With the regular season winding down, how would you grade Brian Cashman for the 2012 season? This isn’t about his entire body of work, but rather just for this season. We’ll open up voting for his entire body of work in a future poll.

clearly cashman is running this poll. My F turned into a B, lol
Seriously he sucks. He got lucky last year with some aging vets panning out, so then that becomes his plan for this year? The whole organization appeared shocked when david phelps was good, its like they seriously dont believe our rookies have any value beyond trades.
Time to get some new eyes to look at the team.
The Seriously Actually For Realz Truth September 24, 2012 23:52
You are wrong.

I concur.

Is there a more marginalized GM in the game than Cashman? I don’t like him for his constant failure to build a pitching staff but I got to be fair.
There are too many cooks in the FO to get a true gauge on his talent.
That being said the guy lacks any foresight. The ideology that we need to win at all costs has blown up in our faces. (& now that they priced out the real fans who were they placating with the nonsensical thinking of signing veterans to seemingly endless deals anyhow?)
I gave him a D for this year. If the idea is to win a championship how did he once again leave glaring holes in the starting staff?!?!?!?
Failure to What? September 25, 2012 09:22
Fifth in AL ERA despite continual injuries.
Should have at least three home grown starters next year in Hughes, Nova and Phelps.
What are you talking about?
Monkeyjaw September 24, 2012 12:41
The guy is a train wreck when it comes to understanding and assessing pitching talent. Of course it isn’t only on him. I’m sure he relies heavily on his lieutenants and talent evaluators when it comes to acquiring pitching. However, in the words of Hopper from A Bug’s Life, ‘When you’re in charge, EVERYTHING is your fault.’ I’m paraphrasing of course. He just seems like an arrogant little man who thinks he knows more than he actually does. I knew-knew-KNEW the Montero trade was gonna blow up in his face! The jury is still out, obviously, but the trade is so typical of a Brian Cashman shoot yourself in the foot move.
Also, on the Cespedes thing…really??? At 4/$36 mil, this guy wasn’t worth a shot? Looks like the outfield will be a patchwork job for the next few years as well.
I know I sound like a spoiled Yankee fan but yer GOTDAMNED right I am!!!
Smart Guy September 24, 2012 12:53
while I have been critical to some of the cashman moves specially the montero trade I have to also acknowledge that while we can agrre or not on moves we really dont know whats going on in negotiations.
As far as Cespedes, he wanted to play in a small market team initially cause he was overwhelmed by the attention. I wanted Cespedes but if those reports are true whos to say he would have performed the same way in NYC? then if we invested on him and he fluked we would be killing cashman for signing him and not because he didnt sign him.
Whatever September 24, 2012 17:46
You would have been the first guy complaining if they gave $9M/yr to a guy that had never sniffed ML pitching.
Smart Guy September 24, 2012 13:00
to me it depends on 2014, I cant judge on cashmans moves this year without looking at the big picture. if the small veteran 1 year moves was part of a plan that leads to finally getting this team more athletic and younger cause they have some good plan going forward then i have to agree it as a positive but if these moves lead to making us believe they are saving money for 2014 only to not do it then i have to think the moves are just dumb
vinny-b September 24, 2012 13:30
Grade C. It would’ve been Grade B. However, he gets downgraded for not dumping Texeria to the Dodgers when given the opportunity. Actually, based on this he should be given a grade F
Smart Guy September 24, 2012 13:36
how was he going to do that? the thought that someone could think that was possible is just laughable
vinny-b September 24, 2012 14:01
try keeping up. It was reported in Daily News and NY Post. Dodgers confronted Cashman BEFORE they made the big deal with Boston. And Cashman wasn’t interested in moving him
Whatever September 24, 2012 17:43
“Confronted”? I don’t think that word means what you think it means.
Smart Guy September 24, 2012 17:46
I know the Dodgers asked about Teix, but how were you going to trade him without the approval of Teix who was not going to waive his NTC to move to the west coast? Stating the only reason he signed with the yankees was because of that no trade clause
Second, the Deal would have included Teix and CC, how in the world can you justify trading those 2 in the middle of a pennant race?
I think you are a Moron just like most yankee fans who think baseball is like their video games
Ki m Last September 25, 2012 14:32
Lumps
Yankees September 24, 2012 14:35
The Dodgers asked about CC and Teixeira before making the trade with Boston. Cash said he wasn’t interested but they both have full no-trade clauses anyways.
Smart Guy September 24, 2012 17:48
exactly! Lets just go back to the offseason when there were fallacious rumors of yankee fans dreaming about trading Teix to the cardinals and signing Pujols, in an interview Teix said Thats never going to happen, i have a NTC.
Teix isnt going anywhere
Scott Boras September 25, 2012 00:21
Give it a rest. a NTC is just an assurance that the player need to be asked first.
Plenty of players have been traded with full NTCs
Smart Guy September 25, 2012 09:20
well duh! but we are talking about a particular case that involves mark teixeira who never wanted to play in the west coast and that has said he wanted the ntc so he wouldn’t have to be uprooting his family from place to place
“One of the reasons that I didn’t sign with Boston was they don’t offer full no-trade clauses,” Teixeira said. “I would hate, personally as a father and a husband, I would hate to uproot my family here in New York and get traded somewhere else. That’d be devastating. I could play baseball anywhere, really, but to have to uproot your family, that would be really tough. And Boston doesn’t give full no-trade clauses. This is what could happen.”

Gammons is reporting that Robinson Cano punches puppies. He’s also been suspended 5 years by MLB for cocaine possession and is an active suspect in a quadruple homicide. #GammonsFacts

Don’t cheat on the Pawl.
Yankees September 24, 2012 14:34
There isn’t a better large market GM in the game. Large market teams are expected to win so they have to splurge in FA and don’t get as much time to develop prospects due to expectations. Look at the messes they have in Chicago and Boston for example. The closest thing to an albatross that Cashman himself signed is Teixeira but he’s till top 10 at his position. A-Rod and Soriano were not his doing. That being said, the Pineda injury makes me give him a C, for this year only. But I want him to be the GM for the foreseeable future.
Fart September 24, 2012 16:48
AJ Burnett doesn’t count? Igawa? How about Marte and Feliciano on a smaller scale? Those were both awful signings without the benefit of hindsight.
Yankees September 25, 2012 01:31
I said currently on the team, but you are right the Burnett signing ended up being awful. Feliciano is only making 4 mil…terrible contract but manageable. Marte and Igawa are off the team only reason I didn’t mention them,

2004! Chokahs! Jetah sucks! A-Roid!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
saucY September 24, 2012 15:06
Kuroda was the best thing. Montero for Pinata is still the worst, IMO… Bonus points for keeping CC, bringing Andy back, and the Suzuki trade.
C
Fart September 24, 2012 16:49
Negative bonus points for offering CC the stupid opt out in the first place.
Smart Guy September 24, 2012 17:52
that opt out was just part of the plan to get CC to NY, NY feared he wouldnt like it in NYC reason Cashman sweeten the Deal by giving CC the option of opting out. I dont see a problem with it, I di see a problem with giving any player a long expensive contract , but more if it were a Pitcher and hes done it twice CC and cliff lee, thank god Cliff lee didnt take that money otherwise right now we would be talking about letting cano, granderson and swisher go by 2014 because of the contracts we have already on other players
Once again youre on Cash dick a B? September 24, 2012 16:28
LMFAO a B for this joke of a fuccckin season he had no plan for injuries whatsoever?? He deserves an F but at the least a C
saucY September 25, 2012 14:06
i would only give an F if we missed the playoffs… a little harsh.

Brian would’ve pulled out if I asked for Nunez.
The Truth September 24, 2012 19:14
How about at Inc. I a not going to pile on about the Montero trade, water under the bridge. However keeping Andurw Jones & letting a younger better player in Dwayne Wise go? That’s the shit that confuses me. Please spare me the lefty bat bullshit, Andruw Jones has been god awful save for one series in Boston.
Jim Leyritz's Cellmate September 25, 2012 14:37
Letting Wise go is probably the only decision made during the year that really irks me. That guy had the greatest regular season defensive play of all time in the Buehrle perfect game – not to mention the ‘catch’ in the game against Cleveland.
You don’t throw shit like that at the scrap heap.
Otherwise, I think Cash has been aces this year. The players not pulling their weight are mostly the big names; the replacement guys have exceeded their worth this year.
