And what a great point that is. While other teams around baseball are increasingly locking up their young and/or marquee players to extensions which take them through their prime years, the Yankees still predominately cling to an archaic ‘no-extension’ policy.

Knowing they had a superstar on their hands, you can’t help but wonder if Friday would have been avoided if the Yankees had offered Cano an extension a few years back.

Young players will often take the certainty of guaranteed money and teams get contracts that are much more manageable.
