Buster Posey, Justin Verlander, King Felix, David Wright, Matt Cain, Cole Hamels, Ryan Zimmerman, Troy Tulowitzki, Ryan Braun, Matt Kemp, Adam Wainwright, Evan Longoria — these are all examples of players who’ve been locked up by their current clubs in long contract extensions, which will take them through their prime years.

Why do we care as Yankee fans? The answer is that many of the game’s marquee players will not be hitting free agency until their best years are well behind them. Translation: The Yankees will find it exponentially more difficult to acquire elite players by going Ben Bernanke on them.

Therefore, the club needs to improve at developing its own homegrown talent. If it doesn’t, expect more re-treads.

We’ll be tracking the farm with our usual Minor League Players of the Week Award, and we hope they’ll be plenty of good stuff to highlight.
