Jeter is having a great offensive season. We praised him for it here. Let us repeat. Jeter is having a great offensive season. We praised him for it here.

So don’t get your panties in a bunch that we’re simply relaying what the metrics show for his defense this year. Both UZR and TotalZone agree that he’s wearing cement blocks on his feet again.

Derek’s saving grace has always been that when he gets to a ball, he rarely makes errors. His 8 errors is 4th-best among MLB Shortstops. UZR always credits him for his steady hand, and that includes this season (+1.4 Error Runs).

However, his range this year has been horrific, and that’s why these two defensive metrics rate him so poorly. UZR ranks him as the worst-defensive SS in the bigs this season, and it all stems from his range (-14.1 range runs).

While Derek is having a superb and unexpected season at the plate, he’s doing the opposite in the field.

Cue irate responses.
