With the Yankees and Mets both struggling to sell tickets this season at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, respectively, the Subway Series could not come at a better time for these two teams that share the Big Apple.

While the Yankees jockey with the Red Sox for the AL East lead, it is the fourth-place Mets that host the two most expensive games of the series. Monday’s series opener at Citi Field was one of the most expensive games of the season for the Mets, checking in at an average price of $146 dollars and a get-in price of $40. While prices for Monday’s contest declined slightly to an average of $118 dollars with a get-in of $29, the Citi Field average for the series of $137 represents a 67% premium to the average price for Mets tickets this season. However, prices are down across the board for Mets tickets this season, and these Mets Subway Series tickets were priced 20% below last year’s.

Yankees fans do not share the same excitement to see the struggling Mets. The two games at Yankee Stadium carry an average price of $109 dollars, with Wednesday pricing at $114 and Thursday at $107. While this still represents a 3% premium over the average price for Yankees tickets at the Stadium this season, similarly to the games at Citi Field, this year’s Subway Series tickets check in at an 11% discount to those of last year.

With a combined average ticket price of $136 dollars, this is actually the least expensive Subway Series of the last four years. According to TiqIQ, the cheapest secondary market ticket with fees included available for this series is for Wednesday’s game, at a price of $28 dollars. Interestingly enough, there are even cheaper tickets available from the Yankees directly, with some for as little as $22 dollars.

Although this year’s prices for Subway Series tickets are a far cry from those of 7/2/11 at Citi Field, the most expensive ticket for a matchup between these two teams at an average of $255 dollars, none of the games for this series are priced as low as the 5/22/11 game at Yankee Stadium which carried an average of $99. However, as both these teams continue to struggle selling tickets and the novelty of the Subway Series wears down with increased season-long interleague play, it’s not unreasonable to expect a new Subway Series-low average ticket price in the near future
