of those clowns I mentioned can hold a candle to what Jeter does at SS. You guys should audition for jobs as judges on some reality TV show or something; you would be so much more fucking critical of something great than all of the other stuck-up pricks on the show, that they would have no choice but to fire everyone else.
I hope you are a little kid August 29, 2012 11:26
with a comment like : he’s still MY captain
Sheesh
I hope YOU'RE a little kid August 29, 2012 12:18
…with grammar like that. That would be the only excusable explanation. And nope, I’m just a huge Yankees fan, plain and simple.
Ritardi August 29, 2012 19:28
What the fuck is wrong with that sentence?
Faz August 29, 2012 12:15
You do realize that YOUR captain couldn’t give two shits about you, right?
Negrodamus August 29, 2012 12:20
Jeter loves the fans an always has. He will give great thanks to Yankee fans when he eventually retires.
DormantUlcer August 29, 2012 23:28
Seems to me they just pointed out his defense has been poor this year. They haven’t attacked him, they haven’t demanded anything, in fact they made it a point to remind us how they have praised his offense, which is justifiable. But way to completely lose your mind over something that ultimately doesn’t matter.
