The fallout from Girardi’s continuous benching of Alex Rodriguez makes us wonder how in the world the third baseman can continue as a member of the Yankees. If fans didn’t like him before the playoffs, this latest controversy has only made Arod’s relationship with New York exponentially worse. We don’t see how the relationship can be repaired for next season, nevermind over the remainder of Arod’s contract.

The problem is that Arod has 5 years left on his deal, which takes him through age 42 — not exactly the type of contract that makes him appealing to other teams.

If the Yankees pick up the bulk of Arod’s contract, just to get him out of town, how productive would that be? Hal Steinbrenner does not want to be a luxury tax payer, and the Yankees would still be on the hook if they paid Alex to play elsewhere. Also, keep in mind that Arod was still an above-average hitter in 2012, and the Yankees would need to find and pay a third baseman to replace him. How will that math work under the Steinbrenner Cap?

The Yankees have backed themselves into a corner.
